Geologists 'closely monitoring' rising magma under Oregon volcanic region

Geologist: 'Things are coming back to life now'.
Three Sisters Uplift
Portland, Oregon — The Pacific Northwest is well known for its stunning summits and plentiful peaks, but are the mountains moving?

In a USGS Hazard Notification statement Monday, Cascades Volcano Observatory announced their scientists have tracked an increased rate of ground uplift in the Three Sisters volcanic region found in the southwest corner of Oregon.

Using satellite radar images and GPS units, USGS scientists have tracked an increased rate of uplift for a 12-mile diameter region, 3 miles west of the South Sister volcano. According to USGS, the data suggests the ground rose 0.9 inches (2.2 cm) from June 2020 to August 2021.

Scott Burns, a geology professor at Portland State University, told Nexstar's KOIN that while episodes of increased uplift have been observed in this region before, the cause is what local scientists are excited about.

"The Three Sisters area is an area that we've been studying for the last 25 years," Burns explained. "It's very exciting because magma is moving up underneath the volcano ... the last major volcanic eruption in Oregon, which was 2,000 years ago, was right there in that area."

Heavy snow blankets Sea of Japan coast - 31 inches of snowfall in 24 hours

snow
A strong winter pressure pattern and a cold air mass above Japan have brought heavy snow, especially along the Sea of Japan coast from Hokkaido down to the Chugoku region.

Some areas of Niigata and Nagano prefectures got more than 80 centimeters of snow in the 24 hours through Sunday morning.

As of 9 a.m. on Sunday, snow accumulation of 342 centimeters was recorded in the town of Tsunan in Niigata Prefecture, and 262 centimeters in the village of Nozawaonsen in Nagano Prefecture.

In the city of Sapporo in the country's northernmost prefecture of Hokkaido, 108 centimeters of snow was on the ground. The last time the city saw snow deeper than one meter was in March 2014.

Two skiers were killed by an avalanche in western Austria, police said on Saturday, hours after another avalanche in the same province killed five people on an unusually dangerous day in the Alps after heavy snowfall followed by warmer weather.

Emergency services found the bodies of the two Austrian skiers, a woman aged 61 and a 60-year-old man, at 00:40 a.m. on Saturday (2340 GMT on Friday) after their relatives raised the alarm when they could no longer be contacted, police said.

The pair had set out in the Tyrol region on Friday afternoon and the man told a contact by phone at 3:30 p.m. (1430 GMT) that they had reached the 1,868-metre (6,129-ft) Breitegg peak. That was their last contact.

12-year-old boy killed by pack of stray dogs inside a primary school in Pakistan

dog attack
A devastating and tragic incident has recently unfolded in which a 12-year-old boy was viciously attacked by a pack of stray dogs inside a primary school in Dera Ghazi Khan. Eyewitnesses claim that the boy's plea for help fell on deaf ears after which he suffered an epileptic attack, fell unconscious and was then mauled by five dogs. On being moved to the hospital, the boy was declared dead by doctors.

The blood of this boy is on the hands of the school administration for negligence, the local municipal corporation for failing to control the population of stray dogs in the city, and the emergency service Rescue 1122 that did not arrive upon calling. Safety and security should be the top-most priority of government schools across the country.

Huge US winter storm leaves over 330,000 without power and 9,000 flights cancelled

snow
A winter storm that dumped sleet and heavy snow on a wide swath of the central United States this week has left hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses without power.

More than 330,000 customers were without power from Texas, Arkansas, and Tennessee up through Ohio and into New York, Poweroutage.us showed on Friday, after an ice storm downed power lines and trees across the area.

Freezing rain and snow weighed down tree limbs and encrusted power lines, and brought rare measurable snowfall and hundreds of power outages to parts of the southern state Texas.

Power restoration could take days, said Gale Carson, the utility's spokeswoman. "It's not going to be a quick process," she said.

A FREAK ball of lightning has killed a goose in Cheshire.

Startled workers at Booths Park, Knutsford, watched the rare aerial phenomenon from the window of their office shortly after 2pm on Friday.

Chris Harrison, from Knutsford, said: "It was very weird. We saw a ball of flame around 10 metres above the ground beside the lake.

"The ball was around five metres in diameter and only lasted for three seconds.

"Apparently ball lightning is incredibly rare, we have certainly never seen anything like it before.
