Pharmaceutical giant Johnson & Johnson has lost its second legal battle in a row over its talcum powder, which has been alleged to cause cancer. The company must now pay $55 million to a woman who says she got ovarian cancer after using the product.

Less than four months after losing a $72 million case in the same St. Louis, Missouri, courthouse, Johnson & Johnson was ordered to pay $5 million in compensation and $50 million in punitive damages to Gloria Ristesund.

The Synthetic Butcher Shop: Scientists are working to make cows obsolete

Cows
© Sandra Mu/GettyCows are becoming useless
We depend on cows for food, clothing, and sometimes even insulin. Cattle, though, are expensive and inefficient—each cow drinks a bathtub of water and emits three times that volume of methane daily. There are also the ethics of animal slaughter. But we might no longer need the cow.

Scientists are synthesizing the substances we normally get from cows by using bovine cells, yeast, and even bacteria.

Meat

Since tissue engineer Mark Post debuted an in vitro burger in 2013, several companies have tried to create tasty, scalable test-tube meat. Though Memphis Meats recently unveiled a cultured meatball, two challenges—chewability and cost—have derailed other attempts.

Mistake or stealth attack on vaccine opponents? State of Colorado sends out letter requiring parents to register unvaccinated children

vaccine
Here's the fraud of the State in action.

It seems that the Colorado Dept. of Public Health and Environment sent out a letter to parents demanding that those who have not vaccinated their children register them on a state website under requirement by law ... the only problem is that there is no such law.

The agency has apologized, claiming the letter was sent out by mistake, but their intent was revealed anyway.

A law was proposed to require a "yellow star" registration process for families who don't vaccinate ... but the law did not make it out of committee. Of course, that doesn't mean that the bill's sponsors will give up.

via Off the Grid News:
A number of parents received a letter this month from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, which said in the document that parents of unvaccinated children in school would be required to register and exempt their child through a state website.

..."My biggest issue is that you are trying to take my child's information - that you have zero legislative authority to do - to track and to possibly come back to me," parent Missy Frazier said, according to The Gazette newspaper. "Where does this end, and with whom are you going to share this information?"
It is hardly surprising that the school district is being accused of deliberately spreading the misconception that parents are legally required to comply.

Getting high on dirt

dirt
No, we're not talking about the type of high cannabis or psychedelics might provide. We're talking about being high on life, feeling good and warding off depression and other lower states of feeling. That's what new research is saying about dirt!

With a plethora of pills on the market today to help ease and eliminate depression, it can seem defeating to feel like we live in a world where holistic remedies are buried beneath synthetics. However, soil microbes may be on your side, as they have been found to have similar effects on the brain as Prozac, minus the side effects and potential of chemical dependency.

Hormone disruptors: Everyday poisons in everyday life

hormone disruptors
The Big Food giants, the pesticide and genetic engineering corporations such as Monsanto, the chemical, cosmetics, body care, food packaging, bottled water, and home furnishings industries—they all have a dirty secret.

All of these industries make products that are routinely laced with dangerous, often deadly chemicals called hormone (or endocrine) disruptors. These chemicals can make you (and your children) fat, diabetic, susceptible to cancer and infertility. They can cause damaging mental and behavioral changes. Pregnant women who ingest even tiny amounts of these chemicals can give birth to boys with genital deformities, and girls who will reach puberty at an alarming young age.

A massive chemical attack on Americans: Asbestos

asbestos
Asbestos. Though you're likely familiar with the insidious minerals used in fireproofing and a number of other applications, first responders to the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center and residents in the area know intimately the dangers it can pose.

Once you've breathed in even a single fiber of asbestos — a "known human carcinogen" — you're theoretically at risk for developing cancer, asbestosis, mesothelioma, and more. Though the National Cancer Institute states "[e]veryone is exposed to asbestos at some time during their life," repeated or sustained exposure poses the greatest risk. And it specifically lists first responders to 9/11, volunteers who helped during the aftermath, and residents "in close proximity" to the site as having documented health effects from asbestos and other unknown toxins released into the air that day.

Plantain: The edible weed that heals and soothes

Plantain
If you do not chemically treat your yard, chances are very good that you have some plantain growing there. Plantain - not to be confused with the banana-like fruit of the same name - is a common weed found throughout North America.

Native Americans have called plantain "Whiteman's Foot" because it seems to spring up everywhere. Although many consider plantain to be a noxious weed, it has been used for centuries by many cultures throughout the world, with the Saxons calling it one of their nine sacred herbs.

Comment: Plantain salve can be very healing on the skin to take the burn out of sunburn.

Dr. Carl Hart on addiction: Drugs are not really the problem

addiction
© amazon.com
What do the 1994 Crime Bill and our current heroin scare have in common? Blaming social and human problems on drugs.

Columbia University neuropsychologist Carl Hart has written a bestseller, High Price, comprising two related parts: his research with drugs showing that drugs' effects are secondary in relation to the rewards associated with them (pay addicts enough and they quit), and his experience of life in the Miami ghetto, in which the introduction of crack to the community, and crack's ultimate disappearance from it, had no impact on the social depredations pervading that community.

The bottom line of both experiences: drugs are not the problem.

Comment: Outspoken drug critic Dr. Carl Hart: Popular big pharma drug Adderall is pretty much crystal meth
Hart went on to discuss crystal meth and made a statement that would surprise many of the mainstream viewers who were tuned into the show, that it is basically the same thing as Adderall, something that is entirely legal and is prescribed to millions. When Hayes replied back that this couldn't have been true, Hart mentioned a number of studies where the drugs were actually compared and found to be nearly identical.

One thing that was not discussed in the quick interview was the fact that harsh and highly synthetic street drugs would actually not exist if it were not for prohibition. In environments where drugs are legal, there is no incentive for people to create these dangerous synthetics because pure and safe drugs are available to them at low costs.

This is not a perspective that is encouraging drug use, but rather an understanding that prohibition does not work, and that people are going to use illegal substances one way or another if that is what they want to do. In addition to not working, prohibition also makes life more dangerous for everyone because the drugs are dirtier, and a violent black market develops which impacts the lives of everyone.

Snowflake Cold

The surprising health benefits of extreme cold and hot temperatures

cold adaptation
When it comes to improving your health, some of the simplest strategies can have a tremendous impact. For example, did you know that exposure to extreme temperatures can serve as a catalyst to improve your health?

In a previous interview, biological scientist Rhonda Patrick, Ph.D. discussed the importance of mitochondrial function — a topic she expands on in this interview. As it turns out, exposure to extreme temperatures, be it hot or cold, actually improves mitochondrial function.

Mitochondria are the energy generators in your cells. While you have about 35 trillion bacteria and as many cells in our body, you have about 500 to 1,000 times more mitochondria. Estimates suggest you may have anywhere from 15 to 50 quadrillion mitochondria.

When your mitochondria are not working properly, your body's ability to generate energy is impaired. The key is to get the old ones out and to create new ones — a process known as mitochondrial biogenesis. There are a number of strategies that can do that, including:
  • Exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures
  • Exercise
  • Intermittent fasting or time-restricted feeding
  • Certain supplements, such as resveratrol
All of these strategies stimulate the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma coactivator 1 alpha (PGC-1 alpha), which is the primary driver for mitochondrial biogenesis. And when it comes to maintaining biological functioning and good health, the more mitochondria you have the better.
