Flood destroys vast cropland in Bangladesh

floods
Farmers bore the brunt of the first spell of monsoon floods that continued to inundate fresh areas for the fourth consecutive day until Tuesday.

Parts of Rajbari and Tangail districts went under water since Monday night as the River Padma and the tributaries of the River Jamuna crossed their danger marks at three new places.

The five northern districts that emerged as worst hit by the floods already had crops on 13,642 hectares almost completely destroyed, reported New Age correspondent in Lalmonirhat.

A comprehensive picture of the damages caused by the floods to the agriculture sector would take a while to come by as new areas were affected with the deluge moving downstream.

More Chinese regions brace for floods as storms shift east
Torrential rain is set to hit China's eastern coastal regions this week after overwhelming large parts of the southwest, inundating villages and tourist spots and displacing more than 700,000 people, state weather forecasters said on Monday.

Nearly 14 million people in 26 different provinces had been affected by storms and floods by Friday, with 744,000 evacuated, the China Daily reported, citing the Ministry for Emergency Management. The ministry said 78 people have been confirmed dead or missing, with direct economic losses at 27.8 billion yuan ($3.93 billion).

Much of the damage has hit southwestern regions like Guangxi and Sichuan, and the municipality of Chongqing on the upper reaches of the Yangtze river last week experienced its worst floods since 1940.

"Two people have died in separate incidents of drowning in the past 24 hours and more than one million people have been affected, with the flood situation turning critical by the hour," a state government flood bulletin said.

A severe storm ripped through southwestern Manitoba Sunday evening, causing flooding and damage in and around the Brandon area.

Around 4 p.m. a tornado warning was issued in the Minnedosa area, however the warning ended shortly after.

Environment and Climate Change Canada said it's too early to say whether a tornado touched down in the area. Meteorologist Sara Hoffman told CTV News Environment Canada received reports of damage near Rapid City.

Hoffman said conditions were favourable for producing a tornado, but couldn't say yet whether one had occurred. She said Environment Canada will have to comb through data and damage in order to make that determination.
