A strawman argument if there ever was one.
Just because earthquakes of that size are common in any area, it does not follow that increased rates of these small quakes are common. Such a distinct and profound increase of earthquakes rates of all sizes is now a global phenomenon, and implies that something is at work. And that something is very busy.
One does not have to know what is amiss to sense that something odd is going down.
