A key drug cartel figure arrested last week in Mexico acknowledged ordering about 1,500 killings, U.S. media reported on Monday.
Mexican President Felipe Calderon said in his Twitter microblog the detention of 33-year-old former police Jose Antonio Acosta Hernandez was "the biggest blow" to organized crime in Ciudad Juarez, one of the world's most dangerous cities. The city, on the border with the U.S, has witnessed more than 3,000 murders last year, most of them linked to drug cartels.
The Mexican government, which declared fighting drug crimes in the country its top priority, placed a bounty of some $1.2 million on Hernandez's head.
Hernandez is thought to be the leader of La Linea, a group of hit men and corrupt police officers who act the armed wing of the Juarez Cartel.
Among other things, Hernandez admitted organizing the 2010 car bomb blast which left four people dead, and a birthday party massacre, in which 15 teenagers were killed.
The U.S. authorities may seek his extradition for last year's attack that killed a U.S. consulate employee and two other people in Ciudad Juarez.

There is a slightly longer and better-written article on this at the Huffington Post website. One of many.
This is being played up as "the biggest blow" but this guy was basically just a thug. That he was "corrupt" implies that someone corrupted him. So, where's that guy? Still running his drug business and making war with his biggest rival, much to the terror of all those in the area who are trying to live decent lives.
This is a classic case of what the modern world is up against and how it thinks and acts about the problem.
Do you really think that we couldn't take out the real kingpins in this business if we wanted to? I don't think the will is there. Part of the elite's agenda is to create a dependency among the middle ranks of the well-to-do on dangerous drugs that are considered illegal. That means that criminal organizations have to exist to supply these drugs and that they have to use terror as their modus operandi in order to keep from being discovered. However, our government admits that it knows exactly who runs these drug businesses. So: What's the big secret?
The big secret is how these drug businesses manage to survive! Isn't it obvious that someone with mucho dolares is supplying these businesses with arms and other forms of protection? Someone with some major weight on this planet WANTS the semi-rich to be addicted to drugs which are supplied by outlaws known for their brutality and their ability to corrupt the police and other officials. To say nothing of what they are doing to our cities where they seek out disadvantaged youth to be part of their distribution system.
There is a massive story here that is not being told. I am quite sure of it. This problem deserves much more attention than it gets. It is one of the sinkholes we are shoveling money and resources into that could be used to help honest people survive.
