US Supreme Court declines appeal for suspect who 'confessed' to masterminding the bombing of USS Cole under torture

The US Supreme Court declined to hear an appeal by a man detained at Guantanamo Bay, who argued that the military court due to try him for the alleged masterminding of the 2000 bombing of the USS Cole in Yemen lacked jurisdiction.

The decision paves the way for the military war crime tribunal of Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri to proceed, just days after the detainee's entire civilian defense team resigned.

Pentagon-paid defense lawyers for Nashiri asked the Supreme Court (Nashiri v. Trump) to consider the case an exception to the law that generally required a conviction before civilian court review.

Film director 'punished' and sexually harassed me - singer Björk

Björk
Iceland-born singer and actress Björk speak out about her own experiences of harassment in the film industry, writing Sunday that she was inspired by the women who've accused Harvey Weinstein of sexual harassment or rape.

"I am inspired by the women everywhere who are speaking up online to tell about my experience with a danish director," the actress wrote in an extensive message on Facebook.

"It was extremely clear to me when i walked into the actresses profession that my humiliation and role as a lesser sexually harassed being was the norm and set in stone with the director and a staff of dozens who enabled it and encouraged it," she continued. "I became aware of that it is a universal thing that a director can touch and harass his actresses at will and the institution of film allows it."

Texas inmates donate close to $54,000 for Hurricane Harvey relief

When Hurricane Katrina slammed into the Gulf Coast 12 years ago, inmates in Texas prisons told their wardens that they wanted to help.

Specifically, they wanted to donate money to hurricane relief funds. So officials with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice developed a novel system: Inmates, they decided, could give away money saved in their commissary accounts; instead of spending their balances on snacks or sneakers, they would be allowed to give a few dollars to the American Red Cross.

Inmates ultimately cobbled together about $44,000 to help those affected by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. So when Hurricane Harvey spun into Texas in August, some longtime inmates who remembered the previous efforts insisted that officials restart the program.

This time, the fund-raising was even more successful.

Longstanding sexual abuse in Tinseltown

hollywood ca
It's been commonplace throughout tinseltown's history. The so-called casting couch has been around for the past century, producers and other industry executives demanding sexual favors for roles in films, aspiring actors and experienced ones pressured to submit.

The Harvey Weinstein scandal is no aberration. Countless other film executives act the same way, now and earlier throughout the industry's history, the tip of the iceberg alone reported.

Hollywood moguls want sexual abuse incidents suppressed. Amy Berg's 2014 documentary "An Open Secret" discussed film industry underage victims of sexual exploitation, minors especially vulnerable to predatory vultures, powerful men believing they can get away with anything and usually do.

Psycho mom accused of killing her babies by cooking them alive in oven

Lamora Williams children
An Atlanta mom is accused of killing her 1- and 2-year-old sons by cooking them alive in an oven - and then sending their father footage of the grisly aftermath.

Investigators say Lamora Williams crammed the boys - Ke'Younte Penn, 2, and Ja'Karter Williams,1 - in the oven some time between midnight Thursday and 11 p.m. Friday, the Atlanta Journal Constitution reported.

The official cause of death is pending an autopsy.

Williams called the boys' father, Jameel Penn, Friday night to show him live video of the crime scene - including the children lying burned on the floor - which prompted him to call 911.

Time for justice: First Nations go to court seeking increase of $4 treaty annuity payments that have remained stagnant since 1874

When the fur-trader-turned-politician William Benjamin Robinson pulled up to the shores of the river that links Lake Superior and Lake Huron in 1850, his mission was clear: he was to gain access to as much of the vast territory around him as possible.

Acting on behalf of Queen Victoria, Robinson soon launched into formal negotiations with the indigenous people who lived in what would later become north-eastern Ontario in Canada.

Robinson treated with nearly two dozen communities whose connection to the land stretched back millennia.

Few of them could read, write or speak English fluently, but the two sides eventually struck a deal: in exchange for access to more than 35,700 square miles of land, Robinson offered hunting and fishing rights - and an annual payment equivalent to C$2 (£1.20/$1.60) per person each year.

In 1874, the payment was increased to C$4 a year. Since then, it has remained stagnant.

Now, 167 years after the Robinson Huron Treaty was signed, the document - and its original intent - is at the heart of a landmark legal challenge playing out in Ontario.

Seven-year-old Molly Reid was left with sores, ruining the family holiday
A MUM has hit out at British Airways claiming she and her daughter, 7, were left bleeding after being ravaged by BED BUGS during a flight to London Heathrow.

Heather Szilagyi, 38, told how she saw the critters crawling out from behind her in-flight TV frames and food tray during the journey.

Although she discreetly flagged the issue to cabin crew, she said they were unable to re-seat her, her fiance Eric Neilson and her daughter Molly Reid, 7.

She told The Sun Online the experience has ruined their trip after they spent hours washing themselves, their clothes and tending to their sores.

Heather, from Vancouver, Canada, said: "It's been really frustrating, this has been horrible and its really ruined our trip."

The incident occurred while the trio were aboard a BA flight departing Vancouver on Monday night.

A platform exploded in Lake Pontchartrain on Sunday evening (Oct. 15) near St. Charles Parish and north Kenner, according to Kenner Police Department spokesman Sgt. Brian McGregor. Seven people were injured in the explosion, according to Kenner Deputy Chief Administrative Officer Kriss Fortunato, and authorities believe an eighth person is still missing.

Search and rescue operations were ongoing Sunday at about 10:15 p.m. Rescue boats are being sent from the Kenner Boat Launch at the end of Williams Boulevard, McGregor said, and authorities asked that residents avoid the area as much as possible.

Five of those injured were taken to the University Medical Center and two to East Jefferson General Hospital, according to Mike Guillot, director of East Jefferson Emergency Medical Services. The five who were brought to UMC "have blast type injuries and burns" and are in critical condition, he said, and the two at East Jefferson are stable.
