Republican Senate nominee Corey Stewart has argued that the American Civil War was not fought over slavery, but over states' rights.

Speaking to The Hill on Monday, Stewart said that while not all parts of his native state of Virginia's history are "pretty," the Civil War ultimately was not about slavery.

"If you look at the history, that's not what it meant at all, and I don't believe that the Civil War was ultimately fought over the issue of slavery," Stewart said. "We have to put ourselves in the shoes of the people who were fighting at that time and from their perspective, they saw it as a federal intrusion of the state," he said.

Stewart's softening of the Confederate brand drew some criticism on Twitter, with Democrats and critics calling his views "trash" and "out of touch with history and reality."

Leaked document in Podesta email cache reveals ClimateWorks Foundation's campaign to foist climate laws on local governments

climate change laws
This document, from 2016 is part of the cache of John Podesta emails (campaign manager for Hillary Clinton), is a meeting packet for an NGO called The ClimateWorks Foundation. They say this on their web page:
Climate change threatens ecosystems, societies, and economies. These challenges require innovative responses and insights. Using the power of collaboration, ClimateWorks Foundation mobilizes philanthropy to solve the climate crisis and ensure a prosperous future.
And on their BOD page, U.N. climate crusader Christiana Figueres, who was executive Secretary of the UNFCCC from 2010-2016 along with Hillary's campaign manager, John Podesta among others; an unholy alliance in my opinion.

'I thought she was white': Roseanne apologizes for racially-charged tweet that led to her show being canceled

Actress Roseanne Barr has a perfectly reasonable explanation for the recent racist comments she made on Twitter about Valerie Jarrett, an adviser to former President Barack Obama: she didn't know Jarrett was black.

Barr made an emotional apology on Rabbi Shmuley Boteach's podcast for a tweet in which she said Jarrett looked like what would happen if the "Muslim brotherhood & planet of the apes had a baby." The tweet resulted in the cancellation of her recently rebooted ABC sitcom. Barr said she was sorry about the tweet but said she believes it was misinterpreted because she didn't mean what people thought she meant.

"That's what's so painful," Barr said. "But I have to face that this hurt people-and when you hurt people, even unwittingly, there's no excuse, so I don't want to blabber off on excuses."

French counter-terrorism forces have detained a group of suspected far-right radicals who were plotting an attack on "people of Muslim faith." Firearms as well as homemade explosives were found during the raid.

Ten people suspected of having links to a far-right movement have been detained in a large-scale security operation late on Sunday, June 24, the French media reported on Monday. The arrests were made by the General Directorate for Internal Security (DGSI) as part of a counter-terrorism investigation into a planned attack on Muslims.

The raids were conducted in the Paris region, the western regions of Haute-Vienne and Charente-Maritime as well as on the island of Corsica. The suspects, aged between 32 and 69, had an "ill-defined plan to commit a violent act targeting people of the Muslim faith," a source close to the investigation told AFP.

A Florida man who fatally struck a father and injured his two sons in what police are calling a "random" but "purposely done" hit-and-run attack is in custody Monday as investigators are trying to piece together a motive for the disturbing incident.

Police announced that Mikese Morse, a 30-year-old from Tampa, is now facing first-degree and attempted murder charges after striking the family - who were riding bicycles along a trail in the northern part of the city - with his car Sunday afternoon.

"This is definitely random and it was purposely done," Tampa Police Chief Brian Dugan said Monday. "We don't know why. He had no contact with the family."

The 30-year-old is an American track and field athlete who repeatedly qualified for the United States Olympic Trials, according to the Associated Press.

Survivors from the Dawabsha family, who were burned to death in their bed by right-wing Israeli settlers in 2015, have vowed to take a case to the International Court, after an Israeli court decided to throw out the confessions of two of the perpetrators.

On July 31st, 2015, extremist Israeli settlers infiltrated the village of Douma, south of Nablus in the northern part of the West Bank, under cover of darkness, to firebomb the Dawabshas' home, where the family of four were asleep in their beds.

The father Saad, 32, mother Reham, 27, and 18-month-old Ali were burned to death, while 4-year old Ahmad suffered from 3rd degree burns over most of his body.

Open borders activists and celebrities initiate 24-day hunger strike to protest Trump's 'zero-tolerance' immigration policy

Child detention center Rio Grande Valley
Open borders activists and celebrities are going on a 24-day hunger strike to protest the Trump administration's "zero-tolerance" policy on illegal immigration at the southern border.

The hunger strike, organized in part by the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights organization, kicked off on Saturday blocks away from a federal courthouse in McAllen, Texas, where illegal immigrants detained for unlawfully crossing the U.S. border are sent to be prosecuted.

"Today, we have a president who has a different idea of what it means to be an American," Kerry Kennedy, who runs the RFK center and is one of the strike's organizers, told USA Today after visiting the courthouse Friday.

Comment: It's difficult not to suspect that Trump derangement syndrome is the primary motive for these protests. How many of these bleeding hearts were protesting against the inhumane conditions and untimely deaths bestowed on innocent children and their families throughout the Middle East by previous administrations? Where were they when 'deporter in chief' Obama was 'taking care of' the immigration problem and caging children?

Bin Laden's former bodyguard detained in Germany months after revelation he was living there on social benefits

German authorities are working to deport a man who allegedly worked as Al-Qaeda founder Osama Bin Laden's bodyguard and then lived in Germany on social benefits - almost two months after reports about the man hit the news.

Identified only as Sami A., the Tunisian man has been living in the western German town of Bochum. Police detained him on Monday, German media reported, citing local officials. The arrest took place after the German Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) lifted a ban on his deportation, a spokesman for the Bochum city authorities said.

The German authorities are now expected to deport the Tunisian man to his country of origin. The necessary documents are now being prepared by a local visa and registration department, according to the spokesman. The man has been placed under arrest.

The move has been backed by German Interior Minister Horst Seehofer, who has recently taken a particularly tough stance on migration and asylum. "The BAMF has now initiated the deportation procedure against the former Osama Bin Laden's bodyguard. I have instructed the BAMF to treat his case as a high priority matter," the minister told the German Bild daily, adding that he would be "closely following" this case.

The whole police force in a Mexican town of Ocampo where a mayoral candidate was slain this week has been detained for an internal investigation, authorities said Sunday.

"All of them are being interviewed to proceed as due under law in the event anyone has taken part in acts that violate the town's codes," said the security secretariat in Michoacan state, where the town of about 20,000 people is located.

It did not give the exact number of police detained.

Mayoral candidate Fernando Angeles was shot dead last Thursday when he was preparing for campaign events.

The police have been transferred to the internal affairs unit of the state security secretariat, which did not clarify in its statement if the arrest is related to Angeles' killing.

On Wednesday, Omar Gomez, an independent candidate for mayor of Aguililla, also in Michoacan, was shot to death.

On June 14, a candidate for mayor of Taretan, in the same state, was also killed.

Since the campaign season started in Mexico, which will conclude with elections on July 1, more than a hundred politicians and candidates, mostly local, have been murdered.
