At least 10 die of electrocution after heavy rains flood Kolkata, India - nearly 10 inches of rain in less than 24 hours

MMMMM
At least 10 people died, mostly due to electrocution in rain-hit Kolkata, officials said, as heavy overnight rainfall caused widespread waterlogging, halting traffic, public transport and daily life across the city on Tuesday.

Heavy rain since past midnight flooded roads and residential complexes across the city, leaving vehicles stranded for hours in knee-to-waist-deep water at major intersections, including Park Circus, Gariahat, Behala, and College Street.

The deluge - 251.4 mm in less than 24 hours - was the highest since 1986 and the sixth-highest single-day rainfall in the last 137 years, only behind the record 369.6 mm in 1978, 253 mm in 1888, and 259.5 in 1986.

Kolkata Mayor and state Urban Development Minister Firhad Hakim told PTI that most parts of the city were waterlogged and teams of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) were working around the clock to drain out the water.

Snowflake Cold

Unusually heavy snow blankets western Mongolia's Zavkhan province, depth almost 2 feet

mmmmmmm
An unusually heavy snowfall has struck Zavkhan province in western Mongolia, the National Agency for Meteorology and Environmental Monitoring reported Monday.

The snow hit several soums (administrative subdivisions), including Uliastai, Yaruu, Ider, Aldarkhaan, Tsagaankhairkhan, Shiluustei, and Otgon, on Sunday and Monday.

Precipitation in the affected areas averaged 25-30 centimeters, with snow depths reaching up to 60 centimeters in mountainous regions.

Temperatures in these areas are expected to plunge to minus 2 degrees Celsius following the snowfall, the agency said. Authorities have warned the public, particularly nomadic herders and drivers, to take extra precautions against potential hazards.

Mongolia is known for its harsh continental climate, marked by long, frigid winters and short summers. Zavkhan province, located in the country's west, is among the regions that regularly experience some of the nation's coldest winter temperatures.

India's only active volcano stirs again; 'Barren Island' saw mild eruptions twice last week

mmmmm
Minor volcanic activity has been reported twice this month at Barren Island, India's only active volcano, officials said on Monday.

The eruptions occurred on September 13 and September 20 but were described as mild in nature, with no immediate threat to nearby areas, PTI reported.

Located in the Andaman Sea, about 138 km northeast of Port Blair, Barren Island is South Asia's only active volcano.

The remote island, spans roughly 3 sq km, is largely covered by volcanic cones and ash, with sparse vegetation visible from a distance. Rising 354 metres above sea level, it remains a striking geological feature of the Andaman and Nicobar archipelago.

Barren Island has a recorded history of eruptions dating back to 1787. Since then, it has witnessed several episodes of activity, including significant eruptions in 2017 and 2022, the latest being in July this year.

Officials continue to monitor the island closely, though the recent events have been classified as minor and pose no immediate risk to human settlements.

"It clamped onto my leg. The tail was flying up here. I was like, 'Get it off me, get off me!' I didn't want to touch it," Heblack said. The attack left wounds severe enough to require emergency medical treatment, ABC 7 News reported.

Isabel Campoy suffered a similar fate while walking with her niece Carmen near Mount Lassen Drive. The aggressive rodent launched itself at her face.

A single spinning storm cell dropped a picturesque tornado in Antrim County in northern Michigan on Monday evening.

The tornado then traveled over Torch Lake, sucking up water and becoming a tornadic waterspout. The tornado crossed Torch Lake before continuing east and eventually dissipating.

The National Weather Service in Gaylord, Michigan, issued a tornado warning at 5:57 p.m. for central Antrim County shortly after rotation was spotted on radar.

The storm was fairly isolated, with the tornado dropping from a relatively high cloud base. These conditions made the twister very easy to spot across the northern Michigan landscape.
