Spectacular waterspout swirls near Dubrovnik, Croatia

Adriatic Waterspout

The weather took a dramatic turn on Sunday as thunder rolled and lightning cracked across southern Croatia — and nature put on a powerful show with a huge waterspout forming over the Adriatic Sea.

The towering funnel cloud, clearly visible from the coast, swirled for several minutes before dissipating, leaving onlookers stunned by its size. Waterspouts — essentially tornadoes that form over water — are relatively common in the south of Croatia during stormy conditions, but this morning's spectacle was especially large and long-lasting.

Formed when unstable, humid air meets cooler temperatures above the sea, waterspouts can appear suddenly, creating dramatic scenes as columns of rotating air whip up the water below. Though usually short-lived and less destructive than land tornadoes, they remain a powerful reminder of nature's force.

Video of the phenomenon quickly spread online, with many commenting on the rare scale of today's Adriatic waterspout.

Several dead in Arizona flooding as rescues continue

Several deaths reported after flooding in Globe
Several deaths reported after flooding in Globe
Flooding in Globe, Arizona, has killed several people and caused hazardous materials to spread across the roads, leading the mayor to write in a Saturday social media post that the city council "will be declaring a State of Emergency this morning."

Newsweek has reached out to the Gila County's Emergency Management Specialist for comment via email on Saturday.

Why It Matters

Flooding is the second deadliest weather hazard nationwide, with most fatalities occurring when vehicles are swept away by rising waters.

Globe, which is located about 90 miles east of Phoenix, has been hit with excessive rain all week, with more expected today. On Friday, the National Weather Service (NWS) issued a flash flood warning for Globe and the nearby town Miami.

Mayor Al Gameros described it as "an unthinkable, devastating flood event," in a post Friday night.

Lightning strike kills 2 men and 2 dogs in rural Florida

mmmmm
Two men and two dogs were killed by an apparent lightning strike in southeast Highlands County.

The Highlands County Sheriff's Office reported that the bodies of the two men, aged 38 and 31, both from the Miami area, were found on a levee next to Canal C-41A near Rucks Dairy Road.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission discovered their vehicle parked in the area during a search.

Sheriff Paul Blackman emphasized the dangers of lightning in the region, stating, "Our area gets more lightning than just about anywhere else in the country, especially in the summer."

The initial investigation suggests that the lightning strike occurred sometime on Monday evening.

This tragic incident underscores the importance of taking precautions during thunderstorms, particularly in areas prone to frequent lightning strikes.

Stranded Marine Animal Rescue Team (Smart) are again urging people to avoid seals and remain vigilant, after a seal attacked a local yacht near Seal Island this morning, 25 September.

Kiyana Sailing's skipper, Antonio van der Westhuizen had alerted Smart to an aggressive male seal between Dias Beach and Seal Island, that attacked their boat not once, or twice, but three times.

Van Der Westhuizen told Mossel Bay Advertiser that it was around 11:00 today when he was making his way out to Seal Island, a place he has been many times before.

"I suddenly felt a bump from below the boat, around the propeller area and when I looked around, I saw a seal trying to get onto the boat. His head was mostly on the boat already," he said.

"I accelerated, and then it bit the back of the boat and then kept charging it."

It was just after this when Kiyana Sailing's deckhand, Dillan Roode took a video of it.

The discovery of three dead Cuvier's beaked whales (Ziphius cavirostris) along the southern coast of the island of Crete within 24 hours has raised concerns among scientists and local authorities.

The first whale, measuring approximately 2.5 to 3 meters long, was found in the Monobouka area. Shortly after, a second whale washed ashore at Kalikovrechtis. A third whale was later discovered nearby.

Officials said the Ierapetra Port Authority is handling the case. A team of veterinarians was also mobilized after one whale was found alive.

The Hellenic Center for Marine Research (ELKETHE) said the situation does not fall under the jurisdiction of the local Aquarium. Scientists have contacted ARION, an organization specializing in marine mammal response. A representative from ARION confirmed four whales were involved - three dead and one alive.
