Best of the Web: Shill 'Morning Joe' guest praises AG Rosenstein: "You need a deep state"

Richard Haass
Well, the truth finally came out on "Morning Joe."

On Wednesday, frequent "Morning Joe" guest Richard Haass suggested that not only did America have a "deep state," but upstanding career bureaucrats like Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein was proof that the country needed one.

The surprising admission came after a lengthy montage the show ran of Republicans praising Rosenstein's service.

"It was great listening to that. That was a civics lesson and it's why you need a deep state," said Haass, who also serves as the longtime president of the Council on Foreign Relations.

"You need people whose commitment is not to the person, but is to the process and the law," he added. "You would want every high school kid in America to watch that. You know good for him. That's just what this country needs. And that's kind of who we are. That's our DNA. That was actually a really good moment."

Comment: Countries obviously do need deep states. Governments could not function without some continuity between administrations. But if anything, Rosenstein is an example of why deep states can be hindrances to actual democracy. Funny that Haass sees the deep state's worst features (and worst exemplars) as a positive reason for its existence. Or, actually, not so funny - just very revealing.

Turkish FM Cavusoglu: Turkey will 'retaliate' if US halts weapon sales over purchase of Russian arms

In a deepening rift between two major NATO allies, Turkey says it will retaliate if Washington stops the sale of US weapons over Ankara's decision to buy Russian military hardware. Such a move would be "wrong" and "illogical."

"If the United States imposes sanctions on us or takes such a step, Turkey will absolutely retaliate," Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu told CNN Turk. "What needs to be done is the US needs to let go of this."

"Turkey is not a country under your orders, it is an independent country... speaking to such a country from above, dictating what it can and cannot buy, is not a correct approach and does not fit our alliance," he said, referring to the fact that both countries are part of NATO.

Giuliani didn't stumble on Trump admission - he knows exactly what he's doing

Rudy Giuliani
Former federal prosecutor and New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani has a simple message to Robert Mueller: Put up or shut up.

The day after President Trump's attorney Rudy Giuliani unexpectedly admitted on cable news that his client had reimbursed Trump lawyer Michael Cohen for the payout to Stormy Daniels, he was roundly criticized for having gone off the reservation and compromising the White House. Nothing could be farther from the truth.

In fact, Giuliani, a bare-knuckles brawler in the rings of both politics and litigation, was laying down a marker. The former New York mayor is sending a clear message to Special Counsel Robert Mueller: It's been more than a year; show your cards. Put up or shut up.

Giuliani was showing his cards when he explained that Trump had personally covered the $130,000 payout to Daniels. Cohen was on retainer, and apparently empowered to take care of these kinds of situations without telling Trump, thereby insulating his boss. This might not be pretty, or the kind of thing a Mitt Romney would do, but it's not illegal.

Israeli defense chief tells Russian daily: 'We don't want a fight with Russia but if air defense systems fire on us, we will respond'

Israel doesn't want a fight with Russia, Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman told the Russian newspaper Kommersant, in an interview published Thursday. "We always take Russian interests into account, and hope they take Israel's security interests into account," he said.

His comments follow several aerial attacks on Syria that have been ascribed to Israel, including an attack on the T4 airbase, which Russia claimed undermined Syria's stability.

Relations between Israel and Russia took a tense turn recently because of the Russian plan to arm Bashar Assad's regime in Syria with advanced anti-aircraft defense systems, despite Israeli objections.

"If the S-300 systems aren't aimed at us, that's one thing," Lieberman said. "If they open fire on our aircraft, we certainly will respond."

Last week Kommersant reported that top Russian officials said that if Israel attacked the S-300 system, it would have "catastrophic consequences."

Donald Trump's lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, says the president is committed to regime change in Iran and will most likely tear up the nuclear deal before he begins supporting protesters to oust the supreme leader from power.

"We got a president who is tough, who does not listen to the people who are naysayers, and a president who is as committed to regime change as we are," former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani - US President Donald Trump's personal friend and a long-time supporter - said in a speech to the Iran Freedom Convention for Democracy and Human Rights in Washington.

NATO in Afghanistan is a dagger struck into the heart of Asia

Taliban
On April 27 the NATO secretary-general Jens Stoltenberg issued an ultimatum to the Taliban fighting the US and NATO allied forces that have invaded and occupied Afghanistan; negotiate - meaning surrender - or be destroyed. Taking his cue from the Nazi diktats in the countries they invaded and occupied across Europe in the Second World War, he acted like a Reinhardt Heydrich, the Nazi SS Security General, making threats against the resistance on behalf of the warlords in Washington and the other NATO capitals and like the German Nazis before him, repeated the same lies the Germans used; that NATO's presence "creates the conditions for peace and reconciliation." But a more severe war lurks under their guise of peace.

The threats did not stop with the Taliban. He also warned Pakistan to "take additional steps to close all "terrorist sanctuaries" and "encouraged Iran and Russia to contribute to regional stability," meaning that they should accept the American and NATO occupation of the country and abandon the joint Russian, Iranian, Chinese efforts at concluding a peaceful resolution of the war in Afghanistan so that the Americans will have no pretext to stay.

Best of the Web: Trump circles reportedly hired Israeli spy company 'Black Cube' to dig up dirt on Iran deal negotiators

Israeli Black Cube
Someone tipped off the Observer, the Guardian's Sunday edition, about an attempt of Donald Trump flunkies to find dirt about the people who negotiated the nuclear deal (JCPOA) with Iran. An Israeli spy company was hired to set up traps. One of the victims describes how that happened. The modus operandi seems similar to one described in another dirty story which surfaced about a year ago. The company, not named by the Observer, in question is Black Cube.

The Observer: Revealed: Trump team hired spy firm for 'dirty ops' on Iran arms deal
Aides to Donald Trump, the US president, hired an Israeli private intelligence agency to orchestrate a "dirty ops" campaign against key individuals from the Obama administration who helped negotiate the Iran nuclear deal, the Observer can reveal.

People in the Trump camp contacted private investigators in May last year to "get dirt" on Ben Rhodes, who had been one of Barack Obama's top national security advisers, and Colin Kahl, deputy assistant to Obama, as part of an elaborate attempt to discredit the deal.
...
Sources said that officials linked to Trump's team contacted investigators days after Trump visited Tel Aviv a year ago, his first foreign tour as US president.
...
According to incendiary documents seen by the Observer, investigators contracted by the private intelligence agency were told to dig into the personal lives and political careers of Rhodes, a former deputy national security adviser for strategic communications, and Kahl, a national security adviser to the former vice-president Joe Biden. Among other things they were looking at personal relationships, any involvement with Iran-friendly lobbyists, and if they had benefited personally or politically from the peace deal.
...
Both Rhodes and Kahl said they had no idea of the campaign against them.

Zakharova grills US State Department on White Helmets abrupt aid cutoff

Moscow would like to know the reasons for Washington's decision to freeze funding for the White Helmets volunteer group, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said at a briefing on Friday.

"Fantastic news came today - the US Department of State has frozen funding for the White Helmets non-governmental organization active in Syria," she said. "What's wrong? Didn't they like the last film? Maybe, there are some other reasons?" Zakharova added.

"In fact, we would like to know exactly how much money the White Helmets had received from the US government and governments of other countries, including the three states [the US, Great Britain and France - TASS] that carried out air strikes on Syria [on April 14]," the Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman said, adding that this issue was of particular importance as it could help understand "how this mechanism for producing false information operates."

Comment: This is a valid question: Does the US consider the White Helmets damaged goods?

The love-seeking singles of Facebook's new dating service, privacy experts say, may not be prepared for what they'll encounter: sham profiles, expanded data gathering and a new wave of dating fraud.

Facebook - under fire for viral misinformation, fake accounts and breaches of trust - said this week it will soon offer a new dating service designed to help its users find love, giving the world's largest social network a uniquely intimate vantage point on its users' romantic desires and personal lives.

The service will allow people older than 18 to create a dating profile - separate from their main profile and invisible to their friends - that it shows to potential matches based on common interests, dating preferences, location and mutual friends, company officials said.

When the time comes Mike Pence will be invited to McCain's funeral - but not Donald Trump

John Mccain news conference

Arizona Senator John McCain's funeral plans reportedly include Vice President Mike Pence, but not President Trump, according to the New York Times.

The Times on Saturday reported on the "memories and regrets" the senator shared with friends who have come to visit his Arizona ranch. The article included details about funeral plans for the ailing senator, who is suffering from an aggressive form of brain cancer.

"His intimates have informed the White House that their current plan for his funeral is for Vice President Mike Pence to attend the service to be held in Washington's National Cathedral but not President Trump, with whom Mr. McCain has had a rocky relationship," according to the Times.

Comment: It was also McCain who gave the infamous dodgy Steele dossier to intel agencies to hurt Trump. Not a very friendly move, especially when considering that the dossier was a complete fabrication.
