Hawaii: 34 earthquakes rattle world's largest active volcano, raising fears of eruption

Mauna Loa, the world's largest active volcano, covering half of the Big Island of Hawaii, was ratted by 34 small earthquakes on Sunday.

Though only registering small magnitudes, scientists have warned citizens that the mounting seismic activity could signal that an eruption may be possible in the near future.

There have been 155 earthquakes greater than 1.5 on the Richter scale in the past seven days, and 740 in the past month, including a 4.3 on 3 April.

Sunday's largest tremor was a 3.2 magnitude quake that struck Pahala, south of the summit of Mauna Loa at 8.08pm local time. A 3.0 tremor also struck in the afternoon.

In March, the US Geological Survey said that as the volcano continues to awaken from its slumber, it would be a good time for people to revisit their personal emergency plans in the event of an eruption.

An intermediate magnitude 6.0 earthquake was reported early afternoon near Blitar, East Java, Indonesia.

According to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the quake hit on Saturday 10 April 2021 at 2:00 pm local time at an intermediate depth of 87 km.

The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.

Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.9.

8 Dead, Dozens Hurt as Indonesia Quake Shakes East Java

A strong earthquake on Indonesia's main island of Java killed eight people, including a woman whose motorcycle was hit by falling rocks, and damaged more than 1,300 buildings, officials said Sunday. It did not trigger a tsunami.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the magnitude 6.0 quake struck off the island's southern coast at 2 p.m. Saturday. It was centered 45 kilometers south of Sumberpucung town of Malang District in East Java province, at a depth of 82 kilometers.

Rahmat Triyono, the head of Indonesia's earthquake and tsunami center, said the undersea tremblor did not have the potential to cause a tsunami. Still, he urged people to stay away from slopes of soil or rocks that have the potential for landslides.

This was the second deadly disaster to hit Indonesia this week, after Tropical Cyclone Seroja caused a severe downpour Sunday that killed at least 174 people and left 48 still missing in East Nusa Tenggara province. Some victims were buried in either mudslides or solidified lava from a volcanic eruption in November, while others were swept away by flash floods. Thousands of homes with damaged.

Saturday's quake caused falling rocks to kill a woman on a motorcycle and badly injured her husband in East Java's Lumajang district, said Raditya Jati, spokesperson for the National Disaster Mitigation Agency.

He said about 1,189 homes and 150 public facilities, including schools, hospitals and government offices, were damaged. Rescuers retrieved four bodies from the rubble in Lumajang's Kali Uling village. Three people were also confirmed killed by the quake in Malang district.

Television reports showed people running in panic from malls and buildings in several cities in East Java province.


Indonesia, a vast archipelago of 270 million people, is frequently struck by earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and tsunamis because of its location on the "Ring of Fire," an arc of volcanoes and fault lines in the Pacific Basin.

In January, a magnitude 6.2 earthquake killed at least 105 people and injured nearly 6,500, while more than 92,000 were displaced, after striking Mamuju and Majene districts in West Sulawesi province.

A 4.0-magnitude earthquake rattled Los Angeles early Monday morning centered in Lennox, a city two miles East of Los Angeles International Airport.

The 4.0 tumbler struck at 4:45 a.m. PT, though the robotic LA Quakebot earlier registered a 3.0-magnitude earthquake in the area at 4:18 a.m. and a 2.5-magnitude earthquake at 4:19 a.m. There have been no reports of major damage or injuries. LAX continues to operate as normal.

An earthquake of magnitude 6.0 on the Richter scale jolted Gisborne city of New Zeland on Monday, the United States Geological Survey said.

The epicentre, with a depth of 10.0 km, was initially determined to be at 37.5205 degrees south latitude and 179.6745 degrees east longitude.

No casualties have been reported yet. On March 4, a powerful earthquake of magnitude 6.9 on the Richter Scale jolted Gisborne, New Zealand.

In 2011, a magnitude 6.3 quake hit the city of Christchurch, killing 185 people and destroying much of its downtown.

The earthquake was recorded at about 1:16 UTC. The epicentre of the tremor was located east of the islands. The focus lay at a depth of 10 kilometres.

A 6.6-magnitude earthquake has struck east of the South Sandwich Islands in the South Atlantic Ocean, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
There have been no reports of injuries or damage as a result of the earthquake, as no people live on the South Sandwich Islands. No tsunami alert has been declared, the US National Tsunami Warning Centre stated.
The earthquake's epicentre was more than 1,810 kilometres from King Edward Point, a research station on South Georgia Island and is the capital of the British Overseas Territory of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands, according to the Indian National Centre for Seismology.

AN earthquake measuring 6.6 in magnitude has been recorded north-east of New Zealand, within the so-called Ring of Fire, the USGS has reported.

The tremor is the latest in a a series of 34 in the region in the last day, the USGS has said. It struck at a depth of 6.2 miles. There is currently no tsunami alert in force - but a series of quakes did trigger one earlier this month.

Seismic activity is commonplace in the region, located within the so-called Ring of Fire which stretches around the Pacific Basin.

On Monday, the American Geophysical Union tweeted: "An M8.1 #earthquake off the coast of #NewZealand triggered an estimated 300 #landslides on #RaoulIsland, the largest of the #Kermadec Islands.
