A 60-year-old man who was found dead at an Arkansas campground Thursday was likely killed by a black bear, according to officials in Newton County. In a statement issued Wednesday, the Newton County Sheriff's Office said it was still awaiting autopsy results to determine the man's cause of death, but that a preliminary investigation led them to believe a bear was responsible.

"Until the Arkansas Crime Lab completes the autopsy, we can't one hundred percent say it was a bear, but everything strongly indicates it," Sheriff Glen Wheeler said. "We know without a doubt that a bear was in camp with our victim and the injuries absolutely are consistent with a bear attack."

Wheeler added that it was a "highly unusual case," and that they will update the public on the full findings of their investigation when complete. Officials have not released the identity of the man, who was visiting the state from Missouri.

Wheeler explained in the statement that the sheriff's office had gotten a call from the man's son on Thursday. He said that his father was camping at Sam's Throne but hadn't checked in for a couple days. When officers arrived, the man was not in his camp. They found his body several yards outside the campsite.

Heavy rains flood streets in Tripoli and Misrata, Libya

mmmmm
The cities of Tripoli and Misrata witnessed heavy rainfall on Thursday morning, causing a number of main streets to flood and disrupting traffic in some areas.

The General Company for Water and Sanitation announced it had started pumping and draining the collected water since the morning. It published video clips showing its teams deployed to several locations in Tripoli and Misrata to deal with the flash floods.

Activists on social media shared video clips showing rising water levels in a number of streets, including Al-Hallaqin and Al-Matabbat streets in Misrata, as well as the Al-Bifi area east of the capital, Tripoli.

The National Center of Meteorology had predicted in its weather bulletin that there would be thunderstorms in the northwestern regions, especially the coastal ones. This led to water collecting in low-lying areas like the Hamada al-Hamra desert, while cities in the northeast, including Bayda and Tolmeita, experienced heavy rainfall in the past few hours.

Early heavy snowfall in Bulgaria shuts down Petrohan Pass - up to a foot of snow

mmmmm
The Petrohan Pass has once again been closed due to severe winter conditions. According to the regional governor of Montana, Kalin Haitov, the snow cover in the area has already reached around 25 to 30 centimeters, accompanied by numerous fallen branches scattered across the road. Although large trees have not yet collapsed, the fallen debris has created significant obstacles. Cleaning operations are underway, carried out jointly by the road maintenance company, firefighting teams, and forestry units that have been mobilized in the higher parts of the pass.

Snowfall has also affected other high-altitude areas in the Montana region since the previous night. Haitov confirmed that several municipalities, including Chiprovtsi and Georgi Damyanovo, are experiencing power outages. Entire villages in these areas remain without electricity due to fallen trees damaging the network. Crews are currently working to restore supply and clear the damage. Despite the challenges, the regional governor emphasized that there are no reports of stranded or endangered people in Montana district at this stage.

Sudan's capital confronts Nile's wrath in record flood

Sudan flooding: The Nile's rising water levels affecting towns
Sudan flooding: The Nile's rising water levels affecting towns
In the outskirts of Wad Ramli, north of Sudan's capital Khartoum, the familiar passageways have vanished. Surging Nile waters, having breached sections of earthen embankment, now invade homes, submerge courtyards, and turn dirt roads into turbulent muddy streams.

The dark brown water, heavy with silt from the Ethiopian Highlands, flows violently, carrying a silent threat. The air hangs thick with the smell of mud, while the river's roar echoes like a constant warning.

Residents awoke to the unfolding disaster three days ago. Farmland that stood green just weeks earlier is now submerged. Men cluster at the broken edges of the embankment, watching helplessly as the river pushes further inland.

Amid the chaos, families scramble to salvage belongings. Children cry, men call out warnings, and some point frantically at homes teetering on the brink of collapse.

Rare early October snow blankets Greece's mountains

Below-zero temperatures were recorded on Greece’s highest peaks, including Mount Olympus.
Below-zero temperatures were recorded on Greece’s highest peaks, including Mount Olympus.
The first snowfalls of the season have arrived in Greece, covering high-altitude areas of Mount Olympus, Kaimaktsalan, and Falakro on the night from Wednesday to Thursday. Snow cover was expected to expand further Thursday night into Friday as temperatures dropped sharply.

"Early October snow is extremely rare in Greece," Stavros Dafis, a researcher at the National Observatory of Athens' METEO group, told Kathimerini.

According to Dafis, only four previous years - 1983, 1989, 1995, and 2002 - recorded similarly low temperatures in early October, though it is unclear whether snow fell then. The last somewhat extensive October snowfall occurred in late October 2017.

It remains uncertain whether this unusual early-season snow is an anomaly or a sign of a wetter, snowier winter ahead.

Long-term trends show a clear decline in snowfall across Greece, with METEO researchers noting that between 1991 and 2020, the duration of snow cover decreased by about 1.5 days per year.

The volcano erupted with a deafening sound on October 2, the official said.
After lying dormant for over 20 years, India's only mud volcano at Baratang in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands has erupted again, officials confirmed on Friday.

The eruption was reported at Jarwa Creek, Baratang, on October 2.

A senior police officer said, "We received information at around 1.30 pm on Thursday (October 2) about a violent eruption of a mud volcano at Jarwa Creek, Baratang. Such a big eruption was last reported in 2005. The eruption was followed by a deafening sound like an explosion. On receiving the information, local police officers, along with forest officials, visited the spot."

Officials explained that the mud volcano is formed by gases deep underground, created by decaying organic matter. These gases push mud and gas upwards, forming bubbles and craters. "The mud volcano here is formed by gases deep inside the earth from decaying organic matter. It pushes the mud and gas to the surface, which creates bubbles and craters. It is one of the must-visit spots in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands," an official said.
