Dead fin whale washes ashore Torrance Beach, California

nnnnnnnn
A large fin whale washed ashore Torrance Beach on Saturday evening and died before rescuers could arrive on the scene.

Lifeguards first discovered the whale at around 6 p.m. inside the surf line on the stretch of beach between Redondo Beach and Malaga Cove, near the intersection of Via Riviera and Paseo De La Playa, according to the Los Angeles County Lifeguards.

They called wildlife experts from the Marine Mammal Care Center and National Marine Fisheries Service to the scene, who confirmed that the whale was dead.

The cause of death remains unknown at the time.

"Due to it size & location it is expected that the whale will remain on the beach while responders create a plan to remove it," said lifeguards said. "If you are in the area please give the animal & responders plenty of space to work!"

It's unclear exactly when the whale's carcass will be recovered from the area.

Comment: Hard to get more explicit than that in terms of symbolism, eh?

Less than two weeks earlier, a pyramid at the Ihuatzio Archaeological Zone in the Mexican state of Michoacán partially buckled under intense rain.

The bricks on the roughly 1,100-year-old pyramid — a significant piece of the Purépecha people's histroy — broke apart from the central part of the southern facade and spilled onto the grass.

Comment: Well, this doesn't sound good.

Remote cameras recently captured a rare natural light show in the sky over Puerto Rico. The hauntingly beautiful bursts are called gigantic jets, an uncommon form of lightning that originates in clouds and shoots upwards, high into the atmosphere, rather than down towards the ground.

Cameras operated by the Caribbean Astronomy Society captured the images in the early hours of August 4. While members of the society were reviewing the footage to examine meteors, they instead saw the bright bursts, which lasted for a few seconds. In a Facebook post, the organization said they had received reports of people seeing the jets from several areas of the island.

Yemen official says 30 people have been killed and hundreds displaced in flooding
A Yemeni official said Wednesday that 30 people have been killed and hundreds displaced in flooding in the southern city of Hodeidah following several days of heavy rains.

Hodeidah Gov. Mugammad Qahim told Houthi rebel-controlled Masirah TV that the floods displaced people from 500 homes. Five people were missing, he said.

Hodeidah, the southwestern city of Taiz, and the northwestern city of Hajjah were all hit hard by floods this week during Yemen's ongoing seasonal rainfall that caused flooding that swept away poorly built homes.

Authorities have not announced a confirmed overall death toll, or given the overall number of people injured or missing.

Yemen's rainy season begins in late March, and rains intensify in July through mid-August.

The U.N.'s humanitarian office in Yemen said Wednesday afternoon that Friday floods in the Maqbnah district in Taiz city killed 15 people, cleared agricultural lands and damaged homes and infrastructure.
