So much for "new kind of politics": Theresa May's husband linked to Paradise Papers

Theresa May's husband has been linked to the Paradise Papers after his company was accused of arranging investments in tax havens. Thousands of documents have exposed how Britain's mega rich invest their money abroad to legally avoid paying hefty tax bills.

Although not illegal, they are depriving the Treasury of juicy tax revenues at a time when many Britons are having their welfare payments slashed, and the National Health Service (NHS) faces a yawning budget black hole.

Philip May, the PM's husband, is a relationships manager for investment-management firm Capital Group. His is the latest big name to be associated with the papers.

According to the documents, Capital Group allegedly used offshore-registered funds to make investments in a Bermuda-registered company. Jeremy Corbyn's Labour Party wants to 'flush Phil' to answer some questions.

Former member of security services to Georgian ex-president Saakashvili reveals he was hired to be a sniper and "sow chaos" at Maidan in 2014

Maiden protest

Comment: Gordon Hahn sums up the new revelations on the previously mysterious snipers at Maidan. They come from an Italian documentary, published on Facebook by the world's leading expert on the Maidan sniper attack, Ottawa University Professor Ivan Katchanovski:
...it appears not to have been a group managed by Russian President Vladimir Putin's advisor, Vyacheslav Surkov, or a Russian 'wet team' as claimed by US ambassador to Ukraine Geoffrey Pyatt. Rather, it included both Lithuanian and Georgian snipers recruited by Mamuka Mamushvili, a Georgian military advisor to former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili, Washington's 'beacon of democracy' in Eurasia, and an American military operative, Brian Christopher Boyenger, formerly of the famous 101st Airborne Division, based in Fort Campbell, Tennessee. Mamuka Mumashvili organized and fought with the Georgian National Legion, which included according to one FB post I show below, "three retired US officers." One of the Georgian snipers allegedly recruited by Mamulashvili and Boyenger was a member of Saakashvili's body guard detail at the time.

Georgian snipers, who previously served in Saakashvili security, reportedly confess to massacring along with Lithuanian snipers both police and protesters on the Maidan in a new Italian documentary film: "Everyone started shooting two or three shots at a time. It went on for fifteen, twenty minutes. We had no choice. We were ordered to shoot both on the police and the demonstrators, without any difference. I was totally outraged." So Georgian Alexander Revazishvilli remembers the tragic shootout of 20 February 2014 in Kiev when a group of mysterious snipers opened fire on crowds and cops massacring over 80 people.

Comment: Don't expect this damning admission to be discussed in the US.

Economist: Dollar will soon no longer be the 'kingpin currency'

The greenback's status as the world's most powerful currency has come into question, and could soon be shattered, even though contracts based on the US dollar dominate global markets.

Economist Jim O'Neill says investors "have to believe" it is not going to be the kingpin currency forever. He explained it is because of intensified speculation China intends to challenge the dollar dominance.

When asked to what extent he felt the dollar's influence could be dwindling, the former chairman of Goldman Sachs Asset Management told the International Petroleum Exhibition Conference (ADIPEC) in Abu Dhabi that he has two contradictory views on that.

"Firstly, it's never going to happen because the dollar is the dollar. However... Germany has recently become China's number one trade partner, and it is when you start to see things like this that you have to believe the dollar is not going to be kingpin in the future like it is today."

Turkish diplomat from Erdogan's party: US trying to justify actions of terrorists in Raqqa, praises unity of Russia, Turkey and Iran in Syria

lavrov turkey
In a further sign that Turkey's new narrative on Syria is one of cooperation between Astana peace process members Russia, Iran and Turkey and that by contrast, the US is unilaterally operating in Syria with a diametric agenda, Metin Kulunk, a member of the Turkish Parliament from President Erdogan's AKP, has stated this view with supreme frankness. The statement comes as self-appointed Kurdish leaders in Syria called on the United States to remain in Syria, even as ISIS has been militarily defeated.

Kulunk stated,
"Today this is a fact that cannot be denied. The US, as a response to the joint actions undertaken by Iran, Russia and Turkey, is trying in every possible way to justify the actions of the terrorist organisation in Raqqa, representing a direct and immediate threat to our security".
He further stated that there is an "inextricable link between Daesh, Kurdistan's Worker's Party [PKK] and FETO [organization of the Islamic preacher Fethullah Gรผlen, recognized in Turkey as a terrorist group]".

The link between the US proxy group, SDF, a Kurdish led militia which Syria names as a terrorist organisation, was made clear when SDF militants were photographed in Raqqa, hoisting a giant photo of Abdullah Ocalan, the terrorist PKK leader who is currently in prison.

Mainstream media 'shocked' at 60,000-strong nationalist march in Warsaw - but are they really?

The mainstream media coverage of the annual nationalist march in Poland was far more critical this year than on previous occasions. Considering how similar events were previously covered, analysts wonder if the change results from Brussels's feud with Warsaw.

Something terrible happened last Saturday in Poland. A crowd of 60,000 neo-Nazis, fascists, white supremacists, far-right nationalists, anti-Semites and religious fanatics marched in the streets of the capital Warsaw in the biggest display of bigotry and hatred the world has seen in years. And like-minded radicals from all around Europe sent their delegations to the rally. And the Polish government not only failed to condemn this march of the right, but dared to call the event "beautiful." The terror!

At least, that's what one could read in the aftermath. The indignation and outrage was expressed on Twitter from both sides of the Atlantic, and by both conservatives and liberals.

US troops ignored child sex abuse in Afghanistan because they were taught it was 'culturally acceptable'

U.S. troops deploying to Afghanistan were taught for years that child sex abuse is a "culturally accepted practice" in the country, and were provided no guidance that it constituted a violation of the law and human rights until late 2015.

A new Pentagon inspector general report reveals that although troops weren't explicitly discouraged from reporting cases of child sex abuse, the issue was not discussed until numerous media outlets reported that troops were encouraged to ignore local Afghan officials abusing little boys.

Interviews of troops from the report suggest that military officials didn't really care much about stopping child sex abuse.

A mistrial was declared in the bribery, conspiracy and fraud trial of Senator Bob Menendez (D-New Jersey), as the 12-person jury deadlocked on all 18 counts against the Senator and his co-defendant following the 11-week trial.

Newark, New Jersey US District Court Judge William H. Walls declared a mistrial Thursday following a 15-hour jury deliberation. Federal prosecutors have not stated whether or not they will retry Menendez, 63, and co-defendant Salomon Melgen, 63, a wealthy Florida eye doctor and friend of Menendez, on federal charges of bribery, conspiracy and fraud that were brought against them in the case, the North Jersey Media Group reported.

The most serious charge levied against the two men by the US Department of Justice carried a maximum prison sentence of 20 years. Both Menendez and Melegen have denied the charges against them.

Erdogan slams US support for ISIS, says Turkey does not want allied relationship in Syrian offensive

Turkish President Erdogan has claimed that US actions in Syria are not in line with relations between allies.

Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has accused Washington of sponsoring the Daesh terrorist group as well as failing to fulfill the promise to withdraw Syrian Kurdish forces from the Syrian regions liberated from Daesh militants.

"They [the US] said they were fighting Daesh, but what did they do instead? Gave Daesh a load of dollars... We do not want to enter into an allied relationship with them on Afrin. The United States has constantly violated our agreements. In Manbij, in Raqqa. When we offered to work there together, they promised that not a single member of the PYD [Syrian Kurdish Democratic Union Party] would remain there, don't worry," said Erdogan, expressing deep disappointment over the US' non-compliance with the agreements reached.

Russian senior senator says new Pentagon budget threatens normalization of Russia-US relations

The $700 billion US military spending bill, recently approved by the Senate, could destroy any future attempts to restore relations between the United States and the Russian Federation, the head of the upper house Foreign Relations Committee says.

"The US senate has approved the 2018 draft defense budget. Among other things the draft contains the part on 'countering Russian aggression' ... which definitely is not only new money allocated for the needs of the military, but also an attempt to create new long-term strategies that, if realized, can completely destroy any hope for normalization in Russia-US relations," Konstantin Kosachev wrote on Facebook.

Comment: The Pentagon budget has more to do with maintaining the military-industrial complex gravy train.

Ships under the Russian flag could get the exclusive right to transport oil and gas along the Northern Sea Route, according to Russian President Vladimir Putin who proposed the measure to boost the country's shipbuilding industry.

It will increase the volume of shipping, strengthen the position of the domestic shipping companies, and create additional opportunities for fleet renewal, he said.
