Giant sinkhole shuts down Diagonal Road in Streetsboro, Ohio

Image
© Bob Gaetjens/Gateway News A 12-foot wide sinkhole has closed Diagonal Road between S.R. 14 in Streetsboro and Overlook Drive in Twin Lakes for four to six weeks. The hole was the result of a collapsed storm sewer line. On Friday, city employees worked to support an exposed water line in the sinkhole.
A portion of Diagonal Road between S.R. 14 in Streetsboro and Overlook Drive in Twin Lakes could remain closed four to six weeks because of a sinkhole.

The road was closed at about 7:30 p.m. on Thursday.

The sinkhole is on Diagonal Road between Pleasant Valley Road and Lake Royale Boulevard. Road closed signs are posted at S.R. 14 and Overlook Drive in Twin Lakes.

By about noon on Friday, the hole, which started as a 6- to 7-foot wide sinkhole, had eroded into a 12-foot wide chasm, according to Streetsboro Service Department Director Bill Miller. Portions of the shoulder of the road began falling into the hole, as well.

"Due to the questionable safe passage of motor vehicle traffic, the decision was immediately made to close the road to traffic," Mayor Glenn Broska wrote in a statement. "Barricades were erected as soon as possible and will remain in place until the culvert is repaired."

Miller encouraged traffic to use S.R. 14 and S.R. 43 as a detour.

Sinkhole moves closer to Gulfport, Mississippi homes as others appear nearby

Julie Dean says she is getting frustrated with the City of Gulfport in trying to get a sink hole repaired in her backyard. The hole is deep, and Dean says the sink hole swallowed her six foot gate.

"This past Friday, after the heavy rain, the hole opened up a lot larger than it has ever been before, and now it's feet from my home. I contacted the drainage department and the Mayor's office Friday when it happened," said Dean." No one came by, no one called. Monday came; I contacted the drainage department and the Mayor's office. No one came by, no one called. Finally yesterday, Tuesday April 1, someone came and put up a very large fence around our sink hole that is about to swallow two homes."

You can see that other sink holes have popped up in the neighborhood. Across the street from Dean's home there's a smaller sink hole. Next door to that, another sink hole and two more in the front yard of Jason Geddings home. He says the city filled one hole a few months ago, but two more popped up.

Large sinkhole destroys road in Licking County, Ohio

Image

A portion of a central Ohio road will remain closed for the foreseeable future because of a large sinkhole that opened late Thursday night.

The 20 ft.-30 ft. sinkhole destroyed a chunk of S. York Road between Morse and Wesleyan Church Road near Pataskala.

A representative from the Licking County Engineer's Office began examining the damage at approximately 7 a.m. Friday, when heavy rain finally subsided after falling consistently in the area since Thursday morning.

Officials believe that rainfall, combined with wear and tear caused from winter weather as well as the road's position above a creek, likely caused the collapse.

A timetable for the repair of the road has not been established.

The hole is expanding "all the time" Mr Tester said
A sink hole has opened up next to a bed and breakfast in north Staffordshire.

Phil Tester, owner of The Laurels, in Oakamoor, said the chasm appeared on Thursday morning and now stood at more than three metres (10 ft) wide and is expanding "all the time".

Mr Tester said experts were on site to try and find out what caused the hole to appear.

The hole followed drilling work at the property this week to check damage caused by a nearby landslide last year.

Mr Tester said: "It's been an incredibly stressful time, there have been a few tears.

"It's not just our business, it's our home and [wife] Helen's parents' home.

"We were all in guest bedrooms last night, in rooms furthest from the hole. But, as you can imagine, we didn't sleep very well."

Comment: This comes a few days after 'Road in Staffordshire, England is mysteriously 'bleeding' red'.

Another vehicle has fallen victim to a Toledo sinkhole, becoming trapped at the intersection of Adams and 15th Streets in the city's downtown Wednesday afternoon.

A witness estimated the sinkhole was about ten feet deep and two feet wide.

The minivan involved needed to be towed out of the crater after its right front wheel sank into the hole. When the van was pulled out of the hole around 5 p.m., it was clear that vehicle had been damaged.

Around 7 p.m., Toledo City crews remained on the scene in an effort to secure the area around the hole.

Crews planned to turn off the water that could be seen running under the roadway.

Officials did not know if the shut off would impact nearby businesses or homes.

This is one of several large sinkholes that have opened up in the Toledo area this year.

Firefighter George Ryan examines the sinkhole at Brian Road and Boston Road.

Heavy rains were causing flooding and sinkholes in many parts of Massachusetts Sunday.

Flooding prompted local and state police to close a number of roads and highways Sunday morning. On parts of Memorial Drive near the Longfellow Bridge, police were warning drivers to be aware of large puddles of water.

South of Boston, Mass. State Police reported that amps from Route 195 east and westbound were closed to Route 18 due to flooding. Route 18 itself had flooded in New Bedford, and police closed it between Route195 and Route 6, reopening the southbound side at around 12:30 p.m.

In Freetown, the ramp from Chase Road to Route 140 in was closed as well because of flooding.

Firefighters rescue dog trapped in sinkhole, Frederick, Maryland

© NBCCrossroads Emergency Vet Clinic in Fredrick, Maryland was the last place Susanne Geary expected to find herself with her 14-year-old Lhasa Apso, Samantha, Sunday afternoon.

Firefighters in Frederick, Md., successfully rescued an elderly blind and deaf dog who got trapped inside a large sinkhole Sunday.

Officials were called to Old Farm Drive and Wainwright Court Sunday morning after a homeowner reported that the dog had fallen into the hole that opened overnight. Officials blew warm air into the hole during the rescue effort in order to protect the dog, a 14-year-old Lhasa Apso, from hypothermia.

Reporter Abby Theodros of WHAG-TV in Hagerstown reported the sinkhole is shaped "like a hockey stick," which made the rescue even more difficult.

Officials were eventually able to get a rope around the dog and pull her up out of the hole. Frederick police say the sinkhole was about three feet wide and 12 feet deep. The city says it did not directly affect houses or the road and that there is no threat to residents.

The sinkhole was caused by the rainy weather, authorities said.

WHAG posted this photo of the rescue on its Facebook page.

Giant sinkhole appears at intersection in Detroit, Michigan

At the intersection of Monterey and Linwood

A giant sinkhole has opened up on Detroit's west side.

The sinkhole is at the intersection of Monterey Street and Linwood, near Elmhurst Street.

Crews have blocked off the intersection and have begun evaluating the damages. The sinkhole is approximately 20 feet wide and 30 feet deep.

The concrete gave way as a contractor from the Water and Sewerage Department was inspecting a dip in the road with a small camera. No one was injured.

Workers tell FOX 2's Randy Wimbley a collapsed sewer riser caused the sinkhole. It eroded the soil underground which caused an 8-inch water line to give way.

Repairs are expected to take weeks.

If a 9-foot sewer line about 38 feet underground is in disrepair because of the sinkhole, that will have to be fixed in addition to the sewer riser and the water line, which will take more time.

Crews tell Wimbley a few cracks stretch out pretty far from the collapse so the sinkhole has some potential to get larger. They are monitoring the situation.

30 Foot deep sinkhole appears in front yard, Wahiawa, Hawaii

A sinkhole opened up on a property on Dole Road in Wahiawa Thursday afternoon.

Police were called, and they covered it up and blocked it off.

The resident says this is not the first time this has happened on the property.

Amateur video showed the hole before it was covered.

The curious gathered around it but with the ground saturated by a recent downpour, no one wanted to stand on the edge for too long.

Sasha Terry came home after a doctor's appointment, and found the scene in her front yard.

At first, it was just a couple of feet deep.

Sinkhole opens up on busy Northwood road, London

A sinkhole opened in Pinner Road, Northwood, this morning (Friday) and has got the experts perplexed.

Police were called to Pinner Road in Northwood at at 9.50am this morning after a sinkhole opened up.

There are no reported injuries but it is not yet clear whether any vehicles were affected.

Hillingdon Council has been made aware and the area has been cordoned off and the road and surrounding ones closed.

Matt Williams, who was at the scene, said road diversions are going down Addison Way towards Northwood. As of 12.15pm there was a back log of traffic building up down Joel Street.

It has been a freaky 12 hours for Northwood - yesterday a crane crashed in to a property in Murray Road.

Update: Theories about the sinkhole being caused by a collapsed drain are ruled out. Road to reopen at 6pm.
