Meteorologist Mike Masco has identified what he says could be a very active storm pattern for the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic from around New Year's Day into mid-January.

"I've been deconstructing the pattern this morning, and there are three key features that support an active stretch across the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, including the potential for at least two sizable snow events, plus several smaller ones," Masco wrote on X.

Masco is a meteorologist for New York City-based PIX11 News and focuses on the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions.

He explained what the active post-New Year pattern could bring on a region-by-region basis:

Man found dead inside vehicle submerged in floodwaters amid record rainfall in Queensland, Australia - over a metre of rain in 4 days

A 70-year-old man was found dead inside a car submerged in floodwaters at Normanton, as extreme rainfall continues to inundate large parts Queensland.

Police were called to Gulf Development Road shortly after 3pm on Tuesday, where the man was discovered dead.

Queensland Premier David Crisafulli announced the death on Wednesday morning, saying the loss had deeply affected the local community in the north-west where the man lived.

"In the end, property can be replaced. People can't," Mr Crisafulli told Sunrise from Mount Isa, where he was inspecting flood damage.

The Premier said two weather systems had dumped extraordinary rainfall across the region, with some isolated areas recording totals exceeding those seen during the devastating 2019 floods.

"This is certainly not as widespread as that, but there are isolated pockets where people have had some really, really significant damage and some significant loss," he said.

mmmmmmm
Heavy snowfall in Poland caused tailbacks stretching as far as 20 km (12.43 miles) on a motorway between the capital Warsaw and the Baltic port city of Gdansk during ‌the night, police said on Wednesday. While the situation ‌left hundreds of people trapped in their cars in freezing conditions, by the early hours of Wednesday morning traffic was moving again, according to police.

"The difficult situation began yesterday after 4 pm, when the first trucks on the S7 route... began having trouble approaching the slopes," ‌said ‌Tomasz Markowski, a spokesperson for police in the northern city of Olsztyn.

"This led to a traffic jam stretching approximately 20 kilometres overnight." Anna Karczewska, a spokesperson for police ‌in Ostroda, said officers had tried to help drivers who found themselves stuck. Ostroda lies on the ‍highway about 40 km west of Olsztyn.

"We helped as much as we could, and we had coffee and hot tea for the drivers, which the Ostroda City Hall had prepared for us," she said.

State news agency PAP reported that there had also been some disruption to ‌railways and airports, but that services were returning to normal.

Torrential rain and stormy weather caused flooding and uprooted trees across northern and central Israel on Monday, with intense downpours recorded from Haifa to the Sea of Galilee and strong winds buffeting much of the country.

In the coastal city of Haifa, water surged in streets, turning some into rushing streams, and in Herzliya a tree fell onto a passing car. The driver was unhurt and did not require medical attention, said Magen David Adom paramedic Nir Keisar. "We arrived to find the vehicle in the middle of the road with the tree on top," he said. "The driver said it fell as he was driving. It was a miracle he was not injured."

Trees also came down in the northern city of Acre and in the moshav Matzliah. In the northern city of Karmiel, residents reported heavy hail.

A man in his 60s was seriously injured in Tel Aviv on Monday after a balcony collapsed on top of him. Magen David Adom paramedic Simcha Simanduyev and EMT Shimon Peresh said: "He was lying on the sidewalk near the building, semi-conscious and surrounded by rubble. He suffered multi-system trauma." The man was evacuated to the city's Sourasky Medical Center.
