Death toll rises to 69 after strong magnitude 6.9 earthquake strikes central Philippines

mmmmm
At least 69 people have been confirmed killed and almost 150 injured after a powerful magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck off the coast of the central Philippine island province of Cebu, according to officials.

The United States Geological Survey said the earthquake struck at 9:59pm local time on Tuesday (13:59 GMT) off Cebu Island's northern tip near Bogo, a city of some 90,000 residents, and was followed by four earthquakes of magnitude 5 or higher in the area after the first tremor.

The new death toll confirmed on Wednesday is a sharp increase on the 26 people reported killed earlier by the country's National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council and is expected to rise further.

Rescuers scrambled to find survivors. Army troops, police and civilian volunteers backed by backhoes and sniffer dogs were deployed to carry out house-to-house searches for survivors.

"We're still in the golden hour of our search and rescue," Office of Civil Defense deputy administrator Bernardo Rafaelito Alejandro IV said in a news briefing. "There are still many reports of people who were pinned or hit by debris."

Locals in Bahraich said wolves have been roaming the area for weeks.
An elderly couple was killed in a wolf attack in Uttar Pradesh's Bahraich, sparking panic and violent clashes between villagers and forest officials.

Authorities said the couple was guarding their field when a wolf pounced on them, killing both on the spot. The animal mauled the upper part of their bodies. Three others, Meena Devi, Dhanpatiya and Sebri, were injured in the attack and are receiving treatment at a local hospital.

As news of the deaths spread, angry villagers brought the bodies home and blocked forest officials from entering the area. When Sub-Divisional Officer of the Forest Department, Rashid Jameel, reached the spot with his team, villagers attacked them with sticks. The officer's vehicle was vandalised during the clash, leaving the team unable to enter the village.

Two of the three large sperm whales stranded off P.E.I.'s North Shore have been confirmed dead, according to the Marine Animal Response Society.

The third animal is still alive, the group said, but it's in a tough spot and is not in good condition.

The whales were first spotted Saturday night on the ocean side of a small chain of islands close to Hardys Channel, near East Bideford in western P.E.I.

Tonya Wimmer, executive director of MARS, said the whale that is still alive is not in the best location. She said the whales are large, so rescue efforts could only further harm it.

"In the case of these animals, they were all fairly big. They're anywhere from 33 to about 38 feet long, which puts them anywhere between, you know, 15 to almost 20 tonnes," Wimmer said.

Romania sees season's first snow on mountain areas as temperatures drop

mmmmm
Romania recorded the season's first snowfall in several mountain areas on Monday morning, September 29, including the scenic Transfăgărășan highway, as colder weather settled across the country. The National Meteorological Administration (ANM) also issued a weather advisory valid for this week, warning of cold and rainy conditions.

The Regional Road and Bridge Directorate (DRPD) in Brașov reported snow in the Bâlea Lake area of the Transfăgărășan, where crews prepared plows and spread anti-skid materials to prevent ice formation.

"Although the snow that fell this morning is not causing problems yet, our colleagues will intervene throughout the day with plows and anti-skid material, especially since conditions are expected to worsen in the coming days," the agency said on social media, urging drivers to adapt their driving to road conditions.

The first snow falls in Kazakhstan, turning cities white

mmmmm
On the morning of September 29, the first snow of the year fell in the Kostanay district of the country. In a short time, the city streets and houses were covered with white snow, while the roads became icy and inconvenient. This was reported by local publications.

In some areas, power outages were observed, and several traffic lights stopped working. This led to delays in traffic and congestion on the roads. The police urged drivers to be cautious in adverse weather conditions and to strictly follow traffic rules.

Meteorologists had earlier warned about a sharp drop in temperature across the republic starting from September 28. According to them, thunderstorms and strong winds may occur in the southeast of the country. In the northern regions, heavy rains and a significant decrease in temperature are expected.

Typhoon Bualoi made landfall in Vietnam before midnight on Sunday, triggering floods, airport closures and evacuations of thousands of residents.

The storm hit Vietnam just north of its largest province, sooner than predicted, with a speed of over 130 kilometers (80 miles) per hour.

It caused extensive damage, ripping roofs from buildings and uprooting electrical poles along the country's coast.

Comment: Update September 30

Sky News reports:
Torrential rain following Typhoon Bualoi has triggered more flooding and landslides in Vietnam, where at least 26 people have been killed and more are missing.

More than 30cm of rain hit parts of the country within 24 hours, with forecasters on Tuesday warning heavy downpours would continue.

As the number of fatalities rose, state media reported that 22 people were missing.

The prolonged rain caused flash floods and landslides that cut off roads and isolated communities from the northern mountains of Son La and Lao Cai provinces to central Nghe An province.

Another tropical storm (Bualoi) hits the Philippines, causing at least 26 killed deaths and new evacuations (UPDATE)

MMMM
Another tropical storm barreled across Philippine islands Friday, causing at least four deaths and new evacuations of tens of thousands of people from landslide- and flood-prone villages long battered by typhoons.

Bualoi, which has weakened since making landfall overnight, was the latest of back-to-back storms from the Pacific to threaten Asia. Typhoon Ragasa, one of the strongest to hit in years, caused at least 25 deaths in the northern Philippines and Taiwan, mostly from flooding, before making landfall in China and dissipating over Vietnam.

Bualoi made landfall in the Philippine town of San Policarpo in Eastern Samar province late Thursday with sustained winds of 110 kph (68 mph), knocking out power in towns and villages and setting off flooding and two minor landslides, the country's disaster-mitigation agency said in a news conference.

Temperatures plummet & September snowfalls of up to 2 feet in European Alps

The first decent snowfall of the 2025-26 season was seen across the Swiss peaks.
The first decent snowfall of the 2025-26 season was seen across the Swiss peaks.
Temperatures plummeted across the European Alps this week, with snow falling in French, Swiss, and Italian ski areas above 2,000 meters (6,560 feet).

At Zermatt's Gornergrat station at 3,129 meters (10,266 feet), temperatures dropped from 13°C (55.4°F) to -2°C (28.4°F) in three days.

Areas in Italy's Piedmont region saw the strongest September snowfall in over 30 years, which closed many roads in the region.

Several pass roads had to close in the Swiss-Italian border regions, including the famous Gotthard Pass.

While the snowfall has not been quite as big as last year's September snow storm, when up to 1 meter (3 feet) fell, this year's September snow is still a welcome harbinger of things to come for the 2025-26 ski season in Europe.
