Israel's Gaza blockade is illegal - and so is the use of force to maintain it

Gaza March of Return
Human Rights Watch (HRW) is among the leading guardians of human rights in the world. Sari Bashi is HRW's Israel/Palestine Advocacy Director. She can lay claim to an impressive academic pedigree (BA, Yale; JD, Yale), and she co-founded the important Israeli human rights group Gisha. It thus cannot but depress that Bashi is so wanting in elementary moral and legal judgment when it comes to the people of Gaza.

Shortly after the Israeli massacre in Gaza on 14 May 2018, Bashi posted a commentary under the title, "Don't Blame Hamas for the Gaza Bloodshed."

Its essence is captured in the opening sentence: "Israel has a right to defend its borders, but shooting unarmed protesters who haven't breached its frontier is disproportionate and illegal." Insofar as the demonstrators didn't pose an "imminent threat to life," Bashi concludes, Israel had no right to use lethal force against them and, in any event, did not "exhaust" nonlethal means "such as tear gas, skunk water, and rubber-coated steel pellets" to throw back the assembled crowd.

Due Process: Why the US cannot deport illegal immigrants without trial

Judge Andrew Napolitano
© Fox News screenshotJudge Andrew Napolitano
Last weekend, President Donald Trump argued that those foreigners who enter the United States unlawfully should simply be taken to the border, escorted across it and let go. According to the president, this would save precious government resources, avoid the business of separating children from their parents and free up the Border Patrol and other federal assets to do their jobs.

He is undoubtedly correct on the beneficial consequences to the government of forced deportation without due process. Yet deportation without a trial is profoundly unconstitutional.

Here is the back story.

The nation has been torn apart by the images of immigrant children -- some are babies -- being forcibly separated from their parents by U.S. immigration authorities, who were getting orders from the Trump administration, which was misreading federal law so as to require the separation.

The government has essentially taken the position that those physically present in the U.S. illegally have few constitutional rights and thus family members who arrive together can be separated, no matter the psychological or physical consequences. This forced separation is not novel to the Trump administration, but its massive scale in the present toxic national political environment has painfully brought it to our collective conscience.

A married City worker who dragged an intoxicated teenager into an alleyway to rape her was jailed for eight years today.

Sanjay Naker followed the 18-year-old after she was thrown out of Number 1 club in London Bridge for being too drunk.

The 28-year-old loitered outside the bar then slung the teenager over his shoulder and dragged her away from the busy street on 11 March last year.

Distressing CCTV footage released by the Met Police today shows the girl barely able to stand or walk in a straight line as Naker pulls her along down the secluded alleyway.

The teenager fell and banged her head and tried to 'claw her way along a wall' to run away from him.

But Naker, an employee at PricewaterhouseCooper in London, subjected her to a sickening 30-minute attack, forcing her to perform sex acts then repeatedly assaulting and raping her.

Naker was found by a security guard at 4.45am, standing over his victim and zipping up his trousers, as she lay unconscious and half naked in a puddle of her own urine.

He then took a minicab to the home he shared with his wife of two years and later searched the internet for the definition of 'rape'.

A Jewish-Syrian has been brutally beaten by a mob of 10 in a Berlin park, leaving the victim, 25, with a head wound. German police confirm that the alleged attackers have been arrested and released, pending inquiries.

Police spokesperson Martin Halweg confirmed the assault, telling the media that the man was attacked after asking a group of people for a lighter in a central Berlin park just after midnight on Saturday.

"The question [for the lighter] led to a verbal argument between him and members of this group," Halweg said. "One of his opponents then spotted that the 25-year-old was wearing a necklace with a Star of David on it; he ripped it off, made an anti-Semitic remark and punched the victim in the face multiple times."

Cairo court sentences Lebanese tourist to 8 yrs prison for Facebook post complaining of sexual harassment in Egypt

Mona El-Mazboh sexual harassment Egypt
Mona El-Mazboh complained of sexual harassment and poor conditions in the viral video, which was deemed illegal by Egyptian government officials.
A Lebanese tourist who was arrested last month for posting a video on Facebook complaining of sexual harassment and conditions in Egypt was sentenced to eight years in prison by a Cairo court on Saturday, her lawyer told Reuters.

Mona el-Mazboh was arrested at Cairo airport at the end of her stay in Egypt after a 10-minute video in which she called Egypt a "son of a bitch country" went viral on social media.

The 24-year-old Mazboh complains of being sexually harassed by taxi drivers and young men in the street, as well as poor restaurant service during the holy month of Ramadan and an incident in which money was stolen from her during a previous stay.

A Cairo court found her guilty of deliberately spreading false rumours that would harm society, attacking religion, and public indecency, judicial sources said.

Comment: El-Mazboh posted a second video apologizing to "respectable Egyptians" for her comments, after she learned of the potential punishment - apparently Egyptian authorities decided to make an example of her in spite of the apology.

Beijing has called on Chinese firms to substitute American imports with those from other countries in response to US trade tariffs.

According to the Ministry of Commerce, China considered the substitution of imports and the overall impact on trade and investment while making up a list of US goods hit by import duties.

"We encourage companies to optimize the structure of imports, increase imports of soybean, agricultural products, as well as seafood and cars from other countries and regions," said the ministry, explaining that the measures are aimed at mitigating the effects of the trade war with the United States.

Democrats: The party of hate

Democratic Party headquarters office
Many years ago, Democrats were known for their staunch support of peaceful protests and our First Amendment rights guaranteeing free speech. Today, party activists have become intolerant, hateful and, in too many cases, violent.

It seems that almost every week a Trump administration official or supporter is being badgered by leftist protesters. It happened to Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen at a restaurant and at her home. Both Senior White House Policy Advisor Stephen Miller and former EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt were recently harassed at restaurants. Of course, White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders and her family were not allowed to eat dinner at the Red Hen Restaurant in Lexington, Virginia because of her support for the President's policies.

Comment: Far from listening to reason Mad Maxine is ramping up the rhetoric. She is losing the very people she considers her base.

14 killed in pro-govt raid as protests against Ortega continue in Nicaragua

nicaragua protest
At least 14 people have been killed in Nicaragua during a reported raid by pro-government forces as protests against President Daniel Ortega continue unabated in the country.

Violence broke out on Friday after police used mechanical equipment to open roads barricaded by protesters in the Diriamba and Jinotepe areas, 20 kilometers from the opposition bastion of Masaya.

Videos filmed by residents and posted on social media showed unidentified armed men in black-hooded civilian clothes roaming in the area alongside police forces.

The assailants opened up access to over 350 cargo trucks stranded on the highway in Jinotepe for over a month amid the protests.

"This has been a horror. We have a minimum of 14 dead, but it could be more. That includes at least one anti-riot officer, one paramilitary member and two police officers," Vilma Nunez, president of the Nicaraguan Center for Human Rights (CENIDH), told AFP.

"This looked like an occupation army. They wiped out all the barricades. There are more dead whose identities we have not been able to confirm. There are a lot of arrests and injuries. A disaster," she added.

Police blamed "terrorists with firearms" for the deaths of two officers.
