On the bright side

At least it is all in the open now. This reeks of the symbolic and literal beginning of revolt. If it works that way it couldn't be more perfect... the romanticism of the free range cattlemen.... being forced into free speech zones! If they kill those guys it's on like donkey kong. Guess the cowboy propaganda films are backfiring.

It sounds like the same tactic that was used with native American Indians. When the opposing Indians got the upper hand in a battle, then settle for a treaty. Retreat the forces and then amass a new more powerful force to beat the unsuspecting Indians.

Treaties and words of agreements did not carry any weight at all, as the Indians were dealing with psychopaths, where it was all about winning and where the human bit of being human was missing.

It is of course also what signifies the current US foreign policy, where words and agreements mean nothing.

I don't buy it

I see we're still projecting way too much intelligence onto American authority figures.

They backed down coz they wuz scared - period!

True, the Feds pull off complex double/triple reverse psychology operations from time to time, but this wasn't one of them.

If you really wanna know how their mind games work, consider that "the source at DHS" probably said such stuff AFTER THE FACT to scare people. As in, "Well, we actually meant to back down all along, yessir we did, an' now we'll see who's hollerin' next time when we come gitya!"

It's really pathetic coming from grown adults because it's that thing kids do when you've caught them out... "Yeh? Well, I meant it all along!"

If it was the real deal, they wouldn't have TOLD anyone that that was their plan all along, thereby giving a heads-up that they're coming back.
