Lightning strike kills 3 farm workers in Assam, India - another bolt kills 2 boys in Odisha

mmmmm
Three people were killed and one critically injured after lightning struck a group of farm workers at Debera Doloni in Rangsali village of Lakhimpur district.

The deceased have been identified as Saul Horo, 60, Jackson Kerketta, 52, and Jayanti Toppo, 43. According to reports, Saul Horo and Jackson Kerketta were working in their paddy field when Jayanti arrived with lunch at around 1.30pm on Friday. The trio were struck by lightning suddenly, and they died on the spot.

Family members alleged that the victims could not be shifted for treatment in time due to the poor condition of the village road, which delayed the arrival of an ambulance. The injured was rushed to a nearby hospital, and his condition remains serious.

The incident marks the second fatal lightning strike in Lakhimpur district within a month. On June 7, Jatin Gogoi, 75, died after being struck by lightning while working in his paddy field in Bihpuria.

The deaths come amid a relentless spell of severe weather battering Assam and the northeast. The India Meteorological Department has issued fresh alerts for thunderstorms, lightning and heavy rainfall in several parts of Assam. Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious, avoid open fields during thunderstorms and follow official weather advisories.

Officials have urged farmers and field workers to seek shelter immediately upon signs of an approaching storm, warning that open agricultural land offers no protection from lightning strikes.

The Level 4 warning issued by the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) is the second-highest, which means that the risk of landslide is extremely high and people should evacuate from affected areas.

The Level 4 warnings were issued for the city of Miura, in Kanagawa Prefecture, and a broad swath of southern Chiba Prefecture. Parts of Kanagawa and Shizuoka prefectures were also under Level 3 warnings.

Tropical Storm Mekkhala was churning over waters some 140 kilometers south of Omaezaki, Shizuoka Prefecture. The storm is forecast to head northeastward along the Pacific coast, bringing rain to the southern Kanto area late Saturday.

Earlier Saturday, Tropical Storm Higos skirted southern Chiba Prefecture before moving northeast out over the Pacific Ocean.

The JMA has urged the public to remain on high alert for landslides, swollen rivers and flooding in low-lying areas due to heavy rain.

Heavy rains from a passing typhoon caused localised flooding in Taipei and parts of southern Taiwan on Thursday, while more than 200 people on the east coast will ‌be evacuated ahead of a possible breach of a barrier lake in the mountains.

Although Typhoon Mekkhala, which is heading towards Japan, will not make direct landfall in Taiwan, its outer bands are bringing torrential rain to parts of the island, especially in Kaohsiung and Pingtung in the south.

Pingtung's government ordered all offices and schools closed on Thursday afternoon, while neighbouring Kaohsiung did the same for two mountainous areas. In one area of the Neihu suburb of Taipei, flood waters nearly submerged cars.

While no casualties have been reported so far, in the eastern coastal county of Hualien the government is evacuating more than 200 people in two townships which are downstream from a rapidly ‌filling barrier lake above it in the mountains.
