Landslide caused by heavy rains buries homes outside Guinea's capital, killing 15 and injuring 10 (UPDATE)

Guinea Landslide

Heavy rains caused a landslide that struck homes in a rural community in Guinea, killing at least 11 people, authorities said Thursday. Another 10 people were seriously injured and the death toll was expected to rise.

The landslide occurred Wednesday night in Maneah, a rural commune in Coyah prefecture 50 kilometers (31 miles) from the capital Conakry, according to a statement by the National Agency for Emergency Management.

"Last night, it was around 7 p.m. It was raining, and suddenly I saw the mountain come off. It fell on the houses at the foot of the mountain. The mud buried the houses. No survivors came out alive," said Kone Pepe, a local resident.

Search and rescue operations were continuing late Thursday.

"It's a part of the mountain that gave way under the effect of the rain and spilled onto the buildings," Mory Condé, minister of urban planning and housing, said during a visit to the site.

The collapse followed heavy rains in the area and comes after West Africa experienced record flooding last year that killed over 1,000 people and displaced hundreds of thousands.

Comment: Update August 23

Sky News reports:
At least 15 people have been confirmed dead in a landslide in Guinea, which buried homes and residents in the path of the slide.

Heavy rain and flooding on Wednesday and Thursday are expected to have triggered the event.

West Africa has recorded increased rainfall and erosion in recent years, which has resulted in an increase in natural disasters.

Shallow 7.5-magnitude earthquake hits Drake Passage off South America

MMMMMM
Earthquake strikes South America
A major, preliminary magnitude 7.5 earthquake struck in the South Atlantic Ocean late Thursday, the United States Geological Survey reported, prompting Chilean authorities to issue an advisory for a potential tsunami along parts of Antarctica.

There were no evacuation orders immediately declared for Chile or Argentina, the two countries closest to the quake.

The temblor happened at 11:16 p.m. local time in Argentina about 710 kilometers (441 miles) southeast of Ushuaia, Argentina, in the Drake Passage, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The earthquake had a preliminary depth of 10.8 kilometers (6.7 miles).

The Drake Passage connects the South Atlantic and South Pacific oceans between the southern tip of South America and the Antarctic Peninsula.

Though less quake-prone than other stretches of Chile's coast, the Drake Passage straddles a highly active seismic and geological zone.

The area is very remote and there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

Italy has been hit with deadly floods as intense 'water bomb' storms lash down on tourist hotspots causing bridges to crumble and sweeping cars away.

One man has tragically died after being dragged away by an overflowing river after a furious storm struck Sicily, turning roads into rivers.

The popular southern island has been inundated by aggressive rain and Matteo Ciurca, 40, was swept away by the swollen Crisa River in Leonforte, a small commune, after a 'water bomb' smashed the region.

Dramatic footage shows a bridge crumbling as heaps of rocks, concrete, water and other debris hit the ground during a heavy rainstorm.

Vehicles on the San Giuliano bridge near the picturesque town of Randazzo were left in peril as they waded through high waters while the bridge partly disintegrated on Sunday.

One white van can be seen struggling through high waters as rain lashes down and blocks of debris fall.

Comment: La Stampa reports:
Heavy rain fell on the island of Elba, with 54 mm of rain falling in less than an hour in Portoferraio this evening. The regional Civil Protection system is responding to flooding. Trees and rocks have fallen on the island's roads. Elba is caught in a vast storm system, described by regional meteorologists as "slowly evolving," currently affecting an area stretching from the island of Pianosa to the Colline Metallifere, passing through the Gulf of Follonica and Grosseto. Lightning has been reported in large numbers, and the rainfall is particularly heavy. The storm system is expected to move toward other central and southern areas of Tuscany. In the province of Grosseto, firefighters are primarily working in the municipalities of Follonica and Castiglione della Pescaia, where fallen trees have blocked some roads in Le Strette and Macchiascandona, and buildings and private homes in Follonica have been flooded.

A massive landslide has crashed into the sea in Santorini, engulfing a village with dust as tourists watched on - just six months after the holiday island was rattled by earthquakes.

A huge section of land suddenly gave way in the clifftop village of Imerovigli on Sunday afternoon after intense construction activity made the ground unstable.

It comes just months after the paradise island was rattled by more than 20,000 earthquakes between January 26 and February 22 earlier this year.

The country declared a month-long state of emergency as earthquakes struck the volcanic island every ten minutes, causing around 11,000 - more than half Santorini's population - to flee.

The combination of seismic activity and overbuilding have been suggested as potential causes for the recent landslide - with over-development transforming fragile soil into hollow ground.

Two Japanese soldiers died this week of lightning strikes during training in western Japan, a spokesman said Thursday.

Sgt. Kento Tanitsu, 25, and Sgt. Ayu Kubota, 21, of the Western Army Tank Unit, were found in cardiac arrest at 12:06 a.m. Monday at the Japanese army's Hijyudai Maneuver Area in Oita prefecture, the Ground Self-Defense Force spokesman said by phone.

Both were confirmed dead at 1:14 a.m. Monday; an autopsy determined they died from electrocution by lightning, he said.

"The death of our troops during training is extremely regrettable and we take this very seriously," said tank unit commander Col. Motohiko Nakamura, according to the spokesman.

"I would like to once again express our heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased," Nakamura said.

Pakistan declared a public holiday in Karachi on Aug 20 as the financial capital braced itself for more rain, after the arrival of the annual monsoon season left at least seven people dead and caused widespread flooding, officials said.

The monsoon has brought havoc across Pakistan in recent days, with the death toll from flash floods that struck the mountainous north-west on Aug 15 rising to 377.

In Karachi, at least seven people have died since the rain began in the southern port city on Aug 19, said Mr Abdul Wahid Halepoto, a provincial government spokesman. Rainfall reached levels not seen in years in some parts of the city, Pakistan's largest, with a population of more than 20 million.

Deaths were caused by drowning, road accidents, building collapse and electrocution, he said.

The authorities ordered educational institutions and offices to shut.

"We are expecting more intense rain," said Mr Anjum Nazir, a spokesman for the provincial meteorological department.
