Environmental disasters across globe in November 2020

Seasonal Deyr rains, which hit Somalia between October and December, acutely impact the lives of roughly 73,000 people

November saw a host of global environmental disasters, including floods in Mexico and typhoon gales in the Philippines, as well as forest fires in Algeria and storms in Central America and Somalia.

Here is a timeline compiled by Anadolu Agency.

Nov. 2:

- At least 17 people die and tens of thousands of others evacuated to safer areas due to the ongoing typhoon in the Philippines, according to state media.

Nov. 4:

- A miniature tsunami hits coastal areas in Turkey after being triggered by an earthquake in the Aegean Sea, according to the head of Bogazici University's Kandilli Earthquake Research Institute.

Two people died in a landslide in Antioquia Department, Colombia on 12 December.

According to the Administrative Department of Risk Management of Antioquia (DAGRAN), the landslide occurred along the road between Bogota and Medellin, near the village of El Silencio in San Luis Municipality.

Six homes were destroyed in the landslide, leaving 2 dead and 6 injured. DAGRAN evacuated around 30 people.

Flood warnings and rescues in 2 states of Australia after 27.5 inches of rain in 72 hours

A low-pressure trough off the coast of south east Australia caused a wild weekend of weather for south east Queensland and northern New South Wales with torrential rain, damaging winds, abnormally high tides and dangerous surf.

Flood warnings are in place in southern Queensland and northern New South Wales (NSW) after heavy rainfall. In a 72 hour period to 14 December, 738 mm of rain fell in Upper Springbrook in Queensland, including 323mm in 6 hours overnight, 12 to 13 December. In NSW the highest rainfall totals were seen in Burringar with 424 mm in 72 hours.

NSW State Emergency Service (NSW SES) said areas of Northern Rivers and parts of Mid North Coast and Northern Tablelands Districts were among the worst affected. NSW SES said they had received 900 calls for assistance and carried out 4 flood rescue operations.

At least 2 people are missing after flash floods in Izmir Province, western Turkey.

Flooding struck between 13 and 14 December 2020. A stream overflowed, flooding roads in Dereköy in Menderes district, sweeping away a vehicle carrying 5 people. Three managed to survive, while 2 others are thought to be still missing. Search and rescue operations are ongoing.

Turkish State Meteorological Service reported 42.1mm of rain in the town of Menderes in 24 hours to 14 December. In Karabağlar, situated about 10 km to the north, 77.3 mm of rain fell during the same period. Elsewhere in the province, 147mm of rain fell in Urla and 103.4mm in Karaburun. Heavy rain was also reported in parts of Muğla and Antalya provinces during the same period.

Venice's St Mark's Square was under water on Tuesday after a newly installed system of mobile artificial dams failed to activate. Residents -- long accustomed to perennial "acqua alta" or high water events -- pulled on their rubber boots once more to deal with flooding that reached a high of 1.37 metres (4.5 feet) above sea level in the afternoon.

(Translated from Brazilian Portuguese): A heavy rain that fell early tonight (8) in Uberlândia (MG), located in the Triângulo Mineiro, left the city with several flooding points. The Santa Monica neighborhood and the center were the most affected places. Drivers had their cars stopped because of flooding on public roads and some vehicles were driven by the current. Teams from the Civil Defense, the Fire Department and the Military Police (PM) were called in to respond to the occurrences.

Earlier, the Civil Defense issued an alert and confirmed that the city is on yellow alert due to the forecast of heavy rains. In case of emergency situations, residents should call the Fire Department (193), PM (190) or the agency itself (199). On Saturday (5), the city was also hit by a thunderstorm.

Floods after heavy rainfall leave 18 dead in Democratic Republic of Congo

Heavy rainfall in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) in early December 2020 caused deadly flooding in the city of Mbanza-Ngungu in Kongo Central Province in the western part of the country.

Radio Okapi reported 13 people died after torrential rain and strong winds overnight, 01 to 02 December, 2020. Four people were injured and several houses were destroyed or severely damaged. Five further fatalities were reported from 02 to 03 December after flooding in other areas of the city.

Deadly flooding affected eastern parts of the country in late November in South and North Kivu provinces.

More recently, heavy rainfall was reported in the capital, Kinshasa, with 69mm of rain falling in 24 hours to 07 December 2020.

Wide areas of Italy have seen severe weather including strong winds, heavy snow and rain since 04 December. Evacuations have been carried out after flooding in Emilia-Romagna and Veneto Regions. Media report at least 2 weather-related fatalities.

As of 06 December, Italy's Ministry of the Interior reported that the regions of Veneto, Friuli Venezia Giulia, Emilia-Romagna, Piemonte, Lombardy and Tuscany were all severely affected.

Italy's fire service, Vigili del Fuoco, said it had carried out 2,500 interventions between 05 and 07 December, including 1,000 in Veneto, 300 in Emilia-Romagna, 150 in Friuli Venezia Giulia. As many as 245 people were rescued either by boat or helicopter on 06 December. Fatalities have been reported as a result of severe weather in Lombardy and the southern region of Basilicata.
