Spring might be just around the corner but you'd hardly know it looking out the window for millions of Australians this weekend. Keen skiers are thanking their lucky stars after blizzard conditions have dumped plenty of snow in the alpine regions in Australia's southeast in recent days - promising some enticing September skiing this year.

As a cold front moved through south-east Australia to end the week, nearly a metre of snow has landed for the resorts. And the intense and blustery conditions are set to ease as the weekend rolls on with one resort saying the "best day of the season" could be in store.

"Blizzard conditions will be generated by damaging wind gusts, combined with a very cold air mass that will cause snow levels to fall as low as 700 metres," the Bureau of Meteorology warned late on Friday.

"Gusty and snowy conditions are forecast to continue into Saturday morning, before gradually easing later in the day."

At Hotham Alpine Resort in Victoria, workers were shifting snow overnight as they celebrated the "snow storm of the season".

"It's been one of the biggest storms we've had over winter," Andrew Eckersley from Mount Hotham told Yahoo News on Saturday morning, saying the latest weather event will now take them "pretty deep into the season".

"It's been a pretty awesome last couple of days and the riding this weekend should be fantastic," he said, despite some strong winds today. "But looking at the forecast that should die off quite a bit tomorrow."

The mountain reported a total of 77 centimetres of fresh snow in the latest dumpings, with the base now sitting at about 165cm. "It's awesome to see the resorts in such good shape at this time of the season," Andrew said.

"How amazing is this!" one resident remarked as photos of the latest conditions were shared online.

September ski conditions set to be the best in years: 'Really exciting'

It's a similar story across the border in NSW's alpine region with more snow falling in Thredbo and Perisher overnight, taking the total this week to about 71cm.

"We've had pretty much 25 centimetres overnight for the last three nights," Thredbo's Marketing Director Richie Carroll told Yahoo this morning. "It's been snowing all the way down to the village.

"It's set up an incredible September and we should be skiing all the way through to the end of the season which is super exciting."
