Ireland aims to deny passports to convicted pedophiles to combat child sex tourism

Cancelling passports of convicted pedophiles could help end child sex abuse abroad and sex tourism.
Ireland could soon be following Australia's lead by becoming the first country in Europe to cancel passports of convicted pedophiles in a bid to prevent them to traveling overseas. The campaign championing this idea for Ireland is being led by Irish priest Father Shay Cullen, a four-time Nobel Peace Prize nominee who runs People's Recovery, Empowerment and Development Assistance (PREDA), a child abuse charity in the Philippines.

Ireland is expected to introduce a draft of this new legislation later in October. It would mean that convicted pedophiles would be prohibited from traveling overseas.

Cullen, who was born in Dublin, said the introduction of legislation such as this would prevent registered sex offenders from traveling abroad. He also said this legislation would particularly benefit developing nations where sex tourism and child prostitution are major problems.

Speaking to the Irish Examiner Cullen said, "It is a grievous crime for anyone to travel abroad to commit child abuse. Legislation was passed in Australia, but we want other countries to follow, and Ireland to take the lead in the EU on this.

Comment: Australia has taken the same measure:
Yet people on social media were not entirely satisfied with the proposed measure, calling upon the authorities for even stricter rules.

"How about jailing all pedophiles?" one person asked.

Others wondered if the authorities can protect Australian children from those pedophiles which will now remain in the country.

Four people were arrested in Tampere, Finland when counter-protesters faced-off against members of the neo-Nazi Nordic Resistance Movement.

The Nordic Resistance Movement's manifesto details that the group wants ethnic non-northern-Europeans to be deported from Finland and to "regain the power from the global Zionist elite."

Members of the group gathered at Tampere Central Square on Saturday, before marching towards Pirkanmaa District Court. The group of 200 people were met by approximately 800 anti-fascist campaigners, reports YLE news.

Some 200 police officers were also deployed to area for the demonstration, during which some counter-protesters threw smoke bombs.

Americans are sicker, retiring later and dying earlier

The U.S. retirement age is rising, as the government pushes it higher and workers stay in careers longer.

But lifespans aren't necessarily extending to offer equal time on the beach. Data released last week suggest Americans' health is declining and millions of middle-age workers face the prospect of shorter, and less active, retirements than their parents enjoyed.

Here are the stats: The U.S. age-adjusted mortality rate-a measure of the number of deaths per year-rose 1.2 percent from 2014 to 2015, according to the Society of Actuaries. That's the first year-over-year increase since 2005, and only the second rise greater than 1 percent since 1980.

Parents awarded $500K after video shows cops stomp, taser, suffocate their son to death

deputy abuse
Surveillance footage, released to the Reno Gazette-Journal through a public records request, shows the terrifying final moments of 35-year-old Justin Thompson, a man in the midst of a mental breakdown. For 30 minutes, nearly a dozen Washoe County Sheriff's deputies took turns kicking, tasering, insulting, and crushing the wind from Thompson - who noted multiple times that he could not breathe through the spit mask over his head. After seeing the video, Thompson's parents sued the county for the wrongful death of their son.

The lawsuit was filed in federal court in June and asked the county to pay wrongful death damages, the cost of Thompson's funeral, and other damages.

It was announced this week that Thompson's parents have agreed to settle their wrongful death lawsuit for $500,000.

Peter Goldstein, the lawyer representing Thompson's parents, claimed in the lawsuit that Thompson was no danger because he had been medicated at the hospital, making him docile. Goldstein also said deputies ignored Thompson's repeated warnings that he could not breathe.

"As seen in the video, the staff and deputies of the jail kicked, kneeled upon, burked and applied torturous arm bar holds, and refused plaintiff's pleas for help," he wrote. "When decedent stated he could not breathe, they did not provide any help or even begin to appreciate the level of danger and harm decedent was experiencing."

A British man is facing up to three years in a Dubai prison after touching a man's hip while on a night out in the Emirati city.

Scottish electrician Jamie Harron, 27, was arrested for public indecency while on holiday in Dubai. While in the Rock Bottom bar, he put his hand out to stop himself spilling a drink and inadvertently touched a local man's hip, according to Harron's representatives.

Harron has reportedly lost his job and spent upwards of £30,000 ($39,000) in expenses and legal fees since he was first arrested in the country three months ago.

Comment: Update (Oct. 23): Harron had been working in Afghanistan, and had stopped over in Dubai for 2 days when the incident occurred. After charges were pressed, his accuser dropped the complaint, but local prosecutors proceeded with the case. Yesterday, it was announced that Harron had been sentenced to three months in prison. He plans to appeal. (He had already been sentenced in absentia to 30 days in prison for failing to appear at a court hearing and drinking alcohol during the incident, in addition to making "a rude gesture".)

Today, however, "the campaign group supporting Harron, detained in Dubai, said charges against him have now been dropped":
The Scot had his passport returned at the police station after having it confiscated, and is now free to leave the country.

Harron had been released on bail while his lawyers sought an appeal against the public indecency charge.

After 'Cheese Pizza' post, officer arrested for child porn

Authorities say a New Jersey corrections officer has been charged with receiving images of child sexual abuse.

Federal prosecutors said Thursday that 37-year-old Stephen Salamak was arrested at his home in Lodi.

Salamak has been suspended with pay from his job as a corrections officer at East Jersey State Prison in Rahway.

Prosecutors say an undercover officer first made contact with Salamak after he posted on Craigslist that he was looking for women and moms "that are into Cheese Pizza," a reference to child pornography.
