The Times on Saturday reported on the "memories and regrets" the senator shared with friends who have come to visit his Arizona ranch. The article included details about funeral plans for the ailing senator, who is suffering from an aggressive form of brain cancer.
"His intimates have informed the White House that their current plan for his funeral is for Vice President Mike Pence to attend the service to be held in Washington's National Cathedral but not President Trump, with whom Mr. McCain has had a rocky relationship," according to the Times.
McCain's "rocky relationship" with Trump famously began early in the 2016 GOP primary, when then candidate Trump said McCain was "not a war hero" in response to a disparaging remark the senator made about Trump's supporters.
The Arizona senator withdrew his support of Trump after the "Access Hollywood" tapes came to light, and has been a prominent critic of both Trump and his policies ever since, even managing to return to Washington from surgery late last year to ensure the defeat of the GOP healthcare bill.
McCain's upcoming memoir, "The Restless Wave," will be released in June. Among the revelations included in the book is the admission that the 2008 GOP presidential nominee regretted picking then Alaska Governor Sarah Palin over his friend, former Connecticut Senator Joseph Lieberman.
"It was sound advice that I could reason for myself," McCain wrote about getting advice that appointing Lieberman would alienate the GOP base. "But my gut told me to ignore it and I wish I had."
Comment: It was also McCain who gave the infamous dodgy Steele dossier to intel agencies to hurt Trump. Not a very friendly move, especially when considering that the dossier was a complete fabrication.
