Lightning bolt kills 3 and injures 9 others in Uttarakhand, India

At least three people were killed and nine others injured after being hit by lightning in Uttarkashi.

The villagers informed OSD Dhirendra Pawar about the accident, who informed the district magistrate of Uttarakhand about the casualties.

The deceased have been identified as Amar Singh (52), Lokesh (22) and Meher Singh (50), residents of Mori tehsil of Uttarkashi.

The nine injured were identified as Dinesh, Janak Singh, Jagdish, Kishan, Jitendra Singh, Chaman, Sanju, Akhilesh and Parmanand.

Lightning strikes claim 3 lives in Telangana, India

Lightning took the lives of three people of the district on Friday. The deceased were identified as Nannuri Krishna Reddy of Narsingbatla of Nalgonda mandal, Tanneru Raja of Koppolu of Gurrampodu mandal and Osman of Tummadam of Nidmnoor mandal.

Reddy and Raja were hit by lightning while taking shelter under trees, Osman was hit while working in his field. Meanwhile, the untimely rains coupled with strong gales damaged fruit orchards, especially mango and sweet lime.

The rains threw public life out of gear in several parts of Nalgonda, Suryapet and Yadadri districts. Power supply was snapped in many places. However, the showers brought respite to many who were struggling due to rising temperatures.

Lightning bolt kills 2 in Saptari, Nepal

Two persons have been killed by a bolt of lightning in Saptari district on Friday, police said.

Police identified the deceased as 25-year-old woman Rubina Chaudhary of Surunga Municipality-4 and 40-year-old man Surendra Mukhiya of Hanumannagar Kankalini Municipality-4 in the district.

Both of them died on the spot, according to police.

It has been learned that both of them were struck by a thunder bolt while working in their field.

Six people were killed in lightning in three West Bengal districts on Friday evening as a thunderstorm swept across the state's north-western part triggering rain, police said.

While three people lost their lives in Purulia district, two others were killed in Birbhum and one in North Dinajpur district.

In Purulia district's Arsha area, three people were killed and at least nine injured when they were struck by lightning.

"These people had gathered in front of a mosque for their weekly religious rituals when the storm hit. Three people were instantly killed in lightning while nine others got injured and were shifted to the nearby hospital," an officer from Arsha police station told IANS.

Lightning strikes take 5 lives in 2 separate events in Bihar, India

Five people were killed and two others injured today in separate incidents of lightning in Bihar's Katihar district, officials said.

Among the killed were three farmers.

A 62-year-old farmer and his brother in-law were killed by lightning while they were working in a maize field at Laxmipur Bundh tola, circle inspector Sadanand Mandal said.

A 30-year-old woman suffered burn injuries in another incident of lightning in the same locality, he said.

Another 52-year-old farmer was struck by lightning at Jaja village and was declared brought dead when rushed to the hospital, Kadwa police station in-charge Ajit Kumar said.

Yet another man was killed by lightning at Riwaganj village and a 14-year-old boy was struck at Azampur tola.

A 16-year-old youth was also injured at Azampur tola.

6 women die as lightning bolt hits chimney in Tamil Nadu, India

Six women workers were killed in Chengam in Tiruvannamalai district when lightning struck a chimney at a rice mill on Friday.

There was heavy downpour accompanied by thunder and lightning in Chengam and adjoining areas.

At least seven workers from Sorpanandal village were working in the mill at Dhalavai Naickanpettai in the town.

When the lightning struck, they were in the building located adjacent to the mill.

The building collapsed in the impact and the workers were caught underneath.

'Weak or non-existent' El Nino is a factor


Forecasters at NOAA's Climate Prediction Center say the Atlantic could see another above-normal hurricane season this year.

For the upcoming Atlantic hurricane season, which runs from June 1 through November 30, forecasters predict a 45 percent chance of an above-normal season, a 35 percent chance of a near-normal season, and only a 20 percent chance of a below-normal season.

"As a Florida resident, I am particularly proud of the important work NOAA does in weather forecasting and hurricane prediction," said U.S. Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross. "These forecasts are important for both public safety and business planning, and are a crucial function of the federal government."

Two children killed and six injured by lightning bolt in Odisha, India

At least two kids were killed and six others were seriously injured in a lightning strike in Daringibadi area of Odisha's Kandhamal district today.

Initially, they were rushed to the Community Health Centre (CHC) at Daringibadi after the lightning strike where doctors declared Tapaswini Behera (10) and Kiran Digal (7) dead and shifted four out of the six injured to MKCG Medical College & Hospital at Berhampur as their condition worsened.

According to reports, Tapaswini Behera, Kiran Digal, Sapna Nayak, Suneli Nayak, Blessy Baliarsingh, Manisha Baliarsingh, Asish Baliarsingh and Laxmikant Baliarsingh had gone to a nearby orchard to collect mangoes when lightning struck them.

The devastating hailstorms once again left behind a trail of destruction, leveling standing crops and destroying fruits on Wednesday evening in different areas of South Kashmir's Tral Sub division.

Local witnessed said that the hailstorm on second consecutive day leaving behind a trail of destruction in Brenpather , Panner Jagir, Bhatnoor and Karmulla areas of Tral by destroying standing crops, vegetables and fruits there.

"Our crops and fruits completely destroyed by devastating hailstorm. We have lost everything in our fields and orchards now" said a resident of Brenpather while talking to Kashmir Observer.

The victims have requested authorities to immediately assess the quantum of loss caused to the crops and fruits in the area and demanded relief from the government.

Lightning bolt claims lives of four children in Bihar, India

Four children, including three girls, were killed and as many others injured on Thursday in lightning in Bihar's Bhagalpur district.

The lightning struck the children when they were picking mangos in an orchard at Siya village, Kahalgaon Circle Officer Radhamohan Singh said.

Four children, aged between 10 years and 14 years, died on the spot, while four others who were collecting mangos with them suffered burn injuries, he said.
