Savannah, Georgia - A shooting erupted at a crowded fair in Savannah and at least six people were taken to a hospital. Police said they detained several people for questioning.

None of the wounded appeared to have life-threatening injuries, said Julian Miller, spokesman for Savannah Chatham-County police. Few other details were immediately available.

A large crowd had gathered at the Coastal Empire Fair, located on Savannah's suburban south side, when witnesses heard gunshots about an hour before the fair's 11:30 p.m. closing time.

"They had a huge crowd here," Miller said. "At about 10:30 (p.m.), officers working the fair heard gunshots and found an undetermined number of victims."

While police weren't immediately saying how many people were injured, Memorial Health University Medical Center spokeswoman Dawnn Henderson said the hospital received six patients from the fairgrounds. She declined to release their identities or details of their conditions.

Sarah Smith, a deputy coroner for Georgia's Chatham County where the fairgrounds is located, said no fatalities were reported to the coroner's office from the scene.

Miller said police had detained several people for questioning about the shootings, but they were not being identified as suspects.

Police worked to clear the fairgrounds of bystanders while investigators got down to work at the crime scene.
