Severe storms hit Wichita with baseball-sized hail Wednesday evening; NWS issued thunderstorm alerts for Wichita, Derby, and Haysville until 9 p.m. CDT.

Weather conditions in Wichita, Kansas, deteriorated significantly on Wednesday evening as multiple massive hailstorms moved through the area. The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm alert for Wichita, Derby, and Haysville until 9:00 p.m. CDT.

Videos of the scary storm over Wichita was shared by residents on social media. Baseball-sized hail was also reported in Kansas.

The NWS classified the storm in the severe category and said that it has a "long history of producing very large hail of golf ball to baseball size and 60mph winds at times from McPherson to west of Hesston." The storm was expected to arrive at the Valley Center in North Wichita around 7:30 p.m. The Wichita Metro area was placed under a warning by the NWS.

Several Wichita residents shared photos and videos of the hail falling near their residences amid the storms that passed over the city. Significant damage was reported to cars and properties across north Wichita. Here are some of the videos shared by Wichita residents:


Hail Reported Across Wichita

Hail ranged from 1.00″ to 3.00″, with the largest reported near Lost Springs, Marion County, and multiple 2.50″ - 2.75″ reports in Sedgwick and Harvey counties, including downtown Wichita. Numerous areas, including Halstead, Valley Center, and Park City, reported 1.75″ - 2.50″ hail, causing property damage.

Damaging winds accompanied the storms, with gusts up to 75 mph in Maize and Halstead, tearing off paneling and railroad crossing arms. Flooding was reported near Broadway in Park City.
