Not all pedophiles should be jailed, "cannot cope" with the "huge" rise in reports - UK police chief

Pedophiles who view indecent images but do not molest children should not be jailed, a leading child protection police officer has said.

Chief Constable Simon Bailey of the National Police Chief's Council said police forces "cannot cope" with the "huge" rise in reports. He says an increase in reporting sexual abuse - including historical cases - has lead to the policing system reaching "saturation point."

Officers should focus on the most dangerous offenders who could directly offend against children, he says, while lower level offending should be dealt with through counselling and rehabilitation.

Due to stigma, it is difficult to know how many pedophiles there are in Britain. The National Crime Agency in 2015, however, estimated up to 750,000 men are interested in having sex with children. That implies that as many as one in every 35 adult males is on the pedophile spectrum.

A National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) study in late 2016 suggested the number of individuals looking at child porn could exceed half a million. Bailey told the BBC about 400 people were arrested by police every month for looking at indecent images.

Comment: The numbers are staggering and a definite sign of the times. Some RT readers expressed outrage and feared that it would normalize pedophilia and push towards a lack of punishment overall. If lawmakers were serious about tackling the problem maybe they could target the institutions they are surrounded by, and then the porn industry for committing the sexual abuse and providing material that can be exposed to adults and children of any age. From the website Your brain On Porn:
"Kinsey Institute researchers were among the first to report this phenomenon. In 2007, they noted that high exposure to pornography videos apparently resulted in lower sexual responsivity and an increased need for more extreme, specialized or "kinky" material to become aroused, but did not investigate further."

Minnesota cop pleads 'not guilty' over Facebook Live shooting death of Philando Castile

The police officer accused of fatally shooting Philando Castile has pleaded not guilty in a Minnesota court. Castile's death in July 2016 caused mass protests when the aftermath was streamed on Facebook Live by Castille's girlfriend.

Jeronimo Yanez (28), who is currently on leave from the St Anthony Police Department, is charged with manslaughter with a trial date set for May 30. His attorney told the court on Monday that he will request the trial be moved from St Paul, which is just a few miles from Falcon Heights where Castile (32) was shot, reported the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

Prosecutors claim Yanez acted unreasonably when he shot Castile seven times while sitting in the passenger seat of a car at a traffic stop. His girlfriend, Diamond Reynolds, began streaming the aftermath on Facebook Live, showing the bloodied Castile and his upset four-year-old daughter in the back seat.

The video quickly gained nationwide attention and received accusations of police brutality, sparking mass protests.

Royal Air Force women banned from wearing skirts on parade in bid to be more 'inclusive'

Female members of the Royal Air Force (RAF) have been banned from wearing skirts on parade in order to make the service more inclusive for transgender recruits. The shift in rules also follows complaints by women that the blue skirts worn in service working dress are uncomfortable.

An RAF source told the Sun that the change has been made to highlight the force as a "modern and inclusive employer."

"We have men who want to live as women, women who want to live as men and personnel who do not identify with any gender.

"The view was we need a uniform policy to cut through all of that and say there is one uniform for everyone and that's that," the source claimed.

An RAF spokesperson told the Sun that while "uniform regulations, including dress for formal parades, are regularly reviewed" there had been no formal decisions "to make any changes" so far.

Comment: While the ban on smut seeks to make a more respectful environment for women, doesn't the ban on women wearing skirts on parade go to the extreme of denying femininity altogether? In the fervor to be more inclusive, doesn't the ban exclude the many service members who are women?

See: Mummy, why is Daddy wearing a dress? Daddy, why does Mummy have a moustache?

Brooklyn rabbi charged with sexually assaulting students gets off with 60-days in jail; victims afraid to testify

A Brooklyn rabbi charged with sexually abusing four teenage boys in a hotel was sentenced to just 60 days in jail and six years of probation.

Yoel Malik, 33, a member of the Satmar Hasidic sect, was given the generous plea deal after the victims were extremely reluctant to testify publicly, according to a law enforcement source familiar with the case.

In 2013, Malik was charged with 28 criminal counts and shamelessly blamed his underage victims for trying to seduce him, police sources said.

The boys were all students at Ohr Hameir, a now-shuttered Satmar yeshiva in Borough Park. The alleged victims were between 13 and 16 when the incidents occurred.

Comment: It is despicable, but all too common that sexual predators are often given what amounts to a slap on the wrist - if they are even brought to justice. The vast majority of these crimes are covered-up; not surprising considering the evidence that perversion is disgustingly common among the powerful.

The following is from an interview transcript.

I think, if you want to get you message out today, you need to make videos. You need to make small films and put them on social media. That is the way to spread your word or your massage today. This is very important.

People do not have time to read anymore, because now so many things are going on online. There is so much information you need to relay in time. I think people actually don't want to watch videos longer than 2 or 3 minutes. So, they need to be very short if you want to get your message out.

Actually, there is big potential here. I mean, you can receive so many massages from people all around the world, from India, Africa, Brazil. I live in Scandinavia and this gives me a lot of possibilities to reach a lot of people with this new form of small videos and films. I think that this is a positive thing.

Hawaii politician and doctor proposes housing as treatment for homelessness

Homeless in Hawaii
© WBUR
Many people think of Hawaii as a tropical paradise where you can go during your vacation to escape your worries and truly enjoy life and everything the beautiful islands have to offer. However, much like the rest of the United States, it also struggles with homelessness.

Dr. Josh Green, a senator in the state legislature of Hawaii, has recently introduced a bill which seeks to classify the situation of being homeless as a medical condition. His inspiration for the bill comes from his experience as an emergency room doctor, where he saw how many homeless patients suffer from a variety of conditions like diabetes, different mental health disorders, and many other medical issues.

These types of medical conditions are incredibly hard to manage when the patients homeless or do not have any permanent housing conditions. Therefore, classifying homelessness as a medical condition would allow doctors to prescribe the cure for their situation, that is housing.

The new Hawaiian bill was introduced last week on the house floor, and if it passes, it would require insurance companies to cover the costs of housing homeless people. More specifically, Senator Green wants to redirect some of Hawaii's $2 billion Medicaid annual budget to pay for the housing of patients.

South Koreans have staged a protest against a land-swap deal which will see their country host the controversial US defense missile system THAAD. Some living near the host site have also filed a lawsuit against the Defense Ministry, according to attorneys.

Demonstrators holding signs and chanting slogans gathered in front of the Seoul headquarters of retail giant Lotte on Tuesday to protest its deal with the South Korean government.

The agreement, signed between the two sides on Tuesday, will see the company trade its golf course for military-owned land near the capital, with the golf course becoming the future home of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system.
