The number of wildfires in British Columbia continues to swell as thousands of lightning strikes hit the province due to persisting hot and dry weather.

The BC Wildfire Service says about 140 wildfires were burning across the province as of Sunday morning, a sharp rise from the 68 last Wednesday.

The wildfire service says more than 75 per cent of the active blazes were caused by lightning.

The service's latest situational report says nearly 4,400 lightning strikes were recorded across B.C. on Friday and Saturday, mostly in the Cariboo and Coastal regions.

The Cariboo Regional District has issued an evacuation order for more than 62 square kilometres of land near the Tsetzi Lake area due to an out-of-control wildfire.

Webcam captures waterspout near Galveston Island, Texas

mmmmm
A waterspout was spotted off the coast of Galveston Island on Saturday afternoon, close to the Seawall.

A webcam from the Saltwater Recon website captured the moment the waterspout appeared, near the beach at 45th Street just before 1 p.m. Saturday. Reports said that the waterspout moved on to the beach, blowing umbrellas and chairs around on the beach. No injuries were reported.

According to the National Weather Service, a waterspout is a tornado "that form over water, or move from land to water. They have the same characteristics as a land tornado." They form during severe thunderstorms and usually bring strong winds and lightning.

Most waterspouts dissipate rapidly when they make landfall, the NWS says. But if they do move inland, they become a tornado.

Folks across the eastern half of the U.S. have been wearing quarter zips, sweatshirts, and hoodies at night, with some even sparking up fireplaces and/or bonfires as the summer winds down, thanks to unseasonably cool air.

In some areas across the Lower 48 - mostly the eastern half - temperatures have been "record-breaking cold" and the coldest in a generation for some zip codes.

A number of areas in Metro Manila experienced flooding following heavy to intense rainfall on Saturday afternoon.

In Quezon City, footage from YouScooper Gelo Imperial showed floodwaters up to the roof of a vehicle along Mother Ignacia Avenue in Barangay South Triangle.

Floodwaters on Mother Ignacia Avenue rose to around average human height in less than an hour, Darlene Cay said in her report on "24 Oras Weekend."

Due to the strong current, a plastic barrier was taken away while a utility van, a pickup truck, and a street sign were submerged.

Several motorists and commuters were stranded due to the flood.

Man killed in attack by two American bully XL dogs inside his home in Rotterdam, Netherlands

PIT BULL ATTACK
A man died in Rotterdam after being mauled by two dogs inside his home, police said Sunday. Officers shot at one of the animals to reach the victim, but attempts to resuscitate him failed.

Both dogs, identified as American bully XLs, were later put down in the garden, according to police. The animals attacked the man when he tried to separate them during a fight, his daughter told AD.

"They were wild, fighting dogs he tried to pull apart," she said. The dogs were about nine months old. One belonged to the man himself, while the other was his granddaughter's, she added.

The daughter described her father as widely loved in his community. "He was a very kind father. A man who got along with everyone. When my mother passed away, the entire street looked after him. That says a lot about how cherished he was here."

The police said in a statement on X that they were unable to provide details beyond what was shared late Saturday night and do not expect to release additional information soon.

The American bully XL breed was placed on the Netherlands' official list of high-risk dogs in 2017. In recent years, the United Kingdom introduced strict rules for ownership and breeding of the dogs following several fatal biting incidents.

An enormous sinkhole in Norway engulfed a portion of motorway and railway tracks, killing one person, authorities said on Saturday.

The hole, spanning several dozen meters, affected both lanes of the E6 motorway and the tracks running alongside the road in the town of Levanger, some 500 kilometers north of Oslo, according to photos by Norwegian media.

A Danish worker who was onsite and went missing has been presumed dead, the police said in a statement.

The Norwegian public company responsible for managing the country's railway infrastructure was carrying out work to stabilize the soil along the railway track, the company told Norwegian broadcaster NRK.

The company stated it was too early to say whether the works could have triggered the sinkhole.

Beekeepers highlight record number of bee colony losses in Texas - 62% loss

mmmmm
Beekeepers report losses of over 60 percent of their colonies in Texas, devastating the population.

"Big difference for this year versus years past is, it's just so widespread. You know, I have always seen isolated events where one beekeeper may lose high colonies, but it just seems like more and more," Garett Slater, a honey bee specialist with Texas A&M AgriLife

"We lost 24 hives in a 10 day period," said Daniel Lennon, chief apiarist with Honey Badger Trading Co.

Garett Slater with Texas A&M AgriLife says that these numbers have steadily increased over the last 20 years, going from 40 to 50 percent, now up to 62 percent.

If the number of colonies that die continue to rise, Slater says the impact could be big.

'Amazing' scenes across Australia's alpine regions as winter's 'last hurrah' extends ski season after nearly a meter of late snowfall

Mount Hotham in Victoria has enjoyed nearly 80cms of fresh snow in recent days.
Spring might be just around the corner but you'd hardly know it looking out the window for millions of Australians this weekend. Keen skiers are thanking their lucky stars after blizzard conditions have dumped plenty of snow in the alpine regions in Australia's southeast in recent days - promising some enticing September skiing this year.

As a cold front moved through south-east Australia to end the week, nearly a metre of snow has landed for the resorts. And the intense and blustery conditions are set to ease as the weekend rolls on with one resort saying the "best day of the season" could be in store.

"Blizzard conditions will be generated by damaging wind gusts, combined with a very cold air mass that will cause snow levels to fall as low as 700 metres," the Bureau of Meteorology warned late on Friday.

"Gusty and snowy conditions are forecast to continue into Saturday morning, before gradually easing later in the day."

Explosive eruption at Santa Maria volcano, Guatemala

mmmmm
An explosive eruption occurred at Santa María volcano in Guatemala at approximately 06:40 UTC on August 29. According to the Washington VAAC, volcanic ash was observed at 4.2 km (14 000 feet) above sea level, about 500 m (1 640 feet) above the summit, at 12:30 UTC.

The eruption originated from the Santiaguito lava-dome complex, part of the Santa María volcanic system. This event follows weeks of elevated eruptive activity reported by the National Institute for Seismology, Volcanology, Meteorology, and Hydrology (INSIVUMEH).

During the week of August 12 - 19, high levels of activity were recorded at the Caliente dome, including lava extrusion, frequent explosions, and multiple pyroclastic flows.
