Brave new food: Genetically engineered animals make their way to American dinner tables

GMO animals
The BBC reports that cloned products have been in the U.S. food supply for years.

Consumers, safety activists, Big Food, biotech companies and many of the U.S.'s importing and exporting partners have been closely watching to see if the FDA would approve the genetically engineered AquAdvantage Salmon, which it did last month. Of course unlabeled GE crops are eaten by millions and GE animals have been created to make human drugs largely under the public radar. Still the AquAdvantage Salmon is the first approved GE animal destined for the U.S. dinner table.

The AquAdvantage Salmon is not the only GE food animal in the works. Scientists at the Roslin Institute at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, where Dolly the cloned sheep was created, have spent years creating chickens that can be used as "biofactories" to make eggs with interferon and other disease-fighting substances.

Comment: The Health and Wellness Show - 27 Nov 2015 - Frankenfoods: GMOs in our Foodchain
The latest news on the Genetically Modified foods front is the FDA approval of the GMO salmon in the US, or "Frankenfish", as it's not-so-affectionately termed. This marks the first genetically modified animal food to be approved for entry into our foodchain, and its approval in other countries is anticipated to follow, despite widespread public outcry.

Today on the SOTT Talk Radio Network's Health and Wellness Show, we'll be reopening the topic of GMOs and exploring the implication of genetically modified animal foods entering our foodchain. Is there any hope in avoiding these frankenfoods? Join us as we explore this topic and more.

Muscle testing: Tapping into the subconscious mind to reveal hidden secrets

muscle testing
Muscle testing, or applied kinesiology, is an emerging practice that can reveal hidden secrets in the subconscious energetic body. The energetic system of the body has been largely ignored by mainstream medicine but has its roots in ancient cultures thousands of years old. In fact, this is the system that is being worked on in not only muscle testing, but acupuncture, pressure points, massage, tapping, and some homeopathic pain patches. Muscle testing includes but is not limited to a few different hybrid techniques like: Neuro Emotional Technique or NET, Autonomic Response Testing, and Applied Psycho Neurobiology.

Why Don't Most People Believe in An Energetic Body?

There has not been much scientific research performed at all on the energetic body due to pharmaceutical backed studies. However, there is a wealth of personal accounts of vast improvement with muscle testing. Kinesiology and muscle testing blossomed under the care of most chiropractors. Again, most medical doctors have a misguided view of chiropractors which is too bad, considering the American Medical Association was found guilty of conspiracy against chiropractors in the 1980s.

Despite vaccination 13 cases of whooping cough confirmed in North Carolina Davie County schools

whooping cough
Pertussis - commonly known as whooping cough - is a serious bacteria. It causes spasms of severe coughing, which can cause those who have it to vomit and lose breath. In the worst cases, it can be deadly. In recent weeks, it made its way to two schools in Davie County.

The first case was reported on December 7. Today, the school system reported 13 confirmed cases, 11 in Davie High School, and two in the early college.

"That's pretty alarming actually, it really is," said Patrick Jacobs, father of a Davie High sophomore.

Corrupting science for profit: Coca Cola funding research on 'healthy' eating

coca cola
Coca-Cola has spent £8.9 million over the past five years funding top British scientists carrying out research on healthy-eating.

An investigation by the Times found the soft drinks giant has funded or given "professional fees" to several prominent scientists and researchers, some of whom have cast doubt on the widely acknowledged link between sugary drinks and obesity.

As part of this, some 27 British scientists received £350,000 (US$520,000) from the multinational corporation.

Comment: Unfortunately, Coca Cola is not the only food giant responsible for influencing scientific research to confuse the public in an attempt to deny the fact that their toxic sugar and chemical laced products pose significant dangers to health.

Acupuncture may be a safe and effective treatment for children in chronic pain

acupuncture
Acupuncture may be a safe and effective adjunctive treatment for chronic pain in children, according to a new study at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago.

Pediatric patients with chronic pain who underwent eight sessions of acupuncture treatment experienced a significant reduction in pain as well as an increase in emotional health.

"The results of this study suggest that acupuncture can have a profound positive impact on the health and well-being of children who experience the disabling effects of chronic pain," said researcher Angela Johnson, M.P.H., a practitioner of Chinese medicine at Rush's Cancer Integrative Medicine Program who holds a master's degree in traditional Oriental medicine.

Treating children with chronic pain has long been a complex dilemma. Since children are still growing and developing, there is a fear of causing long-term negative effects. Data about the safety and efficacy of therapeutic options for children is still limited.

Magnesium may be beneficial in prevention of pancreatic cancer

magnesium
Indiana University researchers have found that magnesium intake may be beneficial in preventing pancreatic cancer.

Their study, "Magnesium intake and incidence of pancreatic cancer: The VITamins and Lifestyle study," recently appeared in the British Journal of Cancer.

Pancreatic cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer-related death in both men and women in the United States. The overall occurrence of pancreatic cancer has not significantly changed since 2002, but the mortality rate has increased annually from 2002 to 2011, according to the National Cancer Institute.

"Pancreatic cancer is really unique and different from other cancers," said study co-author Ka He, chair of the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the IU School of Public Health-Bloomington. "The five-year survival rate is really low, so that makes prevention and identifying risk factors or predictors associated with pancreatic cancer very important."

Comment: Every single cell in the human body demands adequate magnesium to function, or it will perish. Strong bones and teeth, balanced hormones, a healthy nervous and cardiovascular system, well functioning detoxification pathways and much more depend upon cellular magnesium sufficiency. Soft tissue containing the highest concentrations of magnesium in the body include the brain and the heart - two organs that produce a large amount of electrical activity, and which can be especially vulnerable to magnesium insufficiency.

How a high fat, low carbohydrate diet could help treat schizophrenia

According to research conducted by James Cook University, a high-fat, low carbohydrate diet may be key in treating schizophrenia.

cetosis
Did you know? The foods you consume affect your well-being and happiness and, according to recent research, may even play a role in treating conditions such as schizophrenia.

According to research conducted by James Cook University, a ketogenic diet, which is favored by bodybuilders, may be key in healing schizophrenia.

When Associate Professor Zoltan Sarnyai and his research group from JCU's Australian Institute of Tropical Health and Medicine (AITHM) experimented by feeding mice a ketogenic diet, they discovered that a high-fat, low carbohydrate (sugar) diet leads to fewer animal behaviors that resemble schizophrenia.

For many researchers, this news isn't surprising. A ketogenic diet has been used since the 1920's to manage epilepsy in children. Most recently, the diet has been relied on by bodybuilders as a preferred way to lose weight.

When a person goes into ketosis, their body begins burning the products of fat breakdown (ketones) for fuel rather than carbohydrates.

Dr. Sarnyai believes this diet may help treat Schizophrenia because the alternative energy source (ketones) helps to circumvent abnormally functioning cellular energy pathways in the brains of those who suffer from the condition.

Researcher finds watching 'bloodcurdling' horror movies really raises levels of clotting chemicals in the blood

Horror movies
© Daily MailThe groups viewed the films about a week apart, during the same time of day and in a comfortable and relaxed environment. Factor VIII levels went up in 57 percent of the participants while watching the scary movie and fell 86 percent when they watched the educational film.
Using the term 'bloodcurdling' to describe a horror movie might not be so silly after all.

A new study found that when we feel scared, our blood does actually curdle.

Researchers discovered that the amount of a clotting protein, Factor VIII, increases in our blood when we become frightened.

Treating common sources of foot pain without surgery

plantar fasciitis, foot pain
The feet are a very common source of pain, with 8 in 10 Americans experiencing some form of problem with their feet. One in 4 says they're unable to exercise due to foot pain.

This isn't so surprising when you consider that 25 percent of your bones are located in your feet and ankles, and your feet are the foundation of your body, carrying all your weight.

With 26 bones and 33 joints in each foot, there's plenty of opportunity for something to go wrong — especially if you fail to walk and run with proper form and posture. Certain footwear, including flip-flops, and tight-fitting or high-heeled shoes may also damage your foot structure and aggravate the situation.

Moreover, few people pay attention to exercising their feet, and without proper muscle strength in your feet, your body may become imbalanced, which can lead to pain in other areas.

Simple foot exercises can make a big difference for problems such as bunions and hammertoes. Other common foot problems include plantar fasciitis (heel pain), ingrown toenails, and fungal infections, and in these instances other remedies are warranted.

In this article, I'll review several common foot problems that cause pain and discomfort, with recommendations for simple and inexpensive treatments.
