First major storm of the season drops 2 feet of snow in 2 days in Montana (UPDATE)

The first major snowstorm of the season dropped up to a foot of snow in the Helena, Mont., area by Wednesday morning, canceling some school bus routes on the western side of the city as snow continued to fall throughout the morning.

Residents woke up to swirling snow, the sound of shovels on sidewalks and snowplows on pavement just days after temperatures rose into the lower 80s. Trees with orange leaves and Halloween decorations were weighed down with snow.

The National Weather Service warned of hazardous travel on snowy mountain passes and ice on some highways when snow initially melts and then freezes as road temperatures drop.

The first big snowstorm of the season was a good one! Most locations in the state at least a few inches of snow, and a few locations saw up to two feet. The snow began falling late Tuesday and continued throughout Wednesday and into Thursday.

Most of the snow accumulation is now done with, but roads are going to continue to be icy/snow-covered for the next couple of days, so please use extreme caution when driving and give yourself some extra time to get to where you need to go.

Rains continue to hit the UAE today, as the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) issued orange and yellow alerts for most of the country, warning residents to be careful when venturing outdoors.

Abu Dhabi Police too sent out an alert to residents - particularly motorists. As roads fill up with water, motorists are urged to exercise caution while driving. They must follow the changing speed limits which are displayed on electronic sign boards.

Thousands of people have been displaced after Tropical Cyclone Tej triggered severe flooding in south-eastern Yemen on 23 October 2023. Heavy rain and some damage from flooding was also reported in neighbouring Oman.

Tropical Cyclone Tej made landfall along the coast between the coastal city of Al Ghaydah, capital of Al Mahrah Governorate in south-eastern Yemen, and Salalah, capital city of Oman's Dhofar Governorate.

Yemen Meteorological Services reported 406 mm of rain fell at Al Ghaydah Airport in the space of a few hours.

The Yemen Red Crescent Society said Cyclone Tej caused widespread destruction across Al Mahrah Governorate. Particularly badly affected are the districts of Al Ghaydah and Haswayn.

After months of closure, visitors to Death Valley national park are being greeted by stunning new features, including lakes left behind by a ferocious summer deluge.

The park reopened last week after being shuttered in August, when a record-breaking tropical storm unleashed a year's worth of rain in a single day.

Dramatic images emerging from the park show arid dunes now dotted with lakes.

"Some spectacular things happened in Death Valley following the floods we received from remnants of Hurricane Hilary back in August," the park wrote in an Instagram post on Sunday.

"Ephemeral lakes popped up around the park, which is both pretty rare and amazing!" they added. "Lakes in the sand dunes wasn't on our 2023 bingo card."

Spain's meteorology services say atypical weather system had characteristics of a tropical storm

Storm Bernard battered Southern Spain, causing fatalities, several injuries, and around 2,000 incidents of damage, the Andalusia region's emergency services said on Monday.

The atypical storm, which brought strong winds and heavy rains, reached its peak of destruction late Sunday night and early Monday morning.

One of the men confirmed dead was driving in the Huelva province when a landslide caused his car to flip off the road. Authorities suspect another man died in the city of Cordoba after being struck by sheet metal that the wind ripped off a building.

Weather warnings for rain have been issued to flood-hit areas in England as residents began returning to homes destroyed by Storm Babet.

The Met Office issued a fresh warning for "heavy rain" which it said could lead to further flooding in the East Midlands, including Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire, as well as much of Yorkshire, including Sheffield, Leeds and York, and Humberside.

Norma weakened to tropical storm strength Saturday after bringing hurricane-force winds, flash flooding and storm surge to Mexico's Pacific coast. Meanwhile, another late-season storm continued to threaten island nations in the Atlantic.

Norma made landfall as a Category 1 hurricane with winds of 80 mph over the far southern portion of Mexico's Baja California Sur - which includes Cabo San Lucas - Saturday afternoon, the National Hurricane Center said.

Meanwhile in the Atlantic, Hurricane Tammy made landfall in Barbuda as a Category 1 storm Saturday night, churning maximum sustained winds of 85 mph. Tammy has triggered hurricane warnings, with strong winds and heavy rainfall across portions of the Leeward Islands, a chain of several island nations and territories between the Caribbean Sea and the open Atlantic.

Neither storm is a threat to the US mainland.

Japan is seeing the number of people attacked by bears in fiscal 2023 increase at an unprecedented pace, recent government data showed, with people warned of more encounters as the wild animals forage ahead of hibernation in a lean year for nuts.

A total of 109 people were hurt, two fatally, between April and September, mostly in the northern part of Japan's main island Honshu, according to the Environment Ministry's data. The figure is the highest for the same period since fiscal 2007 when the government started such monthly statistics.

The current record for the highest number of people wounded by the animals, which include Asian black bears and Ussuri brown bears, is 158 in fiscal 2020.

Fifteen prefectures saw victims during the six-month period from April, with around 70 percent of cases in northeastern Japan, according to the ministry's preliminary data released in early October.

An impressive whirlwind was spotted in the early afternoon off the coast of Piombino, a municipality in the province of Livorno.

Around 3pm, numerous citizens who were in Calamoresca, where in the meantime the citadel of the Colline Metallifere Rally had been set up, witnessed this spectacle of nature which, if on the one hand attracted the eyes of many, on the other frightened who feared it might advance from the sea.
