United States Congress blocks GMO labeling DARK Act

Center for Food Safety today praised the US Congress for not including a policy rider in the must-pass federal omnibus spending bill that would have blocked states from implementing mandatory genetically engineered (GE) food labeling laws.

Three states, Connecticut, Maine and Vermont, have passed such laws, with Vermont's slated be to be the first to go into effect in July 2016. All three democratically passed laws would have been nullified, while any future state GE labeling legislation would have been preempted. Over 30 states have introduced bills to labeling GE foods in just the past few years.

The floodgates are open for more genetically modified animals—possibly even humans.

Last week saw the approval of another genetically modified animal— this time a chicken genetically altered to produce a drug in its eggs. The drug is designed to replace a faulty enzyme in people with a rare genetic condition that prevents the body from breaking down fatty molecules in cells.

The genetically engineered (GE) chicken is not approved for human consumption, but it is the third so-called "farmaceutical" approved in the US market. Preceding the chicken was a GE goat that produces antithrombin, an anticoagulant, in its milk. Last year the FDA also approved a drug for treating hereditary angioedema that is produced by transgenic (GE) rabbits.

On that day, His Honor, Judge Manuel J. Mendez, J.S.C., handed down the decision overturning a Mayor Bloomberg-era regulation requiring all children 6 months through 59 months of age must obtain a flu vaccine in order to attend pre-schools, day care centers and Head Start Programs regulated by the City of New York.

Interestingly, the Judge in his order wrote on page 6, "The Court of Appeals further stated that §558(b) of the New York City Charter 'contains no suggestion that the Board of Health has the authority to create laws'."

Comment: Good news for New Yorkers. Now, this needs to be applicable to children of all ages in all states.

I have long been convinced that the body is healthier when we have more physical contact with the natural energetic field of the earth. Grounding (also referred to as Earthing) means connecting your body directly to this field and experiencing the benefits of connection with the electric fields of Earth.

This is easy to do. My recommendation is to ground at least 150 minutes a week. You can do that by going barefoot while gardening, camping, hiking, or walking on the beach or by swimming in the ocean—there are so many ways to connect to the natural world.

Last spring, veterinarians in Chicago became overwhelmed by dogs with high fevers, hacking coughs, copiously dripping noses, runny eyes, lethargy and loss of appetite. Over nearly two months, at least 1,500 dogs fell ill, many for as long as three weeks. At least eight died from secondary infections like pneumonia.

Initially, veterinarians thought they were seeing an outbreak of canine influenza, caused by a mutation of H3N8, an equine virus. But these dogs were much sicker for much longer, and the illness seemed more contagious, racing through doggy day care centers, dog parks and especially boarding kennels, which had been filling for the spring holidays.

Eventually virologists identified it as a new strain of canine influenza. This one is a mutation of avian flu, H3N2, which had previously been documented only in Asia. Since the Chicago outbreak, scatterings of cases have been reported in 25 states, with more significant outbreaks in and around Atlanta and Cincinnati.

Now, a vaccine for canine influenza virus H3N2 has received conditional approval from the United States Department of Agriculture, which expedites licensing in emergency situations to avert epidemics. As the holiday travel season approaches, the question is: Should you get your dog vaccinated?

Systemic abuse: Majority of opioid painkiller prescriptions written by family physicians, not 'pill mills'

Most prescriptions for opioid painkillers are made by the broad swath of U.S. general practitioners, not by a limited group of specialists, according to a study by researchers at the Stanford University School of Medicine.

This finding contrasts with previous studies by others that indicated the U.S. opioid epidemic is stoked by a small population of prolific prescribers operating out of corrupt "pill mills."

The study, which examined Medicare prescription drug claims data for 2013, will appear in a research letter that will be published online Dec. 14 in JAMA Internal Medicine.

"The bulk of opioid prescriptions are distributed by the large population of general practitioners," said lead author Jonathan Chen, MD, PhD, an instructor of medicine and Stanford Health Policy VA Medical Informatics Fellow.

While it might be cynical to state that big pharmaceutical companies are deliberately encouraging the use of addictive painkillers in the hope of upping profits, and palming responsibility for the thousands of overdose deaths from those same painkillers onto doctors and patients, some people are certainly starting to believe that this is the case.

It's been noted several times that aggressive marketing on the part of pharmaceutical companies has been more than a little responsible for high-strength, ultra-addictive opioids, which would once have been used only for end-stage terminal patients and the like, are being offered to people with back ache and migraines.

Homeopathy is a thorn in the side of Pharma because of the fact that its unique medicines are FDA regulated, safe, inexpensive, and can't be patented.

Now that the deadline for public comment at FDA (Food and Drug Administration) and FTC (Federal Trade Commission) has officially come to a close, supporters of homeopathy are waiting to see what steps, if any, will be taken to further regulate the marketing of homeopathic medicines. In light of these developments and other recent events, some believe that there is an organized effort under way to discredit this venerable medical art and science.

Homeopathy is a 200 year-old holistic system of healing with a remarkable safety record and a reputation for yielding excellent results. It employs small doses of naturally occurring substances, which are prescribed in accordance with the principle of similars: A treatment is chosen on the basis of a homeopathic medicine's ability to closely mimic the symptom pattern of the sick individual.

However, FDA and FTC actions in the U.S. along with similar developments in the U.K., Australia, and Canada have homeopathic supporters wondering.

New study says heads of state age faster and die sooner

Leading a country comes with extraordinary privileges but also, apparently, a price: new research suggests that heads of state age faster than normal and that the stress of the job may shave almost three years off their life expectancy.

Doctors analyzed how long presidents and prime ministers in 17 countries — including Britain, Canada, France, Germany and the U.S. — survived after leaving office, compared to the losing candidates. They also observed the number of years that heads of state lived versus what was expected for someone of the same age and gender.

After considering the fates of 279 heads of state and 261 runner-ups, they concluded former leaders lived for almost three fewer years than expected. The study was published online Monday in the medical journal, The BMJ.

Well, it's official: presidents and prime ministers really do age more quickly and die younger than their peers. But is it the stress of "leading the country" or the stress of being a disposable puppet for the oligarchy that does them in?
