It is a year since South African police shot dead 34 striking miners at the Marikana mine, shocking the nation and the world. The BBC's Pumza Fihlani looks at how the killing has changed the country.

It is a chilly winter's day and widows Nonkululeko Ngxande, 32 and Zameka Nungu, 40 have returned to the place where their husbands breathed their last and they are shocked by what they see.

The white wooden crosses that had been erected in memorial of the dead miners are now lying neglected in a pile at the bottom of the rocky hill - some have even broken.

"Our husbands were killed like dogs. We are widows today because of the police and yet no-one has been arrested for their deaths," says Ms Nungu, tears gushing down her face.

"No-one cares about the men who died here because they were nobodies," she continues, her eyes red from crying.

The widows believe the desecrated crosses are telling - a reflection of how little the deaths of their beloved husbands have meant to those blamed for them - mine owner Lonmin, the police and the government.

It has been a year since Ms Ngxande's husband died but the pain of losing him is still etched on her face. Her voice shakes when she speaks about him.

Warren Jeffs sends Arizona Attorney General Tom Horne 'revelations'

Warren Jeffs is a self-proclaimed "prophet of God," and he's now sharing his prophecies with one of Arizona's top leaders -- Attorney General Tom Horne.

From behind bars in Palestine, Texas, Jeffs telephones his followers who transcribe his words and often send copies of them to public officials.

The ABC15 Investigators have obtained copies of correspondence sent to Horne's office last month. The "revelations" are a mixture of orders, visions and demands.

See the revelations sent on July 5 , July 12 , and July 23.

Horne said he's concerned because the revelations show that Jeffs still has control over the FLDS community in Colorado City, Ariz.

"It's the worst injustice happening in Arizona right now," he said.

Jeffs is the leader of the polygamist FLDS church. But he's currently serving more than 100 years in prison for child molestation.

Former members of the FLDS community said that Jeffs writes the revelations on a regular basis to be studied and carried out by his followers.

"Warren is claiming that these are revelations from God through him to all leaders in the world," said Flora Jessop, who escaped from Colorado City and the FLDS church two decades ago. "It makes me angry a little bit that he is allowed to continue to spread this kind of crap."

A Bolivian man born in 1890 - and still going strong - has been revealed as the oldest living person ever recorded, it was reported today.

Carmelo Flores Laura turned 123 last month, according to Bolivia's civil registry.

Yet the herder, from the mountain village of Frasquicia, 50 miles outside the capital La Paz, is still healthy, walks without a stick and doesn't wear glasses, according to reports.

NAACP calls on Justice Dept., Secret Service to investigate rodeo clown flap

The Missouri chapter of the NAACP appealed for the U.S. Department of Justice and the Secret Service to launch an investigation and open a federal case against the rodeo clown who donned a mask of President Obama's face and mocked with the crowd: Do you want to see a bull run down Mr. Obama?

The NAACP says the clown was guilty of inciting violence against the president.

In a statement reported by Breitbart, the NAACP's state president, Mary Ratliff, wrote: "The activities at the Missouri State Fair targeting and inciting violence against our president are serious and warrant a full review by both the Secret Service and the Justice Department. Incidents involving individuals acting out with extreme violent behavior in movie theaters, schools, churches, political appearances, and outdoor events in general speaks volume to the irresponsible behavior of all the parties involved with the incendiary events at the Missouri State Fair."

Comment: Considering the fact that Obama is remotely murdering innocent men, women and children with Drones on a regular basis, it sure sounds like the wrong clown is getting the "sensitivity training" here.

An Indiana firefighter has filed a formal complaint about an Evansville Police Department officer who he claims stopped him while he was riding his bike, handcuffed him and threatened him with a Taser.

George Madison Jr., 38, says he was stopped by two officers after he waved at them.

"The officer jumped out and says, 'What are you doing throwing your hands up at us?'" Madison said. "He is talking to me as he is coming toward me. I tried to explain, but I couldn't get a word in edgewise."

Madison declined to identify the officers, but it has been reported that they are EPD officers Darin Clifton and Jason Clegg. He called Evansville Police Chief Bolin to tell him what had happened and then met with the department's internal affairs division.

"I remember looking down the barrel of a Taser, because [the officer] was gritting his teeth and saying, 'Don't make me pull this trigger,'" Madison said. "It was literally maybe inches from my face. I immediately threw my hands in the air. What he asked me to do I was more than willing to do. I said 'Please don't hurt me.' The next thing I know I'm laying down the ground and they cuffed me."

A German man who pretended to be heir to the Rockefeller oil fortune has been jailed for killing his California landlady's adult son in 1985.

Christian Gerhartsreiter, 52, was sentenced to 27 years to life in prison at a Los Angeles federal court.

He had been living in Los Angeles under a false name when he murdered John Sohus, 27. His bones were later dug up at the house.

Sohus' wife Linda, 29, also vanished. No trace of her has ever been found.

In April, a jury found Gerhartsreiter guilty of first-degree murder with malicious intent, and of using a blunt object as a deadly and dangerous weapon to kill.

Gerhartsreiter proclaimed his innocence as he was sentenced on Thursday, accusing Linda Sohus of the killing.

Dave Lee Travis, ex-Radio 1 DJ, faces indecent assault charges

Former BBC Radio 1 presenter Dave Lee Travis has been charged with 12 historical sexual offences, police say.

The 68-year-old faces 11 counts of indecent assault and one of sexual assault, and will appear before Westminster magistrates on 23 August.

Mr Travis, of Mentmore, Bucks, said he was "disappointed and surprised" to be charged and denied the allegations.

The allegations date from 1977 to 2007 and relate to nine female complainants aged between 15 and 29 at the time.

Mr Travis was questioned by police as part of Operation Yewtree, an investigation into historical claims linked to the entertainment industry.

The probe was launched in the wake of sexual offence allegations against ex-TV presenter and Radio 1 DJ Jimmy Savile.

The Oklahoman reported that seventy-eight children in custody of the Oklahoma Department of Human Services are missing. Thirty-eight of them have been missing for more than three months. Melissa Jones, a DHS program supervisor, insisted that "there is accountability, but keeping children from running away can be harder than it seems".

Kim Baker who formerly worked for the DHS in Oklahoma City commented "I worked for DHS child abuse center in OKC about 30 years ago and I saw corruption then. I had to quit. I went to a state attorney for help because I was 19 and didn't know where to turn to report the abuse and nothing was done. I had to quit and not be part of it."

Marc Faber, the author of "The Gloom, Boom & Doom Report," says investors need to brace for a drop of 20% or more by the time 2013 closes, predicting a market fallout similar to what was seen in 1987.
"In 1987, we had a very powerful rally, but also earnings were no longer rising substantially, and the market became very overbought," Faber said Thursday on CNBC. "The final rally into Aug. 25 occurred with a diminishing number of stocks hitting 52-week highs. In other words, the new-high list was contracting, and we have several breaks in different stocks."
October 1987 marks a period no investor could easily forget. The S&P 500 SPX -1.29% is up around 20% for 2013 so far. Faber compares that to 1987, when stocks rose more than 30% up to the same point. But it was in the latter half of 1987 that things fell apart. On "Black Monday," Oct. 19, 1987, the S&P 500 fell 20.4% in the biggest single-day loss for Wall Street in history. It marked the end of a five-year bull market, and stocks ended up just about where they'd started that phase.

He noted that during a two-day period this week, as the S&P 500 nears an all-time high of 1,709, there have been 170 new 52-week lows. That means just a relatively few companies are driving the market higher.
"The only way this market can go up is if the 10 or 50 stocks that are very strong continue to drive the market higher, with the majority of stocks having actually peaked out."
Of course, the 1987-crash theme is not a new one for Faber. He made similar predictions in May and February. So how many times is Faber going to cry wolf before we see this happen? Well, ZeroHedge says he may be on to something, if you look at a Hindenburg cluster that's been happening over the last four days. This indicator warns when more than 2.2% of traded issues are hitting new highs, while another 2.2% or more are making new lows. (Read more on the Hindenburg Omen.)
