December 2025 witnessed escalating solar activity within Solar Cycle 25. Early in the month, a full-halo coronal mass ejection from an M8.1 flare on December 6 led to a strong G3 geomagnetic storm on December 9, enhancing auroral displays. Mid-month featured an X1.1 flare on December 8 — the most intense of the period — along with multiple C- and M-class flares.

Activity intensified late, with an M5.1 flare on December 27, an M4.2 on December 28, and peaking at an M7.1 on December 31, accompanied by potential Earth-grazing CMEs. Sunspot clusters and coronal hole high-speed streams contributed to minor geomagnetic disturbances throughout the period.

We can anticipate additional extreme weather, earthquakes, and increased solar activity over the next few months.

December 2025 was marked by severe flooding and landslides in Southeast Asia, resulting in over 1,500 fatalities across Sri Lanka and Indonesia, alongside notable seismic activity, including a 7.6 magnitude earthquake off Japan's east coast that prompted a tsunami warning.

Volcanic eruptions occurred at Mount Semeru in Indonesia and mud volcanoes in India and Trinidad, while unseasonal snowfalls and cold snaps affected regions from Australia to Canada. Multiple meteor fireball sightings were reported globally, and extreme weather events like atmospheric rivers and storms caused widespread disruptions in North America and Europe.

Heavy rains, floods, and landslides led to significant casualties and evacuations in multiple countries:
  • Sri Lanka: Heavy rains from December 1-5 triggered landslides and floods, killing 607 people and leaving 214 missing.
  • Sumatra, Indonesia: Flash floods and landslides from December 1-6 killed at least 908, with 410 missing, after 9.8 inches of rain in 24 hours.
  • Morocco's Safi: Flash floods on December 15 killed at least 37 people.
  • Bolivia: Flash floods on December 16 killed 20 individuals.
  • Brazil's Sao Paulo: Heavy rains on December 18 killed at least 7, with one missing, after three weeks' worth of rainfall in three hours.
Severe storms, including cyclones and atmospheric rivers, resulted in flooding and power outages:
  • Greece: Storm caused 'red alert' floods on December 4, killing two and turning streets into rivers.
  • Pacific Northwest, USA: A powerful atmospheric river on December 10 unleashed major river flooding.
  • Jeddah, Saudi Arabia: Severe floods on December 10 after 7 inches of rain in six hours.
  • Southern California, USA: Heavy rains on December 25 spawned flash flooding and mud flows, with 8 inches in nine hours.
  • Northern California, USA: Storms on December 22 caused flash flooding, killing at least one.
Volcanic and geothermal activity disrupted local areas:
  • Mount Semeru, Indonesia: Erupted on December 21, sending ash 3,900 feet high and causing flowing mud to devastate towns.
  • Yellowstone's Black Diamond Pool, USA: A muddy eruption was captured on video on December 22.
  • Mud volcano, Andaman Islands, India: Erupted after two decades on an earlier date, but ongoing impacts noted.
  • Mud volcano, Trinidad: Caused major damage on December 25.
  • Taal Volcano, Philippines: Earlier activity referenced, but no new December eruptions listed.
Seismic events and related geological incidents caused alerts and structural damage:
  • Off Japan's east coast: A 7.6 magnitude earthquake on December 8 prompted a tsunami warning.
  • Taiwan: A shallow magnitude 6.0 earthquake on December 24, followed by a 6.6 magnitude on December 27.
  • Off coast of Peru: A magnitude 6.2 earthquake on December 27.
  • Konya Closed Basin, Türkiye: Recorded 684 sinkholes on December 10 as regional risk maps were updated.
  • Sinkholes in various locations: Incidents swallowed vehicles in East El Paso, Texas (December 24), Blakely, Pennsylvania (December 27), and Turkey (December 30).
Unseasonal weather phenomena disrupted travel and daily life:
  • Australia: Snow on the first day of summer marked the coldest December 1 in nearly three decades; Tasmania saw rare summer snowfall on December 25.
  • Canada: Recorded its coldest December temperature in 50 years at -56.7°C on December 23.
  • Saudi Arabia's Trojena highlands: Snow blanketed the area on December 17 as temperatures dropped to -4°C.
  • Hokkaido, Japan: A blizzard on December 15 dumped 26.7 inches of snow in 24 hours, disrupting trains and flights.
  • California's Sierra Nevada: A Christmas Day snowstorm on December 27 dumped up to 4 feet 6 inches.
