So, I guess, any excuse will do - Louisiana has extended its lockdowns to 9/11/20 'because of Laura'. (I think then we'll see it reextended 'because it's hot.' What the fuck ever the SOBs can sell to the fools.)

It's funny, growing up on the gulf coast, that back when I was young and really only up until recently, hurricanes were just a part of life. There is a whole season for it and they just keep coming and life goes on. Every few years a whopper would come and hit some part of the the gulf coast and every 10 or 20 years a whopper would hit where I lived. And then every 30-100 years there is some catastrophic natural disaster, such as Katrina, which was mind blowing and beat the tar out Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana. Mississippi lost its entire coast, never mind New Orleans looking like it was nuked.
So I have been through my share of cat 4's and 5's and I can say that unless you are one of those people with a house on stilts on the beach, the worst thing that will happen during a whopper are downed trees and power failure for a few hours and limited flooding.
Anyway what I was going to say is that it seem like everything has gotten more hysterical in the news and even people living down there seem to be more anxious about tropical storms than they used to be - and no it is not because of Katrina. I am starting to think that News and Real Life are starting to merge into some sort of delusional LARP which is totally divorced from reality, and it plays out in every aspect of peoples lives.

adipocere It is part of the narrative supplied to the media to keep the fear levels up. Everything from the first scare of covid deaths, then flattening the curve, remember when the hospitals were overwhelmed, the inciting of racist riots, the convenient burning of property for redevelopment, of course the increase in cases, now it is the weather - all to manipulate fear. It is the path to the great reset.
Joyly You're right, but it seems that even the fear is melodramatic and insincere. At its root it seems based more in a void or lack of something; boredom, lack of personal attention, lack of community, lack of excitement and entertainment.
It is like a haunted house ride where you go and pay for a ticket to go inside a spooky building and actors in costumes scare you, and you scream and go along with it, but deep down you know that nothing bad is going to happen to you and you are doing it for fun. Of course underlying it there is real subconscious anxiety or else it wouldn't be scary or fun, but it is a childish instinctual anxiety. I can say with a high level of confidence that a Syrian war refugee who fled jihadists through a collapsed building with the bloodied limbs of children sticking out would not be interested in going to a haunted house ride and be chased by a painted zombie with an nerfed chainsaw. Now I am not saying that there aren't real problems in America, but all of this; the fake political crisis, the fake pandemic, murder hornets, polar vortexes, double hurricanes...all of this is a symptom of a society that has degenerated so far into decadence that it is self-destructing simply because it has nothing better to do.
Once people start to go hungry in America, I suspect all this bs will die down fast.

Joyly They're scared in the same way that children (who have a right to be so) are scared. Also, those kids have the right to expect our comfort. Modern spoiled-brat adults do not.
Rowan Cocoan I think the spoilt-brat adults are still children too - they have not learnt self responsibility and the fear manipulators know what they are doing. Who is to blame? Not for me to say. They deserve my comfort too.

She thinks she is "part of the story" so I am always having to hear about the next threat to her life and limb; be it armed Trump supporters raiding her home and spraying bullets or Covid-Ebola seeping through her doorjambs. She didn't use to be such a dupe, I think what happened is that as she has gotten older, she just never adapted to the new normal where 99% of media is a hysterical lie instead of just 50%. She thinks that if she just reads "a wide variety" of "serious" news with a skeptical eye, she will be informed, when in fact she is just brainwashing herself. Her ego is also really caught up in it. Like most Americans, she will never admit she is wrong or that she has been tricked.
adipocere I am sorry to hear about your Mum. You forgive her, I'm sure - and do the best that you can, which is all that we can do.

Joyly Well I do not think these people are really scared. I think that they want to be scared, but in reality they are just titillated. Secretly, they want to see an apocalypse happen to other Americans. They sense, as we all do, that something has to give and this charade of a nation cannot go on forever. I think they want this to be the big event, and it is soothing to read about this happening somewhere and they are involved only at a safe distance. Maybe part of the problem is also the size of the US and how Americans pretend to care what happens other Americans.

Rowan Cocoan Rowan that is how I feel about everyone: I need to forgive them no matter who they are.
Yesterday, the forecast was for it to get to a low cat 3 and strike as a cat 2. About two days after landfall there will be the final assessment - my vote is it will say "Although there were concerns that Laura would make landfall as a cat 4, it turned out to be a (weak?) cat2,"or such.
