Corporate elites dominate National Public Radio governing boards

NPR Board
Typical public radio board members: 66 percent of NPR affiliate board members have the same gender, 72 percent have the same ethnicity and 75 percent represent the same social class as these gentlemen.
For a public radio service, NPR is notoriously known for its lack of diversity within its staff, audience and guests invited onto their shows—problems that NPR has itself acknowledged (6/30/14).

A new FAIR study finds that NPR's diversity problem also extends into the board of trustees of its most popular member stations: Two out of three board members are male, and nearly three out of four are non-Latino whites. Fully three out of every four trustees of the top NPR affiliates belong to the corporate elite.

FAIR studied the governing boards of the eight most-listened-to NPR affiliate stations, based on Arbitron ratings (Cision, 2/13/13). The stations and their broadcast regions are KQED (San Francisco), WAMU (Washington, DC), WNYC (New York City), KPCC (Los Angeles), WHYY (Philadelphia), WBUR (Boston), WABE (Atlanta) and WBEZ (Chicago). (Two top-rated public stations, KUSC in Los Angeles and WETA in Arlington, Va., were not included in the study because they mainly play classical music rather than having a news/talk format.) Board members were coded by occupation, ethnicity and gender.

Comment: Many Americans still suffer from the misconception that NPR is a voice for the people, which is exactly in accordance with their marketing efforts. The elite control of this organization belies this, showing that in fact it is little more than "controlled opposition". As such, choices are made to air or slant opinions that either covertly support the control system or offer washed-down versions of dissent.

Walter Reed National Military Medical Center outside Washington, DC is on lockdown as police investigate a report of an active shooter. The hospital provides long-term care for wounded veterans, including those with post-traumatic stress disorder.

Shortly before 1 p.m. local time, federal law enforcement told the media they received an order to stand down, after finding "no indication of a shooter."

Comment: Are shootings at federal buildings becoming more frequent or just test runs?

Medical malfeasance: Dentists performing excessive, needless services on Medicaid patients

dental practices medicaid patients
They’re raking in hundreds of millions of dollars across multiple states.
Over the past couple of years, the Office of the Inspector General (OIG), which is part of the Department of Health and Human Services, has been looking into a colossal scandal across the country. Thousands of dentists have been implicated in a series of reports by the OIG. The charge? Highly questionable Medicaid reimbursement bills for excessive and even needless services given to low-income children, often to their great harm.

The latest report from OIG looks at California. It identified 335 providers with questionable billing practices who collected $117.5 million from Medicaid for pediatric dental services in 2012 alone. Half of these dentists worked for dental chains, suggesting an organized scam. They are, in fact, gaming Medicaid.

Comment: It seems many dentists are simply following their peers in other fields of medicine as the healthcare industry seems to have devolved into little more than a money-making scheme. Apparently the days of "first do no harm" are long past.

Greece votes No: The European Union is dying before our eyes

Image

It's not just disaffected pensioners: young Greeks have worked out that they don't need the bloated EU

Despite the scaremongering and bullying from those in Brussels, we are waking today with Greece having delivered a resounding No.

That comes despite EU bosses saying that it would mean a Greek exit from the Euro, not to mention the heavy economic pressure placed on the Greek people to go along with the wishes of Brussels. It is a crushing defeat for those Eurocrats who believe that you can simply bulldoze public opinion.

Chief bully-boy Martin Schulz, President of the European Parliament, and other supposed leaders of the European Union did their best to terrify the Greek people into submitting to the wishes of the European Union. But they utterly failed. The fear espoused by the Yes campaign was rejected. Opinion polls that put the Yes side ahead just days before were way out, as thousands upon thousands of Greek citizens lined the streets chanting "Oxi".

550,000 gallons of water dumped because of conservation efforts in San Diego Co., CA

Image
Hundreds of thousands of gallons of water went to waste in California at a time when water conservation efforts are more serious than ever for the drought-stricken state.

The mayor of Poway, a city in San Diego County, defended the decision to dump 550,000 gallons of drinking water into a nearby canyon, according to ABC affiliate KGTV.

"It was a perfect storm of conservation and heat," Poway Mayor Steve Vaus told KGTV.

Comment: There are so many other uses for the water that was dumped besides drinking water! What a waste of precious water. The city needs to be held accountable.

Are you easy prey for a psychopath?

Image
A sociopath is someone who lacks empathy and has no moral compunction in doing whatever is in their own interests. Estimates suggest one person in 25 exhibits sociopathic traits. Sociopaths feel no obligation to anyone else. Many sociopaths wreak havoc in a covert way. Their relationships are generally dysfunctional because they tend to protect and enhance their own self-esteem at the cost of cooperative relationships.

To see through the sociopath's ruses, you first need to open your eyes. In The Emperor's New Clothes by Hans Christian Anderson, two weavers promise the emperor a new suit of clothes that is invisible to those who are stupid and unfit for their positions. When the emperor parades before his subjects, all the adults, not wishing to be seen in a negative light, pretend they can see the clothes. The only truthful person is a child who cries "But he isn't wearing any clothes!"

Comment: The word sociopath is often used as a way of softening the more unpopular word psychopath. When dealing with this topic however, it's best if we just call a spade a spade.

A criminal complaint and arrest warrant were issued Thursday against a 55-year-old Tomah, Wisconsin man accused of threatening to kill President Barack Obama.

Brian D. Dutcher, 55, allegedly told a security guard at a La Crosse library, "the usurper is here and if I get a chance I'll take him out and I'll take the shot," referring to President Obama, who was in Wisconsin promoting his proposal for overtime pay reform. According to the warrant, Dutcher confirmed in an interview with the Secret Service that he made the remarks to the security guard.

Brian D. Dutcher, 55, allegedly told a security guard at a La Crosse library, "the usurper is here and if I get a chance I'll take him out and I'll take the shot," referring to Obama, who was in Wisconsin promoting his proposal for overtime pay reform.

According to the warrant, Dutcher confirmed in an interview with the Secret Service that he made the remarks to the security guard.

The warrant also says Dutcher posted on Facebook on June 30 "that's it! Thursday I will be in La Crosse. Hopefully I will get a clear shot at the pretend president. Killing him is our CONSTITUTIONAL DUTY!"

Dutcher also told a La Crosse detective that his threat was serious and that "he would not have said what he said if he didn't intend to carry it out."

A law enforcement official said Friday that Dutcher had been arrested and is currently being held pending initial appearance.

While threats against the White House and Obama are relatively common occurrences, Thursday's arrest warrant comes amid increased security measures leading into the July 4 holiday weekend and concerns of a terrorist threat.

Hysteria! Actor and practicing Buddhist detained, accused of terrorism for meditating on plane

Image
Heitor Lourenco
47-year-old Portuguese actor and practicing Buddhist, Heitor was detained by police this week, and held for 6 hours under suspicion of terrorism after he was meditating on a flight that was awaiting takeoff from Paris.

Lourenco had allegedly frightened flight attendants and other passengers when he meditated and read a sacred Tibetan text to himself just before the plane took off. The departure was delayed, and police boarded the plane and took Lourenco away for questioning.

"Police told me that I had been denounced as a terrorism suspect aboard the plane because I was reciting the Koran aloud, that I was reading a text involving words 'death' and 'bomb'," Lourenco told reporters on Thursday.

Lourenco said that he was using his tablet to read the sacred text, and the app that he was using included a timer to let him know how long he was meditating. The fact that his application had a timer was allegedly what made people think it was a bomb, but it a major stretch to assume such a thing, and an extreme overreaction.

When police arrived on the scene it should have only taken him a few seconds to explain the situation, but instead he was taken off of his flight, treated like a criminal, and detained for 6 hours. Eventually, police were able to Google his name to discover that he was a well-known actor and a practicing Buddhist, and they finally let him go.

Comment: The fear mongering is certainly working.

Phone love: People think about their phones when waking up rather than significant others

Image
© ShutterstockMost people check their phones in the morning; a habit they do before thinking about significant others, drinking coffee, or even brushing teeth.
Whether you're reaching for your phone in the morning to shut off the alarm or to check all those important Instagram or Facebook updates you missed over the past 8 hours, you're probably one of those millennials glued to your phone first thing in the morning. Heck, who am I to judge? We're all guilty of it.

We've become dependent on devices and social media, addicted even, and it has become second nature to constantly check our phones to see if we have a new e-mail or a notification that someone has liked a photo. And it turns out we're thinking about our phones more than we think about our significant others or even coffee first thing in the morning.

According to a new study out of the Braun Research Center and Bank of America, more people think about their phones than their significant others when they first wake up. The study "explores mobile behaviors and trends among adult consumers across the country," its website states. "This year's results demonstrate the notable impact that mobile devices increasingly have on our daily lives. For many, it's the first and last interaction of the day."

The study found that 35 percent of people thought about their smartphone first thing in the morning, followed by 17 percent who thought about coffee, and 13 percent who thought about their toothbrushes. Only 10 percent thought about their significant other (this is a tricky one, because what if your SO is lying there next to you? Or perhaps thinking about them is synonymous to thinking about your smartphone, because you reach over to text them "Good morning!" first thing).

Effects of Fukushima radiation are ongoing while media omits the news

Fukushima
© Desconocido
It has been over four years since the 9.0 magnitude Tōhoku earthquake and ensuing catastrophic tsunami leveled the Pacific coast of Japan, setting off a nuclear meltdown at the Fukushima Daiichi power plant. Radiation has been pouring into the ocean, into the earth below, and into the air for over 1500 days now and there is still zero sense of urgency on the part of the government and world leaders to seriously address this blooming catastrophe. All efforts to stop the meltdown and clean up the radiation have been left in the hands of TEPCO, Japan's energy company that has been proven time and again to be inept and unprepared to confront a disaster of this sort.

The mainstream media, for its part, appears to be complicit in a cover-up of the effects that Fukushima radiation is already having on our environment and on human and animal health, and instead insists on omitting most news on the matter, or seriously dumbing down reports of the fallout.

Comment: To those reading only the mainstream press, Fukushima is 'old news'. The unprecedented rates of cancer, and the ongoing devastating effects on insects, birds and marine life have been effectively hidden from view. It's obvious those in control of the nuclear industry have done their jobs, much to our detriment.
