US: Airlines to investigate spate of windshield cracks at DIA

Three aircraft leaving Denver International Airport this afternoon were forced to return with cracked windshields, according to a DIA spokesman.

Two United Express and one Delta aircraft taking off from DIA around 2 p.m. all experienced the problem and returned shortly after takeoff, said DIA Spokesman Jeff Green.

Green said it was unknown what caused the cracks, and that the airlines would investigate.

Connecticut, US: Newtown police see mysterious low-flying aircraft

Local police saw five mysterious low-flying aircraft in the sky last Saturday and said Wednesday "we have no idea" what they were.

They have not classified the aircraft as UFOs, they said.

After receiving a phone call from a resident about 8 p.m. Saturday, police said they sent two officers to Route 34 and Toddy Hill Road, where the officers saw five aircraft.

First Selectman Pat Llodra said Wednesday she had heard nothing about the incident. "They didn't let us know."

Linda Cole, who lives on Toddy Hill Lane, wished she had been part of the excitement.

Spontaneous Human Combustion? 15-year-old girl dies of mystery burns

A 15-year-old girl died after suffering burn injuries under mysterious circumstances at Howrah's Bantra on Tuesday. Police have started a probe.

Police said that Binita Puri, a Class IX student and resident of Hooghly's Pandua, was visiting her maternal uncle Kalachand Puri's house at Brindavan Mullick Lane at Bantra.

Kalachand lives on the ground floor of a highrise building. His wife Seema Puri was cooking when Binita suddenly shouted from inside the toilet. When everybody rushed in, she was found aflame. To save Binita, her aunt Seema rushed to her and tried to douse the fire by wrapping a cloth around her. Seema, too, sustained serious burns. Both were rushed to Howrah district hospital, where Binita was declared dead. Kalachand, who runs a cable business, was not at home then.

It was Dec 14th - a typical, cold Michigan night. I came outside to meet a family member who was dropping off a down payment for a t-shirt order. (I do costume designs.)

While I stood outside waiting for them to pull up I noticed a really fast object to my right darting by in the sky. I thought it was odd - something like a shooting star, etc. Not sure because it shoot by so fast. So it caught my attention and made me extremely alert, and I immediately began to comb the night sky in search for anything strange, or sudden movements, etc.

[There weren't] a lot of stars visible that night, but a few none-the-less. So as I was doing my observation another object caught my eye. It appeared to be a bright star; much more brighter then anything else in the night sky, besides the moon. [It was] much smaller than the moon.

Comment: We think that this optical 'phenomenon' is yet another star distorted by the used video camera system. It is too simplified to think that when one is zooming in to a star, it will look steady. Instead, tiny hand movements become extremely magnified, the star light flickers and changes colors due to the chromatic aberration caused by the atmosphere. In each video frame, all of this is integrated/summed up over time by the camera electronics. Then it is easy to think that the optical "phenomenon" is something extraordinary.

We don't know for certain that this is the the case in this video, but it is useful to keep in mind when watching any UFO videos on the web, and trying to discern the real phenomenon from the noise.

UK: Saffron Walden's 'earthquake' mystery

Dozens of people called emergency services reporting two large explosions and shaking in Saffron Walden - prompting suggestions the town could have been hit by an earthquake.

Firefighters received several calls just before 8pm last night.

It was previously thought the incident was caused by a fault at an electricity sub-station, but the authorities have now said this was not the case and the explosions are a mystery.

Caroline Mifsud, 37, from Saffron Walden, said: "My son heard an explosion and felt a shake and about ten minutes later there were police and fire engines everywhere. Everyone is talking about it on Facebook."

Police from Saffron Walden, Dunmow and Stansted and firefighters investigated the loud bangs and shaking, which had been reported by residents across the town centre and in villages further afield including Thaxted, Ashdon and Newport.

Paul Curtis, station officer in charge at Saffron Walden Fires Station, said: "It's a bit of a mystery.

"The power companies said there have been no reports of power loss and we investigated and could not find anything.

"We also checked with the military to see if they had conducted any training exercises."

Oregon Couple Reports Two Hovering Lights

An Oregon couple watched and videotaped a bright light hovering 400 yards from their home while a second object "rose out of the trees" and hovered under the first object on January 9, 2011, according to testimony from the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) witness reporting database.

The wife woke at 5:30 a.m. and noticed the first object.

"At first I thought it was a very bright star, but soon after waking up fully, I saw that it wasn't a star," she stated.

Then the wife noticed a second object moving up from the ground level.

"After a few minutes another object rose out of the trees and it was similar to the first object," she stated. "I was extremely excited and scared and I woke up my husband at that point. We both were looking at the object and I went to find my video camera."

[One of the most perplexing anomalies in Argentina - tied to UFO and cattle mutilation phenomena - is the emptying of large water tanks (locally known as tanques australianos - "Australian tanks") from one day to the next. Water is also drained from other sources, including ponds and swimming pools. This report from Luis Burgos of FAO concerns the latest in such developments - SC]

"We were having lunch on Sunday with a cousin who owns a field in the vicinity of the "La Vidriera" salt flats. In order to spend time with us, he left another relative alone in the field in charge of the animals. Just as we were done eating, the relative phoned him in a state of near-derangement. The previous day he had filled up the water tank shut the windmill down because the tank was full. It has a capacity of 60,000 liters (16,000 gallons) of water more or less.

But there was not a drop to be found on Sunday morning. No sign of puddles or spills around the tank. No cracks on the tank's floor either. He told me, furthermore, that it has a 6 inch flood cap and when they drain it, it takes more than half a day to empty it out completely.
