Several homeowners in southern Colorado woke up Wednesday to extensive hail damage. Based on statistics from the National Weather Service (NWS), it was the strongest overnight hail storm in El Paso County in more than 20 years.

The strong storm tore through the county, with much of the impact in Fountain. Hail in the area was reported as large as 3 inches. According to NWS, El Paso County has not seen hail more than 2 inches during the overnight hours since 1995.

11 News first warned of the severe storm. After it ended, several viewers shared photos and videos of broken glass from their homes and shattered car windows. One woman showed the hail that broke through her windows in her new home, sending hail throughout her living room.

Hurricane watch: Another wave of storms stirring in the Caribbean

hurricane forecast

Hurricane forecasters are watching another blob of showers and thunderstorms in what's turning out to be a messy start to the Atlantic hurricane season.

On Monday afternoon, forecasters said a system churning off the South American coast has a 20 percent chance of forming over the next five days. It's not expected to become any better organized as it remains close to the Central American coast and the Yucatan Peninsula through the week.

But as it moves into the Gulf of Mexico toward the end of the week, conditions could become more favorable. A track forecast so far points the storm toward Mexico, away from Florida.

The system comes less than three weeks after Alberto made a rare preseason arrival as a lopsided subtropical storm when it formed the last week of May. Having another potential storm develop so soon is not unusual, hurricane center spokesman Dennis Feltgen said, even if it seems stormier than usual in Florida. Last month, the state broke a century-old record for rainfall.

Major Hurricane Bud threatens western Mexico with rainfall on areas already flooded

hurricane Bud

Major Hurricane Bud continues to strengthen and will threaten western Mexico with flooding rainfall this week.

Bud became the second major hurricane of the season in the East Pacific basin on Monday morning, less than a week since former Hurricane Aletta passed over similar areas.

Bud will track toward the north-northwest the next several days, keeping the powerful tropical system off the coast of Mexico. However, it will track close enough to bring heavy rainfall to parts of the country.

Comment: This is no good news for western Mexico. The state of Jalisco, in particular, which will be affected by Bud, has just been hit by flash floods. See here for some dramatic pictures and footage.

Unusual outburst of red sprites during storm over Europe, and cosmic ray mapping expands

Sprite lightning
storm over Europe

This weekend, a powerful mesoscale convective system (MSC) of thunderstorms over central Europe produced a furious outburst of sprites. "It was unreal," says Martin Popek of Nýdek, Czechia, a veteran photographer of the upward directed bolts. "I recorded more than 250 sprites in only 4.5 hours of observation! That's nearly as many as I typically see in the entire summer thunderstorm season."

This is a jellyfish sprite--so called because it resembles the eponymous sea creature. Jellyfish sprites are typically very large, stretching as much as 50 km between the tops of their heads to the tips of their tentacles below. "Regular jellyfish sprites are associated with very strong positive cloud-to-ground lightning strokes in the underlying convective storms," notes lightning scientist Oscar van der Velde of the Technical University of Catalonia, Spain.

However, not all of the jellyfish were regular. Some were "decapitated"--without heads. "I recorded about 20 sets of tentacles only," says Popek.

Here is one example of many:
