OF THE
TIMES
Briefly stated, the Gell-Mann Amnesia effect is as follows. You open the newspaper to an article on some subject you know well... You read the article and see the journalist has absolutely no understanding of either the facts or the issues. Often, the article is so wrong it actually presents the story backward—reversing cause and effect...
In any case, you read with exasperation or amusement the multiple errors in a story, and then turn the page to national or international affairs, and read as if the rest of the newspaper was somehow more accurate about Palestine than the baloney you just read. You turn the page, and forget what you know.
I suppose for any Westerner, US or Europe, who reads this article carefully and with an open mind, the description of the totalitarian systems in...

Cockney rhyming slang: ' Berkshire Hunt' = 'C*nt'.
"He's a right Berk".
"He's a right Berkshire Hunt".
etc.
When these demented idiots, realise women has men in it.
Most probably wo.
The Freaks are now running the circus, and they are making a right balls of it.
Berkeley has a City Man ager. What to call that office now?
Don't these people have more important things to do?
Are hardware stores to be banned from selling "black" or "white" paint? Should they instead be called "Non-colored" and "Super-colored" paints?
Are farmers no longer to be allowed to call their sheep "rams" and "ewes?" And geese no longer to be called "geese" and "ganders?" Is the city's top bureaucrat, as ge0m0 observes, to no longer be the city "manager" but the city "peopleager?"
These people have nothing to do and should be fired. If this is the best they can do to justify the money the taxpayers pay them, it's time to get rid of the lot of them.
I suggest City Blowhole instead of city manager.
And it's funny how the ones who react in outrage and claim there are more important, urgent things to worry about seem to be spending their time and energy fighting THIS instead of those other things !
Why are Social Injustice Warriors - the right-wing version of SJW - so easily triggered? please stop being such snowflakes.
Conservatives have historically had the problem of trying to "legislate morality." Now, progressives are trying to "legislate feelings." Both are stupid, short-sighted, narrow-minded and doomed-to-fail.
Ayn Rand, from "Atlas Shrugged"
A massive hypocrit too, she collected Social Security payments from the oh so evil State against which she preached most of her life.
And you think that working and supporting a family is reason for bragging? it's your obligation. Everybody is doing the same. I am ranting and raving about gender pronouns as much as everybody else in this comment section - including you! Well, at least I didn't write an article about that or publish one.
If they are serious about non-gender terms then why don't they start at the top ... I don't want to hear any more Queen Elizabeth or Prince Charles .... the Lords and Ladies can go too
Yet again, I can't help but note the hipocrisy of the people who make a fake scandle out of a alleged "snowflakes" on the left getting "triggered" and needing "safe spaces" losing their minds over some different use of words!!! And crying that there are better and way more important matters, but chosing to dedicate their time and energy to THIS instead of those other supper urgent issues...
Can we say the same about words like mankind and manhole? No, we can't. They are not gender neutral. The comparison doesn't hold up!
Who needs to think before they reply?
Are you saying you believe that a female monarch is of lower quality than a male one and thus needs a different label?
I think mankind is a poor example - both mankind and womankind are useful terms for the collective population of those genders and we do have humankind as a practical neutral term for the population as a whole ... but if you are going to go there then surely you need to start at the top and sort out the Greek and Latin etymology that drives most of the English language - how about Homo Sapiens?
Manhole ... is it even worth discussing .. a hole in the ground where men go down ... I can hear the howls of sexism from all those female sewer workers being over-looked
Maybe you prefer the neutral French name - "la bouche d'égout" ... (The mouth to the sewer)
And you used the isolated example of "manhole" and use the fact that there are few if any female sewer workers to discredit it, but leave out in the process other examples like MANPOWER. Again, does sound disingenuous.
It's the government that is responsible for addressing those important issues - they can't do that when they are obsessing over trivia
Strangely, we did NOT see this same kind of outrage when the Donald Trump's administration banned words like "fetus", "transgender" or "diversity". No single Sott.net editor or HarshAttack2 cried about the end of civilazation, about censorship, about governments wasting time... in fact, they don't complain at all! They smile and nod and pretend to be blind It's almost as if these people don't care about "freedom of speech" or about governments "wasting time" AT ALL, but use this mask as an excuse to express their deep conservatism and how deeply bothered they feel when certain minorities start to rise to the same level of respect and conquer the same rights that you yourself have always had. That is not very STO of you. On the contray, it sounds STS. I always wondered how Laura's SOTT.net could have become an epicenter of STS feelings.
Do you know what changes in my life with the above news? NOTHING. If anything at all, it changes slightly for the better because now I see that more people are getting included and respected and that is a good thing.
There is also plenty of time for us to have a moan at the banality of these changes - they really are trivial and meaningless
Aren't there inherent problems though with allowing local levels to determine the names we use for things - whatever they want to call it, you want a manhole to be xxxxxxx whether in LA or NY
Why not just implement a logical, sweeping change - you want to avoid Man / Woman terms (e.g policeman / policewoman) so we need a new neutral prefix / suffix. I would pick something like "BU" for biological unit and then we can go down buholes and speaks to a policebu
Males also need to become manbu and females wobu so we don't have that implication of derivation
