Man killed in attack by two American bully XL dogs inside his home in Rotterdam, Netherlands

PIT BULL ATTACK
A man died in Rotterdam after being mauled by two dogs inside his home, police said Sunday. Officers shot at one of the animals to reach the victim, but attempts to resuscitate him failed.

Both dogs, identified as American bully XLs, were later put down in the garden, according to police. The animals attacked the man when he tried to separate them during a fight, his daughter told AD.

"They were wild, fighting dogs he tried to pull apart," she said. The dogs were about nine months old. One belonged to the man himself, while the other was his granddaughter's, she added.

The daughter described her father as widely loved in his community. "He was a very kind father. A man who got along with everyone. When my mother passed away, the entire street looked after him. That says a lot about how cherished he was here."

The police said in a statement on X that they were unable to provide details beyond what was shared late Saturday night and do not expect to release additional information soon.

The American bully XL breed was placed on the Netherlands' official list of high-risk dogs in 2017. In recent years, the United Kingdom introduced strict rules for ownership and breeding of the dogs following several fatal biting incidents.

Beekeepers highlight record number of bee colony losses in Texas - 62% loss

mmmmm
Beekeepers report losses of over 60 percent of their colonies in Texas, devastating the population.

"Big difference for this year versus years past is, it's just so widespread. You know, I have always seen isolated events where one beekeeper may lose high colonies, but it just seems like more and more," Garett Slater, a honey bee specialist with Texas A&M AgriLife

"We lost 24 hives in a 10 day period," said Daniel Lennon, chief apiarist with Honey Badger Trading Co.

Garett Slater with Texas A&M AgriLife says that these numbers have steadily increased over the last 20 years, going from 40 to 50 percent, now up to 62 percent.

If the number of colonies that die continue to rise, Slater says the impact could be big.

Missing New Orleans boy died from blunt force trauma from alligator, authorities say

Bryan Vasquez
Bryan Vasquez
A nonverbal New Orleans boy who disappeared earlier this month was found dead Tuesday and appears to have died in part from an alligator attack, officials said.

New Orleans Police Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick said Wednesday that Bryan Vasquez, 12, drowned after suffering blunt force trauma from an alligator.

His body was found in a lagoon in the city's Michoud neighborhood, Kirkpatrick said.

An investigation into the boy's death, which Kirkpatrick said is considered "unclassified," is ongoing.

Vasquez's Aug. 14 disappearance prompted a frantic search and scrutiny on the police department after revelations that authorities did not respond to a 911 call about the boy for five hours.

Kirkpatrick said Tuesday that it wasn't clear what caused the delay, but she said she immediately requested an internal affairs investigation.

Archaeologists excavating the Uğurlu-Zeytinlik Mound on Türkiye's westernmost island in the Aegean Sea, Gökçeada (Imbros), have uncovered something never before seen in Aegean prehistory: the first architectural remains belonging to the earliest farming communities of the Aegean Islands.

The discovery, dated to around 8,800 years ago, places Uğurlu alongside Knossos on Crete as the only settlements in the Aegean Islands belonging to the first agricultural societies.

"The First Time We Have Encountered Such Architecture"

Speaking about the groundbreaking find, excavation director Prof. Dr. Burçin Erdoğu explained:

"This type of architecture has been encountered for the first time in the Aegean Islands, which makes it extremely valuable for us. We have identified a building style that is round in plan, with sunken floors, constructed using what we call the wattle-and-daub technique. The Uğurlu settlement, together with Knossos on the island of Crete, is the only settlement across the Aegean Islands belonging to the earliest farming communities. In this context, I can say that we have uncovered the architecture of the earliest farming communities in the Aegean Islands for the very first time."

This statement underscores the discovery's significance — not just for Türkiye, but for the history of the entire Aegean basin.

Have you ever seen a shark like this?

This amazing bright orange shark is so far the only one of its kind, found during a fishing trip near Tortuguero National Park in Costa Rica.

Its unusual colour is caused by something called xanthism, a condition which researchers say is extremely rare in fishes like sharks.

Publishing the pictures in the Marine Biology journal, scientists say that this is the first ever time that a shark of this colour has been found.

Deer, rabbits and squirrels with horrifying flesh bubbles spotted in multiple US states

Deer warts are spread by a virus which is transmitted through mosquito and tick bites
Deer warts are spread by a virus which is transmitted through mosquito and tick bites
Deer across the US have been spotted with tumor-like growths hanging off their bodies, joining rabbits and squirrels as animals showing signs of widespread disease.

From the Northeast to the Pacific Northwest, pictures on social media continue to document cases of strange bubbles growing all over local deer, from their faces to their legs.

Over the last two months, people have photographed deformed deer in New York, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.

Wildlife officials have already identified the condition as deer cutaneous fibroma, better known as deer warts.

The condition is due to a virus transmitted between deer in all parts of the US, and experts have warned that it's spreading this summer.

The virus mainly spreads through disease-carrying insects like mosquitoes and ticks, which pass on the blood of infected deer to healthy animals nearby.

Woman seriously injured after bear attack in Kenai, Alaska

MMMMM
Wildlife officials asked residents in a Kenai neighborhood to be on high alert following a bear attack early Tuesday morning.

According to Alaska Wildlife Trooper David Lorring, the 36-year-old woman was seriously injured when she went for a jog near her home on Chinook Drive, a neighborhood near the Pillars Boat Launch on the Kenai River, sometime between 5 and 5:30 a.m.

"She made it probably 50 yards from her house," Lorring said. "The bear came out of another property, it looks like it attacked her ... and dragged her approximately 100 yards down the road onto this guy's property."

Lorring said the man was a neighbor who had awakened to noises before daylight, which he assumed were coming from a bear. He went outside to inspect once it was light out, about a half hour later.
