Lavrov lays out Russia's terms on Ukraine, Crimea, and nuclear arms (full interview)

In an interview with CBS, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has rebuked the network for suggesting Moscow is not ready to make concessions to end the Ukraine conflict. He stressed that Russia is committed to seeking a "balance of interests" with the US and Ukraine. Lavrov added that Russia is always ready for "serious and respectful" negotiations, unlike Kiev, which he accused of "talking through the media."

The top diplomat said talks with Washington are "moving in the right direction" because US president Donald Trump had recognized NATO's mistakes and the violation of Russian rights in Ukraine.

He welcomed Trump's ceasefire plan but demanded firm guarantees Ukraine would not use it to rebuild its military.

Responding to US accusations that Moscow has space-based weapons, Lavrov rejected the claims as false. He said that Russia has long promoted a UN treaty to ban nuclear weapons in outer space, which the US has refused to support.

Lavrov called Crimea being part of Russia a "done deal" and praised Trump for acknowledging it.

The Russian President has ordered to halt military operations during the upcoming 80th anniversary of the USSR's defeat of Nazi Germany.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has declared a ceasefire in the Ukraine conflict for three days in honor of the 80th anniversary of the defeat of Nazi Germany in World War II. The truce will last from May 8 to May 10th, the Kremlin has said.

Putin is said to have announced the ceasefire based on "humanitarian considerations" and has ordered the suspension of all military action against Ukraine's forces from midnight on May 7-8 to midnight on May 10-11.

The Kremlin noted that Moscow expects the Ukrainian side to abide by the truce and warned that if Kiev's forces violate it, the Russian military will give an "adequate and effective response."

Comment: Kiev honored the current ceasefire (April 27-28) with a drone attack.

At least one civilian was killed in the overnight raid, according to the local governor.

The Ukrainian military launched a massive overnight drone strike on Russia, with the vast majority of UAVs intercepted over Bryansk Region, according to the Defense Ministry.

Russian air defenses intercepted a total of 115 drones between 8:30pm Sunday and 4:35am Monday, including ten over Crimea and the Black Sea, two over Kursk Region, and one over Belgorod Region.

Some 102 drones were downed over Bryansk Region, where, according to Governor Aleksandr Bogomaz, the attack damaged civilian infrastructure and killed at least one person. He wrote on Telegram:
"The Kiev regime carried out another act of terrorism tonight. Unfortunately, the Ukrainian attack on the city of Bryansk killed a civilian and injured a woman. She was quickly taken to the hospital where she is receiving the necessary medical assistance."
Bryansk was also targeted in a massive drone raid last week, although to a much lesser extent and without casualties. Last Thursday, the Russian military downed a total of 87 Ukrainian UAVs - half of them over the Crimean Peninsula.

The UK could stage a provocation against Russia, and has a track record of conducting hostile activities against Moscow, the head of the country's Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR), Sergey Naryshkin, has claimed.

Speaking to TASS on Saturday, he did not rule out the possibility that the UK could deploy chemical weapons in Ukraine to frame Russia as the perpetrator.

"Britain could resort to provocations on the territory of any state if Britain is interested in it," the official said, adding that the SVR is well aware of London's covert hostile activities aimed at Russia.

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday expressed gratitude to North Korean soldiers and the country's leader, Kim Jong-un, for the role they played in repelling a Ukrainian incursion.

The Russian military reported last week the full liberation of border areas of Kursk Region, which Kiev seized last August, acknowledging for the first time that North Korean troops had participated in the operation.

"North Korean friends acted in the spirit of solidarity, justice and true camaraderie," Putin said in a statement. Pyongyang's mission was launched in connection with a bilateral treaty signed last June, which includes mutual defense clauses.

Comment: The size of the North Korean army is 1.2 million with 7.7 million reservists. Until now it did not have recent battle experience, but that has now changed, even if only a tiny fraction probably participated.

SOTT Focus: NewsReal: Yemen is Trump's War Now, And The Houthis Are Fighting Back

The 'random' terror attack in disputed Kashmir last week has apparently brought the two nuclear-armed powers of India and Pakistan to the brink of war. It probably won't come to anything serious, but this isn't the first time a major international incident has been sparked by a 'previously-unknown terror group in Pakistan'.

Meanwhile, in neighboring Iran, a gargantuan explosion at its largest port has gone largely unreported in the media - an explosion that looks remarkably similar to the one that decimated Lebanon's largest port 5 years ago. Hmmm, connection?

Meanwhile, in neighboring Yemen, hundreds of US missile strikes in recent weeks against Houthi targets have intensified to the point that Trump has arguably lost his claim to being the first US president since Carter to not have started a war.

The Houthis are giving as good as they've got, however, and what they've got packs a punch. Just how many US Navy ships have they hit so far? And have they sunk any? How many US sailors have been KIA? Just as in the Ukraine, the Pentagon isn't saying anything, but for how much longer can it sustain the myth of American invincibility?

Iranian state-owned news media Press TV reported that at least four people died and 700 were injured after a fuel tanker exploded for unknown reasons at Shahid Rajaee port in Hormozgan Province.

A separate report from the Associated Press said the explosion that rocked Iran's second-largest container port — located on the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime chokepoint — originated from containers reportedly linked to chemical ingredients linked to missile propellant.

Hamas open to multi-year Gaza truce but not to disarming

Hamas is open to a years-long truce with Israel in Gaza but is not willing to lay down its arms, an official said on Saturday, as leaders of the Palestinian Islamist militant group met mediators in Cairo for ceasefire talks.

Sources close to the talks told Reuters Hamas hoped to build support among mediators for its offer, adding the group might agree to a five to seven-year truce in return for ending the war, allowing for the rebuilding of Gaza, the freeing of Palestinians jailed by Israel and the release of all hostages.

"The idea of a truce or its duration is not rejected by us, and we are ready to discuss it within the framework of negotiations. We are open to any serious proposals to end the war," said Taher Al-Nono, the media adviser for the Hamas leadership, in the first clear signal that the group was open to a longer-term truce.

Comment: Israel reacts predictably:
Following Mossad Director David Barnea's visit to Qatar, an Israeli official told The Jerusalem Post that, at present - with emphasis on at present - he sees no chance of bridging the gaps between Israel and Hamas to reach a hostage deal.

"If the positions of Israel and Hamas remain as they are now, then the gaps are unbridgeable for reaching an agreement," the official stated.

Hamas is insisting that any deal must include a complete cessation of the war - with guarantees.

Israel's position is that it will not agree to end the war unless Hamas is removed from both military and civil governance in Gaza, and the Strip is fully demilitarized.

The Israeli official speaking to the Post added, "It's not that there's no chance for a change - reality could shift things, and that's even likely - but right now the gaps are extremely wide."

Qatar's PM comments on Hamas's position

On Sunday, Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani stated, "Hamas is willing to release all the hostages in exchange for a number of Palestinian prisoners, but under conditions that Israel is unlikely to accept."

He also criticized Israel, saying it is focused on the hostages without presenting a clear vision for ending the war.

"In this situation, the chances of a deal are low, but we're trying to find broader common ground between the two sides," the Qatari prime minister said in Doha, standing alongside Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, who later met with senior Hamas officials based in Qatar.

Meanwhile, Arabic media reported that Hamas is prepared to release all the hostages in exchange for a five-year ceasefire with international guarantees.

An Israeli official told the Post, "This is a recycled proposal that was brought up in the past - but at this time, we have not received any new offer."

The sweep included Obama crony Susan Rice

Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has formally terminated the service of every member sitting on the Department of Defense's advisory committees.

Based on the information available on the website as of Thursday, the now-defunct panels included several well-known Democrats and Bush-era Republicans.

  • Michèle Flournoy - Held major Pentagon roles under Clinton and Obama; often discussed as a potential Secretary of Defense under Hillary Clinton or Biden.
  • Colin Kahl - National Security Advisor to then-VP Biden, later Under Secretary of Defense for Policy under Biden. Key Biden ally and architect of many failed Middle East strategies during the Obama years.
  • Susan Rice - National Security Advisor under Obama; Domestic Policy Advisor under Biden. Central to Obama's foreign policy blunders and later helped craft Biden's radical domestic agenda.
  • Dana Shell Smith - Career diplomat; served as U.S. Ambassador to Qatar under Obama.
  • Eric Edelman - Undersecretary of Defense for Policy under George W. Bush; strong neoconservative background.
  • Jon Huntsman Jr. - Served under George W. Bush (Ambassador to Singapore) and Obama (Ambassador to China); briefly served under Trump (Ambassador to Russia).
