The bizarre case of the mutilated cow

Colorado - Cattle mutilations in Las Animas County were the topic of a Sept. 4 edition of The Unexplained Files on the Discovery Science Channel.

Tom Miller, who ranches northeast of Trinidad, appeared on the show to talk about a rash of mysterious mutilations which have occurred on his ranch since 1997.

Just this year, Miller said he has witnessed two mutilations, a calf and a full-grown cow. In both cases, the eyes, tongues, internal and sexual organs had been removed in what Miller called a "surgical" manner, apparently by a laser.

No blood was at the scene, nor any sign the animals had been dragged or moved. There were no predatory bites or claw marks on the carcasses.

Not surprisingly, Miller said he has no rational explanation for the incidents.

That's because there is no rational explanation.

Take it from one who witnessed the aftermath of such a mutilation.

In the mid-1990s, while working for a Trinidad newspaper, a fellow reporter (Pat Malone) and I stumbled upon a cattle mutilation story by happy accident. At Trinidad High School to do a sports-related story, a coach - Mike Duran - nonchalantly asked if the sheriff had contacted us about a cattle mutilation that occurred on his property a few days prior.

Replying in the negative, we listened as Duran gave a few details about the odd incident, the main point being that the carcass was still in the field, just as it had been discovered. It was enough to convince us to make the drive about 15 miles west to investigate.

Teen's hairy run-in with 7-footer probed as Bigfoot encounter

Lincoln, Nebraska - Before July, Saunders County Sheriff Kevin Stukenholtz had never fielded a call about Bigfoot over a lifetime in law enforcement.

Now he has a big mystery on his hands.

Stukenholtz, along with the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, investigated a reported sighting of an unidentified "hairy" creature in late July on a country road that parallels the Platte River. A hair sample found at the site was still being analyzed.

A 15-year-old reported seeing the creature, which he said stood about 7 feet tall on two legs as it ran in front of the vehicle the youth was driving about 5:30 a.m. The creature then disappeared into the trees along the river.

Stukenholtz, who became county sheriff six years ago after a long career with the Nebraska State Patrol, said he has no reason to believe the report was a hoax. His office is awaiting a report about hair gathered from the scene, between Morse Bluff and Linwood, about 60 miles west of Omaha.

The sheriff said that even though he thinks it's highly unlikely that Sasquatch has shown up in Saunders County, his office has an obligation to check out credible reports.

"We aren't sure what it was, but we're looking into it," Stukenholtz said.

The sighting comes as Sasquatch is enjoying a run in the media spotlight.

India: Footprints in rock evidence of ancient people from sky?

Probably thousands of years old, these footprints are engraved on granite rock by the earlier inhabitants of the area and are believed by the locals to be those of king gods Rama and Lakshmana.
A quaint village in central India has fueled some Facebook discussion on ancient foot prints and an engraved image of a mysterious flying object.

In Piska Nagri village, on the outskirts of Ranchi City in Jharkahnd State, geologist Nitish Priyadarshi has been studying large footprints that, according to local lore, may signify the presence of gods from the sky landing on site.

The footprints are on a rock and look like they were of those wearing wooden sandals commonly worn thousands of years ago in the region. One set of footprints measures 11 inches in length and 5 inches in width, and another set in the same area measures 10 inches by 4.5 inches. God-kings of Indian mythology Lord Rama and Lord Lakshmana are believed to have spent time in the area in search of Rama's wife, Sita.

Priyadarshi said the imprints are on granite rock, and thus were likely carved there rather than imprinted on the hard substance. "It may have been made by the local people manually at that time in memory of the visitors," he said.

Man discovers phantom figure in Facebook photo, image analyst: "I believe this is a real ghost"

    Ghost in Window
    © WhoForted?
A New Hampshire man made a startling discovery when he noticed a ghostly figure photobombing a friend's Facebook snapshot. Now, an expert photo analyst is saying that the phantom is real.

Two weeks ago, Daniel Tanner decided to peruse a friend's online photo album when something eerie caught his eye. In the background of an image that shows Tanner's friend posing with her canine companion, what appears to be the ghost of a young girl can be seen peering through a window.

"My friend has been claiming for months that her house is haunted," Tanner told Reddit. "Her husband took this pic a few days ago."

Tanner claims that the only people in the house at the time of the photograph were his friend and her husband, who snapped the image.

While plenty of skeptics were quick to argue that the phantom girl was simply a trick of the eye, a a reflection, or even a clever hoax, the only investigator to bring any expertise to the table was a veteran photo analyst with 15 years of experience under his belt. After performing an in-depth search for evidence of manipulation, he gave the amateur sleuths an incredibly detailed breakdown of the image. His official opinion? The spooky photo is the real deal.
