Foul weather is expected across the whole US. The South and West can expect rain and severe thunderstorms, and the Midwest and Northeast will get more snow and wintry weather by later tonight.

South

Severe weather will be possible across portions of the South today, including the potential for storms producing damaging wind, large hail, and tornadoes. Mississippi and Alabama will have the best chance of sever thunderstorms during the daylight hours, with the chance of severe moving into South Georgia and the Florida Panhandle during the evening and overnight hours. Farther north in the Tennessee Valley and North Georgia, heavy rain will be possible today, with the heaviest rain moving into the Carolinas overnight tonight. Icy conditions will be possible over portions of central Virginia - including Roanoke and Charlottesville - starting this evening and into tonight. By Wednesday, rain and snow will be possible in the North Carolina and Virginia mountains with some leftover rain in the Outer Banks and coastal Virginia, with some snow possible in Oklahoma and North and West Texas. Most of the South should stay dry and cold Thursday and Friday (except far South Texas and far South Florida). A chance of snow moves into the Tennessee Valley and the southern Appalachians on Saturday.

Midwest

Expect a wintry mess across the Midwest today. Various winter weather warnings (heavy snow and winter storm) stretch from Missouri to New York for today. The heaviest snow should fall over central Illinois, central Indiana, and central and northern Ohio during the day today before moving to the Appalachians tonight. Along the Ohio River, a wintry mix and some ice is possible. In Kentucky, areas of heavy rain will fall. By Wednesday, snow will be possible near the Great Lakes and in the High Plains of the Dakotas, western Nebraska, and Kansas, with colder temperatures returning. Some lake-effect snow is possible around the Great Lakes on Thursday and Friday, with an area of light snow possible across the Plains and Upper Midwest on Friday. By Saturday, snow will be possible again across much of the Mississippi and Ohio Valleys.

Northeast

A relatively quiet day is expected across the Northeast today, but wintry weather arrives late tonight in metro Washington, Baltimore, and Philadelphia. The main thrust of precipitation and wind will be on Wednesday across the Northeast as the developing low tracks up the coast, with heavy snow possible in the interior Northeast, and the possibility of a wintry mix or ice along the coast, including the Megalopolis. All of this, of course, is heavily dependent on the ultimate track of the low. By Thursday, snow and wind will be confined to Northern New England with lake-effect snows returning to the snow belts at the east end of Lake Ontario. Lake-effect snows are possible again through Saturday.

West

Much of the West will see precipitation today and tonight, with snow possible across the highest elevations as well as the High Plains from Montana to New Mexico. Rain will be possible along much of the West Coast. On Wednesday, snow will be possible across most of the Rockies, with another storm system moving ashore in the Pacific Northwest. This next system will track along the Canadian border through Friday, bringing a chance of snow to the northern Rockies on Thursday. More showers are possible in the Pacific Northwest on Friday and Saturday, with some rain in Southern California on Saturday. Temperatures will rise to above seasonal averages across much of the region by Friday and Saturday.
