Dramatic moment lightning hits tree and starts fire in Wisconsin

mmmmm
A bolt of lightning struck a tree on a property in north-central Wisconsin on Tuesday, September 9, sending bits of bark and other debris flying through the air and setting the tree on fire. Security camera footage captured by Mike Smith shows the dramatic scene on Smith's property in Tomahawk, Wisconsin, on Tuesday.

A loud explosion could be heard as the lightning hits the tree, causing tree bark and debris to scatter across the property. Smith said he was not on the property at the time and received a text from a neighbor saying his tree was on fire. Later footage shows Smith's neighbors using lake water to put out the fire at the base of the tree.

Smith said that the fire department extinguished the fire that was further up the tree. "We had a freak bolt of lightning destroy one of our pine trees," Smith wrote on Facebook. "Thanks to our great neighbors for putting out the fire and helping me with communication with emergency services. Sad for our tree..."

Heavy rains batter Italy, triggering floods, travel disruptions

MMMM
Heavy rainfall has swept across Italy in the past 24 hours, triggering floods, landslides and transport disruptions, with northern and central regions among the worst affected, reported Xinhua.

The severe weather followed a 24-hour nationwide warning issued by the Italian Civil Protection Department for thunderstorms, hail and strong winds. The agency also placed five regions under an orange alert, the second-highest level for hydrogeological risk. The alert covered parts of Lombardy, Friuli-Venezia Giulia and Tuscany, as well as the entire regions of Lazio and Umbria. Southern areas, including Palermo and Trapani in Sicily, faced lower risk levels but remained on alert for flooding and related hazards.

On Elba Island off the coast of Tuscany, a violent thunderstorm inundated the main town of Portoferraio on Tuesday, temporarily isolating around 200 residents, local authorities said. Although floodwaters began to recede late Wednesday, Mayor Tiziano Nocentini urged residents to stay indoors and warned of possible new storms overnight. He noted that it was the fourth extreme weather event to hit the island in less than six months.

Flash floods that struck two provinces in Indonesia this week have killed at least 19 people, according to disaster mitigation officials, with operations under way to search for the missing.

Torrential rains beginning on Monday caused flooding and landslides on the tourist island of Bali and in East Nusa Tenggara province.

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto ordered his aides to accelerate the handling of the aftermath of the deadly flooding, locate the missing and deliver basic needs to displaced residents, Antara state news agency reported on Thursday.

The National Disaster Mitigation Agency, BNPB, reported that 400 to 600 personnel from various institutions had been deployed to search for the missing and clear debris.

Rain caused rivers to burst their banks, tearing through nine cities and districts on Bali. Mud, rocks and trees tumbled onto mountainside hamlets and rising rivers submerged at least 120 neighbourhoods, resulting in a dozen landslides in several places, BNPB spokesperson Abdul Muhari said in a statement.
