Tornado in central Japan was one of strongest ever in country with 270 kilometers per hour gusts

CCCCCCCCC
The Japan Meteorological Agency says a tornado that swept through a swath of Shizuoka Prefecture, central Japan, last Friday is likely to have been one of the strongest ever recorded in the country.

The agency classified a strong gust of wind that hit areas stretching from the city of Makinohara to the town of Yoshida amid an approaching tropical storm as a tornado, after inspecting the extent of damage it left.

It estimated that the wind gusted to approximately 270 kilometers per hour -- powerful enough to deform the exterior walls of a steel-frame building.

The officials rated the intensity of the tornado as a three on the Japanese Enhanced Fujita Scale of zero to five.

The earthquake struck at 5:47 p.m. ET on Monday and was centered in the Vanuatu region, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). It occurred at a preliminary depth of 6.2 miles (10 kilometers).

The epicenter was located about 306 miles (493 kilometers) from Isangel, Vanuatu, and roughly 313 miles (504 kilometers) from Sigatoka, Fiji, the USGS reported.

Initial estimates put the quake at magnitude 6.8 before it was revised downward. No tsunami warnings were issued by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC).

USGS assessments indicate a low likelihood of casualties or damage, with virtually no population in the immediate epicenter area.

The region lies on the eastern edge of the Australia plate, one of the world's most seismically active boundaries where it collides with the Pacific plate, according to seismologists. The zone regularly generates large earthquakes, with dozens of magnitude 7.5 or greater recorded since 1900.

Hawaii declares statewide emergency as Hurricane Kiko nears

Hurricane Kiko is closing in on Hawaii, where residents are preparing for life-threatening rip currents and towering waves up to 15 feet.

The storm is currently moving northwest at 14 mph, and the National Hurricane Center (NHC) said it should maintain that course over the next few days.

On this track, Kiko is expected to pass north of the main Hawaiian Islands on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Spaghetti models show multiple potential paths for the storm, but the most likely track takes it near or just south of the Big Island before moving northwest across the central Pacific.

Comment: From The Weather Channel:
While Hurricane Kiko continues to weaken as it passes north of Hawaii, the state will still experience much larger swells, dangerous rip currents and possibly other impacts this week.

Despite Kiko's weakening trend, swells generated by the storm are beginning to reach Hawaii, causing life-threatening surf and rip currents, especially along east-facing beaches.

The threat for large swells and rip currents will remain in place for the islands through mid-week, especially for north-facing beaches, as Kiko passes to the north.

We could see increased rainfall through the week and some stronger gusts over higher elevations and exposed coastal areas, however, dangerous ocean conditions will be the main threat with this particular storm.

Tens of thousands of people have been evacuated as Typhoon Tapah has made landfall in southern China, causing flight disruptions and school closures.

State broadcaster CCTV said the storm made landfall on Monday morning in the city of Taishan in Guangdong province, unleashing powerful winds and torrential rain.

The Guangdong Meteorological Bureau raised a yellow alert, the third highest in China's four-tier warning system, and forecast thunderstorms and gale-force winds.

Authorities said an estimated 60,000 people have been evacuated across southern China before the storm came ashore with maximum winds of 108 kilometres per hour (67 miles per hour).

Guangdong's Emergency Management Department ordered the suspension of all outdoor activities and closed recreational areas like parks and beaches. Schools were also closed.

Guangdong has been hit by 16 typhoons this year. Tapah is expected to move northwest, gradually losing power until it exits the province.

Best of the Web: Shallow earthquake of magnitude 6 in eastern Afghanistan kills more than 2,200 people (UPDATED)

mmmmmm
More than 800 people were killed in one of Afghanistan's worst earthquakes, authorities said on Monday, as helicopters ferried the wounded to hospital after they were plucked from rubble being combed for survivors.

The disaster will further stretch the resources of nation already grappling with humanitarian crises, from a sharp drop in aid to a huge pushback of its citizens from neighbouring countries.

The quake of magnitude 6 killed at least 800 people and another 2,500 were injured in Kunar province, spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid told a press conference in the capital Kabul. While he updated the casualty count for Kunar, he noted that the toll of 12 dead and 255 injured in Nangarhar province had not changed.

In Kabul, health authorities said rescuers were racing to reach remote hamlets dotting an area with a long history of earthquakes and floods.

Comment: Update September 2

abc.net.au reports:
The worst earthquake to hit Afghanistan in years has killed more than 1,400 people, the Taliban says, with more than 3,000 others injured as different conditions hinder rescue efforts in remote areas.

Sunday's magnitude-6.0 quake has killed at least 1,411 people and injured another 3,124, with some 5,400 houses destroyed, Taliban administration spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said.

The Afghan Red Crescent Society, a humanitarian group working in the region, said many people are still trapped under the rubble.

The United Nations has warned the number killed is likely to rise and that the number of people impacted could reach the hundreds of thousands.

"We cannot afford to forget the people of Afghanistan who are facing multiple crises, multiple shocks, and the resilience of the communities has been saturated," Indrika Ratwatte, the UN's resident coordinator for Afghanistan, told a media briefing on Tuesday.

He urged the international community to step forward.
Update September 4

Al Jazeera reports:
Rescuers have recovered hundreds of bodies from mountainous areas of southeastern Afghanistan, which was hit by a major earthquake at the weekend, taking the death toll to more than 2,200, according to a Taliban government spokesperson.

Previous estimates said some 1,400 people were killed. Taliban spokesperson Hamdullah Fitrat said on Thursday that the updated death toll was 2,205.

Japan sees near-record number of 69 bear attacks in 5 months including 5 fatalities

mmmmm
Japan's Environment Ministry says 69 people were attacked by bears from April to August. Five of them died. The number of attacks is close to a record high marked in fiscal 2023, with three more deaths.

By prefecture, 13 people were attacked by bears in Nagano and Iwate in the period, eight in Akita and five in Fukushima and Niigata.

Two people were killed in Hokkaido, and one in each of Iwate, Akita and Nagano.

In fiscal 2023, 71 people suffered bear attacks in the five-month period from April to August, the highest number since record-keeping under the current method began in fiscal 2006. Two people were killed in the period.

There were 12,067 bear sighting reports across Japan through July this fiscal year, starting in April, excluding the Kyushu region and Okinawa and Hokkaido prefectures. That figure is up more than 40 percent from the 8,536 reports in the same period of fiscal 2023.

The ministry says if there is little food for bears such as acorns in mountains in and after autumn, more of the hungry bears may wander into urban areas. Officials are calling on people to avoid leaving food waste outside for too long.

A man in South Africa is speaking out about having to "fight to survive" after being attacked by two hyenas while staying at a nature reserve for a bachelor party.

On Saturday, Aug. 30, Nicolas Hohls, 27, who lives at Strydgewon Farm in Harburg, KwaZulu-Natal, arrived at Cape Vidal Nature Reserve in St. Lucia, South Africa — which he'd been visiting since he was 6 years old — just before noon with his dad, Colin, ready for the celebrations to begin.

Hohls and some friends had been fishing in the day and had some food and a few beers that evening before going to bed tired, after the week's work, at around 1 a.m. local time.

Approximately half an hour later, he said two hyenas attacked him after one entered his tent through a 6-inch gap that he'd left unzipped for ventilation.

One of the two animals ended up with part of Hohl's head inside its mouth, with its jaws clamped around his cheek and skull, while the other clamped onto his left ankle.
