Germany to conduct investigation into Pentagon's smuggling of arms to Syrian opposition after initial bombshell report went viral

Pentagon arms
The German government has opened a probe into an illegal Pentagon arms trafficking operation after a bombshell investigative report on the secret program went viral this week.

On Wednesday we reported on the continuing Pentagon arms pipeline to Syria which runs through Europe, the Balkans, and Caucuses, and which is based on a shady network of private contractors and altered US government paperwork. The Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) and the Balkan Investigative Reporting Network (BIRN) produced conclusive evidence and internal memos proving that not only is the Pentagon currently involved in shipping up to $2.2 billion worth of (mostly old Soviet) weapons from private dealers to US-backed Syrian militants, but is actually manipulating paperwork such as end-user certificates in order to conceal the ultimate destinations of the weaponry (in this case Syria).

The new investigation also confirms Bulgarian journalist Dilyana Gaytandzhieva's prior findings, which exposed the role of Azerbaijan-operated Silk Way Airlines in the weapons airlifts. Though independent journalists and regional monitoring groups have been digging into the Pentagon arms shipments throughout the summer, mainstream European and American press were reluctant to cover the story, even as a steady flow of incontrovertible proof emerged online in the form of documents, photos, and videos of mysterious cargo planes being loaded with weapons. Over the past two weeks WikiLeaks has also highlighted the emerging details of a developing story which saw at least one journalist come under scrutiny by European security officials.

Comment: "...disgusting US government criminality" is right - but what else is new?

Tit for tat? U.S. accuses Russia of bombing U.S.-backed SDF in Syria

The US-led coalition has released a statement claiming that Russian forces struck US-backed forces north of Deir Ezzor city, on the eastern bank of the Euphrates River on September 16.

According to the statement, US-led coalition troops were deployed alongside the so-called Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) when Russian strikes hit a target east of the Euphrates River injruing some SDF members. No coalition troops suffered injures as a result of the incident.
"At approximately 12:30 a.m. GMT Sept. 16, Russian forces struck a target east of the Euphrates River in Syria near Dayr Az Zawr, causing injuries to Coalition partner forces.

Russian munitions impacted a location known to the Russians to contain Syrian Democratic Forces and Coalition advisors. Several SDF fighters were wounded and received medical care as a result of the strike.

Multinational Coalition troops advising and assisting the SDF were present but not wounded as a result of the Russian strike. "Coalition officials are available and the de-confliction line with Russia is open 24 hours per day," said Coalition commander Lt. Gen. Paul E. Funk II. "We put our full efforts into preventing unnecessary escalation among forces that share ISIS as our common enemy," said Funk.

The Coalition and its partners remain committed to the defeat of ISIS and continued de-confliction with Russian officials. Coalition forces and partners always retain the right of self-defense," the statement reads.
Earlier on September 16, the SDF released a statement claiming that 6 SDF members were injured as a result of the airstrikes and arguing that "some parties are attempting to obstruct SDF progress" in the Deir Ezzor countryside.

Comment: U.S. officials would like to pretend that the SDF are just your average freedom fighters saving Syria from evil terrorists. Not quite. They may have played a central role in clearing northern Syria of ISIS, but the fact still remains that they are a fighting force aligned with an invading army (i.e. the Americans). So it's no wonder Assad's adviser, Bouthaina Shaaban, said this in an interview with a Lebanese media source today:
"Whether it's the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), or ISIS or any illegitimate foreign force in the country... we will fight and work against them so our land is freed completely from any aggressor" ... She added that the US-backed SDF captured areas from ISIS "without any fighting" in Deir Ezzor province. "But they will not get what they want," the Syrian official added, implying that the SDF drive against ISIS in Deir Ezzor province is just to capture oil-rich areas. The comments come as earlier a commander with the SDF, Ahmed Abu Khawla, had said that his fighting force would not "allow" the Syrian forces to get to the eastern bank of the Euphrates river, as reported by Fort Russ News.
The U.S./SDF want to keep the Syrians and Russians on the western banks of the Euphrates. Too bad it's not their call.

As for the strike on the SDF:
"The Syrian Air Force is absolutely not responsible for the airstrike that hit the Kurdish forces located in the eastern bank of the Euphrates River," the military source told Muraselon.

"As part of our mutual and continuous cooperation, we - the Syrian military - are informed in advance with and sorties conducted by the Russian Air Force. Hereby, I can confirm that our friend the Russians haven't conducted any airstrike against the Kurds in east Deir Ezzor," the source added.
Either the SDF is play-acting, or the Russians are giving the Americans a taste of their own medicine.

Russia says Syrian government forces have crossed the Euphrates River in their push to liberate the Dayr al-Zawr Province from Daesh, ignoring a warning by a ragtag group of militants that receives US backing.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Friday that the Syrian army was already on the river's eastern side.

A commander with the SDF, Ahmed Abu Khawla, had earlier said that the group would not "allow" the Syrian forces to get to the eastern bank of the river.

Dayr al-Zawr is an important battleground. Daesh has mobilized its forces and moved heavy weaponry to the province to make it its main staging area in the face of increasing defeats elsewhere in the country. The liberation of a stretch of land in Dayr-al-Zawr that borders Iraq would be particularly important because it would stop the Takfiri terrorists' cross-border transit between Syria and Iraq.

Syria's ultimate control of the oil-rich province would also help revive its economy.

The German prosecutor?s office in Kaiserslautern says it is looking into a report that the Pentagon used Ramstein Air Base to transport weapons covertly to rebel fighters in Syria, an allegation, that if true, might have broken German law
The German prosecutor's office in Kaiserslautern said Friday it is looking into a report that the Pentagon used Ramstein Air Base to transport weapons covertly to rebel fighters in Syria - an allegation, that if true, might have broken German law.

Ramstein - a key U.S. military logistical hub overseas from which cargo is ferried throughout Europe, the Middle East and Africa - was linked to Washington's effort beginning in 2013 to arm Syrian rebels fighting the Islamic State, according to a report Tuesday in the German newspaper Sueddeutsche Zeitung.

The weapons transfer through Ramstein would have required permission from the German government, the report stated.

Officials with Germany's Economic Affairs Ministry told Stars and Stripes that the ministry did not give the U.S. military permission to transport weapons to Syria through the country. They denied having any knowledge of such activities.

The US does not want peace in Korea

Kim Jong Un
© AP Photo/Ahn Young-joonPeople watch a TV news program showing North Korean leader Kim Jong Un at the Seoul Railway Station in Seoul, Sunday, Sept. 3, 2017.
You'd have to laugh - if it were not so grave. The Trump administration says that it is running out of patience for a diplomatic solution to the Korea crisis.

This pseudo piousness comes from a US government that continually refuses to enter into direct negotiations with Kim Jong-un, the leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).

So, how can the US say it is growing weary from diplomatic effort when it hasn't even bothered to breathe an earnest word of diplomacy - despite being urged to do so by Russia, China, and other world leaders?

French President Emmanuel Macron in a phone call with Russia's Vladimir Putin was the latest world leader to endorse Moscow's appeal for negotiations over the Korea crisis.

As Russia's ambassador to the UN, Vassily Nebenzia, pointed out, the latest resolution concerning North Korea, voted on September 11, specifically calls on all parties, including the United States, to open negotiations and commit to finding a peaceful resolution.

Therefore, by not fulfilling diplomatic responsibility, the US is not complying with the UN resolution.

The Libyan Government of National Accord (GNA) considers Russia to be an important player in stabilizing the situation in divided Libya, GNA Deputy Prime Minister Ahmed Maiteeq told Sputnik Friday, after discussing the possibility of a Moscow meeting between various Libyan factions with a Russian diplomat.

"We don't mind, we see Russia as an important player in creating stability in Libya and that is why we want the Russian influence and the Russian presence in Libya to be as positive as possible on that issue. If they send a clear message to all parties that they should come and work closely to bring stability, we don't mind any meeting in Moscow," Maiteeq said.

Maiteeq added that he did not have any further details or a concrete time frame for this meeting.

Best of the Web: The NYT's campaign of Yellow Journalism against Russia

new york times
The New York Times' descent into yellow journalism over Russia recalls the sensationalism of Hearst and Pulitzer leading to the Spanish-American War, but the risks to humanity are much greater now.

Reading The New York Times these days is like getting a daily dose of the "Two Minutes Hate" as envisioned in George Orwell's 1984, except applied to America's new/old enemy Russia. Even routine international behavior, such as Russia using fictitious names for potential adversaries during a military drill, is transformed into something weird and evil.

In the snide and alarmist style that the Times now always applies to Russia, reporter Andrew Higgins wrote - referring to a fictitious war-game "enemy" - "The country does not exist, so it has neither an army nor any real citizens, though it has acquired a feisty following of would-be patriots online. Starting on Thursday, however, the fictional state, Veishnoriya, a distillation of the Kremlin's darkest fears about the West, becomes the target of the combined military might of Russia and its ally Belarus."

This snarky front-page story in Thursday's print editions also played into the Times' larger narrative about Russia as a disseminator of "fake news." You see the Russkies are even inventing "fictional" enemies to bully. Hah-hah-hah! The article was entitled, "Russia's War Games With Fake Enemies Cause Real Alarm."

Moscow urges Washington to take diplomatic steps if it seeks 'strict implementation' of N. Korea sanctions

UN Security Council
UN Security Council
Russia's UN envoy has reminded Washington that while Moscow and Beijing are implementing the sanctions part of the UNSC resolution, the US must deliver on its obligation to pursue diplomacy to defuse the crisis.

The UN Security Council has "condemned the highly provocative launch of a ballistic missile" by North Korea, the 15-member body said in a statement following an emergency closed door session that was called in wake of the 19th missile test by North Korea this year.

The Security Council stressed that all member states must fully, comprehensively and immediately implement all relevant Security Council Resolutions, in particular, Resolution 2375," rotating president and Permanent Representative of Ethiopia, Tekeda Alemu said reading out a joint statement following the emergency meeting.

On Monday, the UN Security Council unanimously adopted Resolution 2375, following the sixth nuclear test which North Korea carried out on September 3. The international legal document placed a cap on oil product supplies to North Korea, as well as a ban on its textiles exports.

Comment: Pyongyang must strive for parity of "real force" with Washington on the Korean peninsula so that US leaders "dare not talk about military options," North Korean leader Kim Jong-un told defense officials during the latest test of IRBM.
"Our final goal is to establish the equilibrium of real force with the US and make the US rulers dare not talk about military option for the DPRK," Kim said Friday, according to state news agency KCNA.

The North Korean leader also "stressed the need to run at full speed and straight, continuing to qualitatively consolidate the military attack capacity for [a] nuclear counterattack the US cannot cope with."

"We should clearly show the big power chauvinists how our state attain the goal of completing its nuclear force despite their limitless sanctions and blockade," he added, KCNA reports.
Russia's President Vladimir Putin and his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron have agreed on the importance of defusing the Korean peninsula stand-off through diplomacy, urging all parties to engage in direct talks.
The two leaders compared opinions on the Korean Peninsula crisis during telephone talks on Friday.

They are unanimous that further escalation on the Korean Peninsula cannot be allowed and that its consequences could be irremediable.

Vladimir Putin and Russia versus Zionist Fairytales

Putin
Did you read the latest news that Vladimir Putin is rich and evil? Oh, you don't read anymore, more power to you. Fake news has it that the Russian president has a new "secret" holiday mansion worth untold millions. Furthermore, some of the stories tell of Putin being the world's richest and most evil man. For those of you who do not believe in fairytales, here's a candid look at what Russians are really up against.

My initial reaction to reading "Drone footage shows Putin's secret island mansion" at 9 News Australia was, "So what if the leader of Russia is rich?" I would have skimmed the article and moved on but for a familiar name popping up. I'll get to the ousted industrialist shark Bill Browder in a minute, but first it's important for readers to understand that Putin actually has little need of money in the traditional sense. Every financial magazine, every expert, and hordes of guessing investigators have tried for years to count Vladimir Putin's gold, and to no avail. Some say he is worth more than Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos combined, but nobody can trace down this immense wealth. Amid all the speculation as to "why" the Panama Papers could not convict Putin, the pointedly obvious shines through. Nobody can trace Putin's fortune because there isn't one. But this is fodder for another story, let me move on to the latest Alexei Navalny fairytale and to this Browder character cited in the Australian piece.

Republicans unhappy after AG Sessions refuses to charge Lois Lerner in IRS Tea Party scandal

Jeff Sessions
GOP members are NOT happy with the Department of Justice after notifying Congress on Friday that it will not charge IRS Lois Lerner over her alleged involvement in targeting Conservative groups.

Washington Examiner reports:
"[T]he Department determined that reopening the criminal investigation would not be appropriate based on the available evidence," Assistant Attorney General Stephen Boyd wrote in a letter to Kevin Brady, the chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee.

Brady called that a "terrible decision" that suggested political appointees are not held accountable under the law.

"I have the utmost respect for Attorney General [Jeff] Sessions, but I'm troubled by his Department's lack of action to fully respond to our request and deliver accountability," the Texas lawmaker said in a statement.

Peter Roskam, the Illinois chairman of the tax subcommittee, also criticized the decision, terming it "a miscarriage of justice."
As TGP reported moments ago, the Department of Justice has announced it will not charge former IRS official Lois Lerner in the highly controversial IRS scandal, which saw numerous Conservative groups allegedly targeted by the Department.
