Edmonton auto body shops 'chaotic all day' after massive snowfall

Edmonton police say roads are faring better following the city's near-record snowfall, despite frigid overnight temperatures that left surfaces slick and icy.

The number of crashes recorded so far Thursday morning is down by half compared with Wednesday. Between 6 a.m. and 9:30 a.m., police responded to 23 crashes, including three that caused injuries, compared with 53 crashes, seven of which caused injuries, at the same time one day earlier, said spokeswoman Lisa Sobchyshyn.

Environment Canada reports that Edmonton received between 14 and 31 centimetres of snow, while St. Albert got a whopping 35 cm.

With more than 200 crashes recorded between 6 a.m. and 4 p.m. Wednesday, auto body shops around the city saw a major increase in customers.

Twister or tornado? Rotating funnel spout seen in Guernsey

Some islanders frantically searched for their cameras after a funnel cloud was seen to the west of Guernsey yesterday.

Guernsey Airport senior meteorological officer Martin Crozier said the sighting had been recorded and reported to air traffic control at 8.20am.

'What we mean by funnel cloud, is a rotating cloud that descends from the normal cloud but doesn't necessarily touch the surface,' he said.

'If it touches the sea we call it a waterspout and if it touches land, it's a tornado and can do a lot of damage, but that's quite unusual.'

Funnel clouds are reported in or near Guernsey on average between three and six time each year.

Even before Winter Storm Athena can finish pulling away from the Northeast, we have another significant winter storm system to deal with in the western half of the country: Winter Storm Brutus. This time, not only will there be a wind-snow combo on the cold side of the system, but there will be a warm sector with severe weather potential - eventually.

But first things first.

Wintry Side: Snow, Wind, Blizzard?

With strong low pressure developing over the northern Rockies and a strong high pressure zone to the north over western Canada, the stage is set for a wind-driven snow.

That snow will develop over Montana and central Idaho on Thursday. There will also be snow farther west over the Oregon Cascades and the northern Sierra Nevada in California.

A blizzard swept through northeastern China on Nov. 4, shutting down transportation in Beijing just before the opening of the 18th Party Congress. The unexpectedly early snow storm was commented on heavily, with Internet users drawing a connection between the inclement weather and the Chinese Communist Party's upcoming political meeting.

In the early morning on Nov. 4, Beijing's Weather Bureau issued their most severe weather warning, a red alert, for the western and northern parts of the city and a second most severe warning, an orange alert, for the entire city, reported the state-run China Daily.

Up to 40,000 New Yorkers may need to be relocated as the city prepares for freezing temperatures and more rain and wind from a 'nor'easter' storm. It is expected to hit New York and New Jersey with gusts of up to 55mph by Wednesday. The strongest winds are forecast for Long Island, with 40mph more likely for New York City. There is also the chance of more beach erosion, coastal flooding and trees weakened by Superstorm Sandy being felled.

Up to four inches of rain is expected along with snowfall in more inland mountainous areas and a tidal storm surge of up to 5ft is possible, forecasters say. New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg said tens of thousands of people were in need of shelter, including 20,000 in public housing. Almost 2million people still have no power as cold weather sets in - a week after Sandy wreaked havoc on the East Coast, killing at least 113 in the US.

Hundreds of thousands of commuters today faced tricky journeys into the city as public transport remained patchy. Rail service was reduced and the subway was at 80 per cent of its normal service. Most schools were due to reopen today, but some lacked power and others were being used as shelters.

    Blizzards swirled across the North East and snow blanketed parts of the West Country yesterday.

    A light scattering of snow was reported in Gloucestershire, an inch fell in Dorset, and up to six inches fell in Somerset in Bath, Frome, Midsomer Norton and the Mendip Hills, after temperatures plummeted on Saturday night.

    Beijing authorities released a citywide orange alert and regional red alert concerning blizzards early on Sunday morning as a cold spell swept across northern China.

    China has a four-tier color-coded snow warning system: red, orange, yellow and blue, red being the most serious.

    By 10 a.m. on Sunday, the capital had received an average daily precipitation of over 58 mm, a post-1951 record for the city during China's Nov.-March winter period, according to the Beijing Meteorological Center.

    In the Fenghuangling region of Haidian District, the snowfall has lasted for over 40 hours and brought the maximal precipitation to 96 mm.

    "With a complicated distribution of precipitation, this process is bringing greatly different effects to citizens living in various regions of such a a large city," said Sun Jisong, the center's chief forecaster.

    Long after it has crossed the coast, cyclone Nilam continues to make its impact felt as torrential rainfall under its influence threatens to inundate outlying areas of two cities - Vijayawada and Eluru - in Andhra Pradesh.

    Vijayawada received 17 cm of rain since Friday evening, constituting nearly 20 per cent of its annual rainfall. This has forced the authorities to suspend train and bus services.

    Flood waters entered Vidhyadharapuram, HB Colony and Kabela in Vijayawada. Although the rain had stopped, water did not recede as Budameru, a stream, was discharging 8,000 cusecs of water. Drains in Vijayawada that empty into Budameru were blocked due to silting. Municipal Commissioner G. Bhaskar said that many areas in One Town were inundated as garbage had blocked the drains.

    All the 70 gates of Prakasam Barrage across the Krishna were lifted and 49,000 cusecs of water was being discharged in the morning. The flow, however, came down to 29,000 cusecs by noon.

    Powerful nor'easter winter storm bears down on US East Coast

    The East Coast is still reeling from the devastation brought on by Superstorm Sandy. But as the mass clear-up begins, forecasters are already warning of a powerful new nor'easter storm front coming in from the Atlantic, bringing 45mph gusts of wind mixed with snow and rain.

    The beleaguered coast line is expected to face the storm from Tuesday to Thursday - potentially casting a shadow over Election Day. At least New York City and the surrounding area may escape a beating, as forecasters expect most of the severe weather will hit northern New England - meaning it should land hundreds of miles north from where Sandy reached the continent.
