Labour MP Lisa Nandy just revealed in parliament the embarrassing inconsistencies between Prime Minister Theresa May and Home Secretary Amber Rudd over documents being hidden from the inquiry into allegations of child abuse by MP Cyril Smith.

"The Home Secretary told me that some papers would be withheld from the Cyrill Smith inquiry for national security reasons," Nandy told the House of Commons, yet she added: "this week the Prime Minister has written to me to say we are clear that the work of the security services will not prevent information being shared with other such inquiries."

- And she challenged Amber Rudd to confirm "for the survivors of Cyril Smith who have waited for decades" for justice - whether papers on historic allegations of child abuse against Smith will be withheld from inquiries for reasons of national security.

Comment: Funny how the Cyril Smiths of the world don't get nearly as much media attention as the Harvey Weinsteins. Why might that be? Oh yes, national security. If the public knew what their "responsible leaders" got up to behind closed doors, they would be lynched.

'Google's plan to isolate Russian media is an act of information warfare' - Russia mulls equivalent response

Google's announcement that it is working to reduce the presence of Russian media in its news feeds has been slammed by lawmakers and political commentators as an act of aggression which will have a global impact on the freedom of speech and thought.

"This is an open form of information warfare waged right now - a bombardment, a direct aggression" against the Russian news outlets, Andrey Svintsov, deputy chairman of the State Duma Committee for Information Policy, Information Technologies and Communications, told RT. The lawmaker explained that tweaking search results for the news category would cut off the global readership that remains interested in the Russian position on global events, calling it a "powerful blow" to the freedom of speech.

"We as MPs should think about... limiting [the use of] the Google search engine, as well as certain social networks belonging to this holding in Russia," Svintsov said. Meanwhile, the head of the Russian Upper House Commission for Information Policy, Senator Aleksey Pushkov, also wondered whether Google should be "de-ranked" in Russia in a tit-for-tat response.

Lying to the FBI is a felony that can entail serious punishment.

But supporting violations of international law by Israeli settlers is, well, generally ignored or acclaimed by many in Washington.

George Papadopoulos, former foreign policy adviser to presidential candidate Donald Trump, provides a prime example.

Americans learned Monday that he pleaded guilty early last month to making a false statement to the FBI "about the timing, extent and nature of his relationships and interactions with certain foreign nationals whom he understood to have close connections with senior Russian government officials."

He was arrested in July and later agreed to cooperate with prosecutors.

Close readers of the news may have also learned of Papadopoulos' close connection to Israel and its West Bank settlers.

In a video addressed to the settlers coinciding with Trump's inauguration as president, Papadopoulos said, "We are looking forward to ushering in a new relationship with all of Israel, including the historic Judea and Samaria" - calling the West Bank by the name Israel uses.

Comment: Despite the lip service and coerced support from spineless American politicians, Israel is failing all over the place. They may have gotten what they wanted initially in Iraq and Libya, but their plans for Syria (and Iraqi Kurdistan) have been an utter failure, and the result is that Iran (the real target), Syria, Iraq and Hezbollah are stronger than ever. While there is no justice for Palestinians in sight, it is still quite a pleasure to see Israel failing so much, and freaking out in the process.

France's invitation to beleaguered Lebanese premier Saad Hariri for him and his family to spend "a few days in Paris" has been viewed as French President Emmanuel Macron stepping in with deft soft power to resolve tensions between Saudi Arabia and Lebanon.

Less charitably, what Macron is really doing is giving cynical cover to the Saudi rulers for their extraordinary acts of aggression towards Lebanon and their violation of that country's sovereignty.

Two of Hariri's children were left in Saudi capital Riyadh while he visited France over the weekend. Were they being used as hostages by the Saudis to ensure that Hariri maintains the Saudi spin on events? Certainly, the arrangement raises suspicions, but the French president sought instead to affect a "normal" nothing-is-unusual appearance.

Lebanese President Michel Aoun last week publicly accused Saudi Arabia of holding Hariri in Riyadh against his will. Aoun said the Saudi rulers were violating international law by detaining Hariri and forcing his resignation as prime minister of Lebanon. Such acts were tantamount to aggression, said President Aoun.

Steve Mostyn, Democrat mega donor to Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, died after "a sudden onset and battle with a mental health issue."

While the death appears to be suicide, the Mostyn family has yet to comment on what the cause of death is.

Mostyn, a famous Houston-area trial lawyer was one of the country's biggest donors to Democrat causes.

The Mostyns were co-founders of the Ready for Hillary PAC, a political action committee supporting Clinton's unsuccessful campaign for president. At the same time, state campaign finance records show he contributed to a police-affiliated PAC that supported some Republican primary candidates.
In 2016, Mostyn gave Clinton $1 million.

Eight women have told The Washington Post that longtime television host Charlie Rose made unwanted sexual advances toward them, including lewd phone calls, walking around naked in their presence, or groping their breasts, buttocks or genital areas.

The women were employees or aspired to work for Rose at the "Charlie Rose" show from the late 1990s to as recently as 2011. They ranged in age from 21 to 37 at the time of the alleged encounters. Rose, 75, whose show airs on PBS and Bloomberg TV, also co-hosts "CBS This Morning" and is a contributing correspondent for "60 Minutes."

There are striking commonalities in the accounts of the women, each of whom described their interactions with Rose in multiple interviews with The Post. For all of the women, reporters interviewed friends, colleagues or family members who said the women had confided in them about aspects of the incidents. Three of the eight spoke on the record.

The 93 year old has been in power since Zimbabwe gained independence from Britain in 1980.

Mugabe's future had been the subject of intense speculation in recent days, after the Central Committee of the ruling ZANU-PF Party gave him an ultimatum to step down.

Free Syrian Army begins to crumble as speculation mounts of US withdrawing aid

Jordan-based Al-Hadath News reported that the Free Syrian Army has recently dissolved one of its units which consisted of 180 fighters. Hussam Shueib, a Syrian expert in militant groups, opined to Sputnik that it was done at the behest of the US and explained why.

The information was also confirmed by the websites of some Syrian military groups which cited one of the fighters of the dissolved units as saying that 180 militants have been dismissed and paid $2,000 each.

Hussam Shueib, a Syrian expert in militant groups, has commented to Sputnik Arabic on the move, suggesting that it was done on the order of the US, which is "experiencing disappointment" over the failure of the FSA support campaign.

Members of the Arab League have met in Cairo at the behest of the Saudi regime, to discuss the supposed "threat of Iran". The meeting featured all the crude, undiplomatic and nonfactual language about Iran that one has come to expect from American, Israeli and Saudi Arabian spokesmen.

Highlights from the meeting included a statement from the Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir who stated,
"We will not stand idly by in the face of Iran's aggression....Showing leniency toward Iran will not leave any Arab capital safe from those ballistic missiles....

Iran created agents in the region, such as the Houthi and Hezbollah militias, in total disregard for all international principles".

President Assad of Syria has come unexpected to the Russian resort city of Sochi, where he is having high level talks with Russia's President Putin and with Russia's senior military leadership.

This is the second trip President Assad is known to have made to Russia since Russia intervened militarily in Syria in September 2015. The first trip came in late October 2015, shortly after the Russian military intervention began. Of course there may have been - and probably have been - other secret Assad trips to Russia, which have not been announced.

At the time of Assad's first trip to Moscow the situation in Syria remained very fraught. The Jihadi rebels still held eastern Aleppo and had effectively surrounded the rest of the city and were pressing on the remaining territories the Syrian government still controlled along the coast. Further east the whole of central and eastern Syria had fallen under the control of ISIS, which had recently captured Palmyra. The Syrian military was over-stretched and exhausted, and in urgent need of time and help to sort itself out.

In summary, President Assad came to Moscow in October 2015 a drowning man to whom the Russians had just thrown a lifeline.

The situation is totally transformed today.


Comment: President Assad's words to the participants of the military conference:

What Putin and Russia did for Syria is by no exaggeration an act of true heroism. While the U.S. and NATO have brought nothing but chaos and destruction to the region, Russia has saved Syria from that fate. It's amazing that this fact is not widely recognized. Instead, Russia is demonized in the west. But that is okay. Heroes don't need praise. They just get the job done, and fight the monster of chaos.
