A knife wielding man has been shot in the center of the Belgian capital of Brussels after attacking a group of soldiers, Belgian prosecutors said.

The incident took place about 20:15 local time (18:15 GMT). Belgian prosecutors said that the attacker is alive but in critical condition.

The soldiers were lightly wounded in the attack. One was cut in the face, while the other suffered an injury to the hand.

"With the identity that we currently have it is a 30-year-old man who is not known for terrorist activities," a spokeswoman for the prosecution service said.

Comment: Update: Belgium launches twin probes into Brussels stab attack
Belgian prosecutors said they launched twin investigation after a knife-wielding man shouting "Allahu Akbar" attacked soldiers in Brussels. The assault is being treated as an act of terrorist.

The assailant attacked Belgian soldiers with a knife in central Brussels on Friday night, according to the Belgian authorities. The man shouted "Allahu Akbar" ('God is great' in Arabic) twice while carrying out the attack, according to Esther Natus, spokeswoman for the federal prosecutor's office.

Soldiers fatally shot the attacker following a close encounter. "One of the soldiers opened fire and hit the man twice. The man later died in the hospital as a result of his injuries," Natus added.

Later on Saturday, prosecutors announced that the first investigation will look at the incident itself, and the second inquiry will see if the soldier who shot the attacker acted appropriately, Reuters reports.

An autopsy was planned for Saturday, the prosecution service said in a statement, adding that prosecutors would make the final decision based on the results and a report by a ballistics expert.

According to the authorities, the 30-year-old man, identified as a Somali citizen, came to Belgium in 2004. Belgian Migration Minister Theo Francken said the man had been granted asylum in 2009 and obtained citizenship in 2015.

The man was not known to have any links to Islamist militancy, but had committed an act of assault and battery in February this year, prosecutors say.

The attack in central Brussels came shortly before two British police officers were attacked outside Buckingham Palace in London.

Police later said the man, in his mid-twenties, was "arrested by police after they spotted a weapon inside his car. The quick and brave actions of both officers meant that the suspect was detained very quickly," Detective Superintendent Guy Collings said on Friday.

Confederate flag maker 'overwhelmed' by surge of orders as tensions flare

Amid tense debate on the future of Confederate statues around the US, business appears to be booming for a major Confederate flag manufacturer in Huntsville, Alabama.

Alabama Flag & Banner - described as one of the last remaining confederate flag makers - is benefiting from a surge in demand from US nationalists, according to CBS News.

Tensions around the public display of images associated with the US Confederacy, the 11 secessionist states that fought to maintain slave society, have increased recently.

Concern over the flying of the Confederate flag was initially raised in 2015, following the racially-motivated African Methodist church massacre carried out by Dylann Roof in South Carolina.

Outrage against the symbol resulted in the flag being removed from the South Carolina statehouse grounds.

Elite college Bryn Mawr downplays association with 'racist, anti-Semitic' co-founder

Bryn Mawr College

Liberal arts college Bryn Mawr is the latest university to purge its historic past by distancing itself from a former president and co-founder, because of her alleged "racist and anti-Semitic" views.

M. Carey Thomas, a suffragette known for advancing women's rights and championing female education, co-founded and presided over Bryn Mawr College from 1884 to 1892.

However, Thomas was also allegedly a "racist who actively discriminated against Jewish and African American applicants to Bryn Mawr."

On Thursday, current Bryn Mawr president Kim Cassidy said two buildings named for Thomas on college campus, Thomas Great Hall and Thomas Library, will receive new titles in an effort to disassociate the college from Carey.

Comment: Another example of liberal snowflake insanity trying to re-write reality. For better or worse M. Carey Thomas helped found Bryn Mawr, and no amount of sanitizing can change that historical fact.

A man has been arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm and assault on police on the Mall near Buckingham Palace, the Metropolitan Police reported.

The incident took place at 20:35 local time the police revealed in a statement. Officers stopped the man and attempted to arrest him when he was found with a knife outside the palace on Friday evening.

While the police were trying to place him under arrest the man attacked the officers. The officers suffered minor injuries and they were treated at the scene by the London ambulance.

No others persons have been reported injured following the attack.

Queen Elizabeth was not in residence in the palace when the attack outside the palace happened.

Comment: Update: Man with 4ft sword arrested in Buckingham Palace terrorist incident shouted 'Allahu Akbar' - police
London Police say the man who attempted a sword attack outside Buckingham Palace repeatedly shouted "Allahu Akbar" before he was taken down by officers with pepper spray.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed that Friday's events outside the palace of the British monarchy is being treated as a terrorist incident.

The altercation unfolded just after 8:30pm when a man driving a blue Toyota Prius was confronted by officers in a restricted area on Constitution Hill.

The driver of the vehicle is alleged to have reached for a four-foot sword before he managed to be immobilized by police using CS spray. Three Metropolitan police officers received minor injuries during the incident.

A 26-year-old man from the Luton area has been arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm, and is being held on terrorist charges, according to a Met Police statement.

"Officers from the Counter Terrorism Command are now investigating and searches are being carried out in the Luton area today [Saturday]," said Commander Dean Haydon, of the Met's Counter Terrorism Command.

"We believe the man was acting alone and we are not looking for other suspects at this stage. While we cannot speculate on what the man was intending to do - this will be determined during the course of the investigation - it is only right that we investigate this a terrorist incident at this time."

The terrorist threat in the UK remains high, following three major attacks in London and Manchester recently.

In June, eight people were killed and scores more injured when a van was deliberately driven into pedestrians on London Bridge. The three perpetrators fled into Borough Market, Southwark to carry out a stabbing spree where they were later shot dead by armed police.

Belgium opens 189 terrorism cases since start of 2017, focus on 'homegrown' extremists

Belgian prosecutors have opened more than 20 new probes against people suspected of terrorism-related offenses on average every month since the start of the year, with the total number reaching 189 to date, local media report.

The figure is already nearing the mark for similar cases opened throughout 2014, when the total number was 195. The average number of monthly cases opened also exceeds last year's figure, which amounted to 22, the Belgian newspapers De Tijd and L'Echo report.

The Belgian media also report that the focus of investigators' attention has now shifted from extremists who left Belgium to fight alongside terrorist groups in the Middle East, as it was in 2015, to "home-grown radicals" who have never left for Syria or Iraq, as well as towards increasingly younger suspects.

Investigations were also opened into cases in which Belgian citizens became victims of terrorist attacks in other countries, such as Spain, Turkey or Sweden. The Belgian authorities say that the risk of a terrorist attack in the country remains high.

Calgary cop yells out "YouTube Alert!" as his fellow officers deliver a brutal beating

police beating
A trial on the use of excessive force during a violent arrest in the city of Calgary has included a number of revelations as one officer admits he intentionally turned off his Dash Cam, and another officer admits he yelled "YouTube alert!" to encourage his fellow officers to stop recording a brutal beating that was sure to go viral.

Clayton Prince, 35, suffered multiple broken ribs and a collapsed lung on July 30, 2016, after a traffic stop led to a violent arrest. Prince testified that he was on his way home from a summer music festival when he was pulled over, and because he was paranoid that he still had marijuana and cocaine in his system from the event, he fled the scene.

When officers caught up to Prince, he was lying face-down on the grass, in the position to surrender for an arrest-the only thing the officers had to do was to put him in handcuffs. However, that is when the violence began.

Constable Chris Harris testified that the officers on the scene made "no meaningful attempts" to actually put Prince in handcuffs, and they resorted to mercilessly beating him with their fists and knees instead, as he lay helpless on the ground with no way to defend himself.

Nelson Mandela statue in Parliament Square, London should be removed, says far-right BNP

The statue of Nelson Mandela in London's Parliament Square should be removed because the anti-apartheid leader was not British, did nothing for the UK, and was a violent terrorist, the far-right British National Party (BNP) has said.

David Furness, a BNP spokesman, told RT the bronze statue of the late president of South Africa should be removed from Parliament Square and placed in the South African embassy.

His call comes amid a growing public debate about the removal of public symbols that could be considered racist.

Calls to remove a statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee from a park in Charlottesville, Virginia, led to violent clashes between far-right groups and anti-fascists earlier this month.

There are now similar calls in the UK for the removal of Lord Nelson's statue, which stands atop Nelson's Column in Trafalgar Square, because he has been deemed a white supremacist.

Elderly brothers charged with possession of child pornography now under investigation for signs of bodies in Seattle home

Emery home
A child's hat, found burned inside the Seattle home of three elderly brothers arrested Monday for alleged child pornography possession, has prompted at least one investigator to search for a possible connection between the men and local missing persons cases.

Investigators have begun searching the property for possible victims after the hat - along with writings from the oldest brother, regarded as a "manifesto" by authorities - was discovered, according to KIRO. The document reportedly contained writing about "Satanic rituals, kidnapping, raping and killing girls."

A Grays Harbor Sheriff told KIRO he's investigating a possible connection between the three brothers and the 2009 disappearance of 10-year-old Lindsey Baum, who was last seen walking home from a friend's house in McCleary.
